Review & Overview

1. Previous Study’s Review

Back in Chp.7:1: Paul said, now concerning the things of which you wrote to me…    so the church had several questions for Paul…
Now in chp.12, 13 & 14 Paul deals with the 5th question from the Corinthians regarding the Spiritual Realm & The Manifestations of the Holy Spirit…
We looked at the fact that Paul does not want us to be ignorant regarding the spiritual realm.
Involves Not Being Ignorant Vs. 1-3
Concerning The Spiritual Vs. 1
Concerning The Evil in the Spiritual Vs. 2
Concerning The Testing in the Spiritual Vs. 3

2. Current Study’s Overview

There are good scholars with different views as it pertains to the topic of Spiritual Gifts… Look at Vs. 4 Read...
As you can see in our quick reading of today’s scripture we are...
If you’re taking notes we want to look at 2 things regarding The Manifestations of the Holy Spirit…
Involves Knowing The Source Vs. 4-6
Involves the List of the Manifestations of the Holy Spirit Vs. 7-11

1. The Manifestations of the Holy Spirit Involves Knowing the Source Vs. 4-6

1.1 The Source for the Gifts Vs. 4

Now drop down to Vs. 11
So the Gifts come from the Spirit…     They are distributed by the Will of the Spirit…    not ours…
The H.S. will give us the gifts He wants us to have…  it might not be the one we want but He knows best.
Drop down to vs.29-30, read.   so we all don’t have the same gifts or necessarily all the gifts…
but  that does not mean we are used any less by God…     or         that we are any less a Christian….
In fact starting in vs.12 Paul makes it very clear that we are all very important regardless of our gifts…
Gifts:   charisma…  17 times…
There are 4 different Gk words for our one word Gift:

1. Dorea: the H.S. Himself being the gift…

2. Doma: office or person using the gift…

3. Merismos: gifts to confirm the Word.

4. Charisma: free gift or charismatic gifts…

There are a few question we want to look at regarding these Gifts: 6…

1. What Are The Gifts?: turn Rom.12:6-8… because charismatic gifts are Supernatural…   not   Natural…

A lot of people are naturally gifted,  in the arts…   sports…  intellect…
but  Paul lists 7 main or motivational gifts that are supernatural…   not   natural… these are the charismatic gifts…
Romans 12:6–8 NKJV
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

2. Why Do We Need The Gifts?: Look at Vs.7 it’s for the profit of all…   to build up others…     to edify others…

1 Peter 4:10 NKJV
10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
1 Corinthians 14:12 NKJV
12 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.
It’s also for us… to build us up… to edify ourselves…
1 Corinthians 14:4 NKJV
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
1 Corinthians 14:26 NKJV
26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

3. Does Everyone Have A Gift?: According to Vs. 7 each one has a gift...

1 Peter 4:10 NKJV
10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
Ephesians 1:3 NKJV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
2 Peter 1:3 NKJV
3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,

4. Are The Gifts For Today?:  The answer is yes, turn 1 Cor.14:5, 39-40…

1 Corinthians 14:5 NKJV
5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.
1 Corinthians 14:39–40 NKJV
39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
Acts 2:38–39 NKJV
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
Speaking of those who will get saved.

5. What Is My Gift?:   how do I know what my gift is? I like what Pastor Clark says, you’ll know & so will everyone else…

Your gift will simply & naturally flow from you… it won’t be work, effort, sweat…
it will be something you want to do & there will be fruit…    &   others will recognize that it’s your gift…
And they will recognize when it’s not your gift… they’ll say bro please stop, try something else you’re making it hard for yourself & you’re making it hard for the rest of us…

