Be Prayerful

Colossians 4:2–4 ESV
2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.
Introduction:
DT: As believers we must meet all facets of our life with prayer because prayer is essential in our relationship with God.
Devote Yourself to Prayer (v.2)
“2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.”
Paul encourages the Colossians to devote themselves to prayer. Paul is stressing the importance of prayer for them as believes. He says, “continue steadfastly”.
Paul further states that the Colossians be watchful, which means to be diligent and consistent. And do it giving thanks.
Application: Your prayer life cannot be irregular. You ought to make prayer a major part of your life. Our prayers cannot be SOS prayers each time we pray. We must enter into prayer grateful and satisfied with what God is doing in our lives.
Transition: Here is the next summons from the text.
Be A Prayer Intercessor (v.3-4)
“3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.”
Paul challenges the Colossians to pray outward and for others. This is what we call intercessory prayer. Paul encourages them to pray in a few areas.
Pray for the ministers - Paul desired the Colossians to recognize that their prayers were a part of the success of those who serve.
Pray for the Mission - Notice that Paul is placing the purpose of their prayers upon the work of the disciples. He is not asking for any special prayer to get out of jail. Paul is asking for the prayers of the saints for the ministry.
Pray for the Mission- Paul says ultimately what is important is that Christ be known.
Application: How do you pray? Better yet, what do you pray for?
