Introduction
The Birth of a child is one of the most spectacular events we experience. I know I say that as a man, and I don't fully understand the struggle, and hardship in the birthing process after the curse. But, as a husband and Father, who has experienced this event multiple times, I can say that is it truly spectacular.
It is such a flurry of emotions.
First there is joy, when the couple find out that they are expecting. Now, maybe thats not the first emotion, but for most people, the joy of being a parent comes almost natural.
Then there is the excited anticipation and the process of waiting and preparing for the new arrival. There is so much to get ready for new arrival.
Then there is the discomfort and struggle of the birthing process.
Followed by the joy of embracing the new born child.
And you know the rest, sleeplesss night, terrible two's, potty training, Fist day of school, Elementary, teenagers, college expenses, and the list could go on and on.
But that beginning is spectacular. It is wonderful!
As I think about the Advent season, there is a likeness to this process. We lit the first candle for advent today and it marks the beginning of the Advent Season. Can you feel the excitement? Have you started the preparations?
December 1, we will start the official countdown.
Not only is it the hap-happiest time of the year, but it is a wonderful time of year. Especially since we are past black Friday Shopping.
Each Week, during this Advent season, our goal is to prepare our selves and our families for the arrival of Christmas. Not just the opening of gifts, or the family meal, but a yearly reminder of the greatest gift ever given. The Giving of Jesus to this world. It's the reason we celebrate!
I want to remind you of a special verse from the prophets that foretold of this special event some 500 years before it actually happened.
Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Of course from a few chapters earlier we learn that this Child would be born of a virgin and a few chapter later we are told he would be from the line of David, well, Jesse specifically. We know this to be one of the many prophecies concerning the Christ Child.
And today, we are preparing to celebrate Christmas because he was born.
But for the next few weeks, I want us to focus on what Isaiah calls this Promise Child.
Wonderful
Counselor
Mighty God
Everlasting Father
Prince of Peace
Let's start with Wonderful. Jesus is Wonderful. Not only is Jesus Birth wonderful, but what His birth means to the world is wonderful.
What is so wonderful about this promised Child.
Jesus is wonderful; He hasn't forgotten
Jesus is wonderful; He hasn't forgotten
He is the fulfillment of a promise.
Jesus is the fulfillment of the promise made through the Story of the Old Testament.
Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Genesis 12:3 - And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
Isaiah 1-2 - Isaiah reminds Israel that there is a new Jerusalem. That Old Jerusalem will fall, but take hope, God will create a new Jerusalem.
His Life is a reminder that God does no forget his promised.
Not only is Jesus Birth wonderful, but what His birth means to the world is wonderful.
Jesus is wonderful, He hasn't forgotten us
I forget! We forget! But Jesus never forgets!
The Promised he has made to you through his word are true. And You may not see them fulfilled yet, but God has not forgotten them!
Jesus is wonderful, He hasn't forgotten us
Jesus is wonderful; He gives life
Jesus is wonderful; He gives life
When Mary found out that she was pregnant, she was filled with fear. But that fear was soon replaced by Joy
When Joseph found out, he must have been confused, but instead of public disgrace, he obeyed and honor God by honoring Mary
You may think this Story if Jesus Virgin Birth strange. And Many people down the ages have tried to discredit this account.
But to me, this birth highlights the fact that all life come from God.
Whether it is given by special creative work of the Holy Spirit, as in the life given to Adam, Eve and Jesus.
Or the natural design of God's creation through conception
It is all from Him.
Life is a gift from God
Jesus is wonderful; He gives life
And the sooner we come to this believe this truth the sooner we start valuing life instead of discarding it.
Not only is our physical life wonderful, but Jesus also gives new life.
Christmas celebrates the beginning of Jesus' life
But Scripture tells us that he came so that he could die for all mankind.
1 Peter 2:21-25 - For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
Peter says
Jesus did not know sin, yet we was hung on a cross.
We who are sinners can find forgiveness in the sacrifice of Jesus
We can find life through the life and death of Jesus
Jesus is wonderful; He gives life
Jesus is wonderful; He is with us
Jesus is wonderful; He is with us
The Birth of Jesus is something so unique. So wonderful.
It is wonderful in that it happened by a special work of creation inside Mary by the Holy Spirit
But it is also wonderful because it Jesus is not just man. Jesus is also God.
Isaiah 7:14 - Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, And shall call his name Immanuel.
Just as God did not leave his people in the epic journey Before Christ, He will never leave us.
The Birth of Jesus is a fleshly reminder of the length God will go to bring us back to him.
CONCLUSION:
This Week of Advent, I want you to know that Jesus is wonderful. Not only is Jesus Birth wonderful, but what His birth means to the world is wonderful.
His Birth means you can have new life.
Have you called out to him and received his forgiveness and life?
Why not today?
Is it the best gift God would like you to have!