6. How Many Gifts Are There?: There are 2 views as it pertains to the Number of Gifts…

9 here in 1 Cor.12:8-10…
7 in Rom.12:4-8… 1. Prophesy. 2. Ministry. 3. Teaching. 4. Exhortation. 5. Giving. 6. Leading. 7. Mercy.
3 in 1 Cor.12:28…   8 total but 5 are repeated…   1. Apostles,    2. Helps,    3. Administrations…
2 in 1 Cor.7:7…    1. Celibacy…    2. Marriage…
2 in Eph.4:11…    5 total but 3 are repeated…    1. Evangelist…    2. Pastors…
1 in 1 Peter 4:9-10…  1 Hospitality…
So 24 Gifts Total
View #2:  there are 7 Main or Motivational or Charismatic gifts found Rom.12:6-8…
in 1 Cor.12, 13, 14: the rest of the gifts are an extension or a manifestation of those 7 main gifts…
And in Eph.4:11: the gifts of the offices in which the gifts are used are different than as well…
I like view #2 the best because the grammar…      but      view #1 is ok too…
But in all of this we should remember 2 things:
We need to make sure we use the gifts as outlined in Scripture…
We need to make sure not to put God in a box in thinking He can only work this way or that way…

1.2 The Source for the Ministries Vs. 5

Ministries:   diakonia,     administrations,    office…
turn Eph.4:7-12. there are differences of ministries… seems there are 5 different ministries or offices…  Read...
Ephesians 4:7–12 NKJV
7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.” 9 (Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
Vs.8 Gifts,   doma,   5 offices and these offices are found in Vs. 11...
Apostles:  apostolos,  one who is sent out, messenger…   we’re all sent out ones…
Prophets:  prophetes,   not fore-telling…  but   forth-telling the existing Word of God…
Evangelists: preacher or proclaimer of the Gospel…    we’re all called to do this…
Pastors: poimen,  Shepherd,   one who has a heart for others…   mom’s, dad’s this is us…
Teacher:  instructor, teacher,   one who imparts truth to others…
And the idea is that we all have at least one of these offices and we will be using one or more of the 7 gifts from Rom.12:6-8 in these offices or ministries…
Let’s go back to 1 Corinthians 12

1.3 The Source for the Activities Vs. 6

There Are Diversities of Activities Vs. 6a - energema, 2,    energy…       power…    effectiveness…
The Power or Effectiveness of our ministries & the exercising of our gifts comes by & from God…
It’s not based on our abilities or our power or strength…   it’s a work of the Spirit not the Flesh…
Zechariah 4:6 NKJV
6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.
And the ministry we’re involved in is not better or more important then another…
and notice...
The Same God Who Works In All Vs.6b - What ever gift we have…   whatever office we hold…   is equally important as the rest…
Lord willing in next week we’ll talk about that in vs.12-31…
Whatever gift we have…  &  whatever office we hold…   we need to step out in faith & use it…
1 Peter 4:10 NKJV
10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
2 Timothy 1:6 NKJV
6 Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

2. The List of the Manifestations of the Holy Spirit Vs. 8-10

2.1 The Manifestation of Wisdom Vs. 8a

sophia from sophos:      skilled,      expert,      wise…
turn James 3:13-17  the Bible talks about 2 sources of Wisdom…     &    2 types of Wisdom…
Heavenly Wisdom that brings Peace…    &    Earthly Wisdom that brings Confusion…   read.
James 3:13–17 NKJV
13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.
how do I get this type of wisdom? turn James 1:5-6.
James 1:5–6 NKJV
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
In 1 Kings 3: King Solomon goes to Gibeon to sacrifice…  &  the Lord appeared to him and said:     “ask! What shall I give you”…     wow can you imagine…      Solomon asked for wisdom…

2.2 The Manifestation of Knowledge Vs. 8b

Knowledge: gnosis,    to know,     to understand,     to comprehend something supernaturally…
In Acts 27: after Paul stood before Festus & King Agrippa sailing to Rome he stopping in Fair Heavens & he perceived the voyage would end in disaster & in the storm he told them not to abandon ship but they didn’t listen
Now there is a danger in only having knowledge
1 Corinthians 8:1 NKJV
1 Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.
Knowledge & Wisdom work together.
Knowledge is seeing a skunk & knowing it’s a skunk…     Wisdom is seeing a skunk & running…  so                      knowledge is the application of wisdom.

