Romans 5:1-11
In the first four chapters of Romans we have the first major section of the book - we could call it “The Gospel Explained.”
Last week we started the look at the second section of this book chapters 5-8, we could title this section “The Gospel Experienced”
Verse number one of chapter five starts with “Therefore being justified by faith.”
He has spent the last chapter showing five illustrations or arguments of how Abraham, and we, are justified by faith and not the Law.
Therefore being justified by faith...
now Paul moves in to answer the question of what are the blessings of being justified by faith?
In chapter five we see the blessings of our justification in verses 1-11, and the basis of our justification in verses 12-21.
Last Week we looked at the first five verses, today I want to look at 5-11.
As we saw last week, Paul is making a series of assertions to let us know all the blessings we have in Christ.
Last week we saw the blessings of Justification from verses 1-5
Because we are justified by Faith, we have
Peace with God
Access to God
Hope of Heaven
Rejoicing in Tribulation
Now in verses 5-11 we see the last two blessings of Justification.
I.
The Love of God
5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
We saw last week that God gives us this Hope even in the midst of our trials, we have hope.
But why do we have this hope.
This verse continues…because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
This is the first mention of the love of God as well as the Spirit of God in the book of Romans.
What does the Holy Spirit do?
He regenerates us
He indwells us
He seals us
He baptizes us
He teaches us
He fills us
and now we see that He pours God’s love on us.
These verses tell us something about this Love of God.
First of all the Love of God...
A. Sheds
“because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”
This word that is translated “is shed abroad” is from the word ekcheo (Ek-Ke-Ho).
This word means to pour out, shed abroad, give generously.
Have you ever experienced that moment when flood of love spreads over your body.
Researches from around the world mapped where the body feels emotions.
Depression
Sadness
Fear
Pride
Love
Now I’m not arguing the accuracy of these images, but I do think it interesting the visual illustration of how love is poured out.
I love this imagery of abundance of love being poured out by the Holy Ghost.
This is not a one time thing, but rather the Holy Spirit actively.
This word is Present Perfect Indicative.
Let’s look at that:
Present - unlike English which means something happening right at this moment, Greek present tense speaks of a continued, or repeated action
Perfect Tense tells us it is a completed action that produces results that are in effect all the way to the present.
Indicative - presents the action as something real or certain, or objective fact.
In other words this one word tell us that this is a certain fact!
the love of God is being shed abroad in our hearts.
I wasn’t loved by God just when He sent Jesus to earth.
I wasn’t just loved by God when Jesus died on the Cross.
I wasn’t just loved by God when I accepted Jesus as my Saviour.
I am loved by God abundantly NOW - and so are you!
So the Love of God is Shed in our hearts, but it has a purpose, secondly we see the love of God ...
B. Strengthens
6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
Before God justified us, we were without strength.
this word means we were powerless, without strength.
What were we powerless to do?
Exactly what Paul spent the first four chapters describing.
We are powerless to save, to justify ourselves!
But the Love of God strengthens us…not to save ourselves, but to be saved.
God loved us so much that He sent Jesus, and “…in due time Christ died for the ungodly.”
so because of His death, burial and resurrection we have the enablement to be saved.
In verse seven he gives us a truth that we do not want to miss!
Romans 5:7 (KJV)
7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
scarcely = the word is used to describe the difficulty of labor pains - With difficulty, hardly, scarcely
He is saying hardly would he do this.
If you had a righteous man that was about to die, a man would hardly ,or with difficulty die for him.
He says, in truth for a good man some would die for him.
But what were we…we were without strength!
But these verses tell us even more about our state!
Not only were we weak in verse 6, but we were Ungodly
6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
We were Wicked!
This is not the good man that some would be willing to die for!
We were weak, we were wicked, we were Sinners,
verse 8 tells us this...
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
This word means to miss the mark.
It pictures the man who tries and
So we were weak, we were wicked, we were Sinners, and fourthly - what kind of man were we?
We were God’s enemies!
10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
We were the enemies of God!
Sure if there was a righteous man, for a good man, some might die, but scarcely!
But we were not righteous!
We were Weak
We were Wicked
We were sinners
WE were God’s Enemies!
And Yet we see that the Love of God that is Shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, doesn’t just strengthen us to become His.
