14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
As a son we can expect to be led by the Spirit. It didn’t say as many as are led by the flesh. led by outward circumstances. Led by feelings. Led by emotions. Led by reasoning. Or even led by prophets. (New Testament Prophets confirm what God already is speaking in your heart)
1) We don’t seek guidance through a prophet but that doesn’t mean God won’t speak through a prophet to give us guidance. In the old testament people sought guidance through a prophet because they didn’t have the spirit of God within them.
2) There are times we seek guidance by ways other than what God said. We sometimes judge how God is leading by what our physical senses are telling us. No were in the Bible does God say that He will guide us through our physical senses.
3) Many times we look at situations from a mental standpoint and endeavor to reason things out. However there isn’t scripture that points out that God will lead us through our mentality.
4) Proverbs 20:27
27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.
What that means is God will guide us through our spirit by the Holy Spirit.
a) Man is first of all spirit.
23 I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better.
24 But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.
Paul is going to live weather in the body or outside of the body with Christ.
c) 1 Thessalonians 5:23
23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
d) Hebrews 4:12
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
E) 1 Corinthians 14:14
14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.
Romans 8:16
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
The inward witness could be a check in your spirit warning you not to proceed.
Vs the velvety like feeling. The green light, the go ahead signal
I got that feeling when buying my house.
I also had that feeling in dating and marring my wife along with other things.
You could also call it the peace of God
I was reading a story of a guy who became a millionaire back in the early 20th century by following the inward witness.
He said everything he invested in made money
He said “I always do this. When someone comes along with an idea, wanting me to invest in something, my first reaction is mental. Now I know when Jesus said “when you pray, enter into your closet” I have a large closet that I would go pray about it. I wait long enough until I hear what my spirit says. Sometimes I wait 3 days. The majority of time I’m waiting until I know inside by an inward witness what I am to do.
There were times that his head would say one thing and his heart would say something else. In all those years he never lost a dime.
I get in that closet and wait sometimes all night. I’ll pray and read my Bible but most of the time just wait.
The inward witness is as powerful as an open vision but it’s not as spectacular.
28 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:
10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
God’s Spirit can lead our our steps beyond our own recognition.
1) God ordering our steps beyond our own recognition:
The story of trash cans and having the exact amount needed.
In terms of particulars, that depends somewhat on which biblical passage one is examining.
In Gal 5:18 its the Spirit leading into the fruit of the Spirit.