2.3 The Manifestation of Faith Vs. 9a

Faith:  pistis:      belief,     conviction,     not speaking of saving faith…
In Acts 14: After going thru Iconium, Paul came to Lystra and saw a man who was crippled from birth, and saw he had faith to be healed so Paul said:        Stand up straight on your feet…
Paul had faith to say, Stand up…       Paul put his faith into action, verbally…
ILLUSTRATION: About Josh’s mom

2.4 The Manifestation of Healings Vs. 9b

Healings:  iama, to cure,  to make whole,   remedy,    notice both gifts & healings are plural… vs.28,   vs.30.
I do not believe that any one person has the gifts of healings… though God does use people to heal others, but it seems that if you get healed…           you have received the gifts of healings…
so Can God heal: YES.    I’ve felt the power of God healing others & myself…
Does God always heal:  NO. 2 Cor.12:8 Paul prayed 3 times to be healed…  God’s answer was NO…

2.5 The Manifestation of Miracles Vs. 10a

Miracles:   dunamis      power,     might…
When something happens and it can not be explained naturally or logically…    it’s a miracle…
In Mark 4: Jesus and the disciples were in a boat and a great tempest arose, Jesus was sleeping in the stern…      Peace be Still…      that is a miracle…
In Acts 28: Paul was on the Island of Malta and got bit by a snake, nothing happened…   miracle…

2.6 The Manifestation of Prophecy Vs. 10b

Prophecy:  propheteia,      to speak forth…
Not Fore-telling the Word of God,   but  Forth-telling the Word of God. Speaking forth the existing Word of God.          it can also include predicting a future event…   Acts 21: Agabus
1 Cor.14:3 prophecy is for edification,     exhortation,    &   consolation…

2.7 The Manifestation of Discerning of Spirits Vs. 10c

Discerning of Spirits:  pneuma,    wind,     breath,     spirit…
This gift is so important in today’s day in age…   so many false prophets & false teachers fleecing the flock…
1 John 4:1 NKJV
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 NKJV
21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.
test…    why…
2 Corinthians 11:14 NKJV
14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
Satan and his demons can transform themselves into angels of light… so even if people say the right thing be careful…
we need to be like the Bereans in Acts 17:11 search the scriptures daily…

2.8 The Manifestation of Different Kinds of Tongues Vs. 10d

Different Kinds of Tongues:   glossa,   unknown language …  7 things to note about this gift…

1.  This is A gift of the Holy Spirit -       not       Thee gift of the Holy Spirit…

Some say if you don’t speak in tongues your not filled…     Gk: Bananas.   look at vs.29-30.

2.  Purpose of Tongues:  to build us up -

1 Corinthians 14:4 NKJV
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
Jude 1:20 it is a prayer language to build us up.
Jude 20 NKJV
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

3.  Who are we Talking To:  God…

1 Cor.14:2.   all prayer is toward God…
1 Corinthians 14:2 NKJV
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

4.  What are we Saying:

1 Cor.14:16 it’s Blessing & Thanking the Lord…
1 Corinthians 14:16 NKJV
16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say?
Acts 2:11 Praising the Lord…
Acts 2:11 NKJV
11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”

5.  How Many Tongues are There:   2,    look at...

1 Corinthians 13:1 NKJV
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

 6.  Are They for Today:   yes,  1 Cor.14:39-40…  Acts 2:39…   No doubt about they are for today…

 7.  Proper Use: 1 Cor.14:27-33, God is not the author of confusion… & the H.S. will not interrupt Himself.

1 Corinthians 14:27–33 NKJV
27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. 30 But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

2.9 The Manifestation of Interpretation Vs. 10e

look at 1 Cor.14:27-28 there must always be an interpretation of tongues in a public setting…
1 Corinthians 14:27-28
You can interpret your own tongue or someone else can…
