1 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.
2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.
7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”
9 Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
Introduction
Introduction
Jesus had just finished speaking in the temple.
Jesus had just finished speaking in the temple.
He was questioned about who He was
He was questioned about who He was
Some thought He was
++A Good Man (John 7:12)
++A Deceiver (John 7:12)
++A Prophet (John 7:40)
++The Christ (John 7:41)
He revealed the truth of who they were
He revealed the truth of who they were
They saw themselves as righteous
++But not without sin (John 8:9)
++Judged according to flesh (John 8:15)
++They could not hear God (John 8:47)
59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
59 Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
They took up stones against Jesus
They took up stones against Jesus
They did not approve
++Jesus understood the truth
++Jesus represented the truth
++Jesus spoke the truth
We live in a world resistant to God
++His Presence
++His Provision
++His Power
Jesus does not stay where He is not wanted
Jesus does not stay where He is not wanted
Jesus Leaves the Temple
++He is hiding himself
++He is moving through the crown
He passed by
He passed by
What happens when you are in a hurry?
++We see where were are going
++We are just trying to get away
1 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.
2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
The Situation
The Situation
This encounter was an interruption.
This encounter was an interruption.
Jesus saw the man.
Jesus saw the man.
He saw the man
++The man had a condition
A condition
is the state of something with regard to its appearance, quality, or working order
He saw a man
The man had a condition
++The man was blind
Blindness:
There is no ability to see. The eye cannot detect light and providers describe it as having no light perception.
Blindness is
++The inability to perceive light
++To live life in darkness
He saw a man
The man had a condition
++The man was blind
++He was born that way
The man had no reason to believe that he would ever be free of this condition
There are two extremes concerning disabilities
++We can ignore them
++We can be a constant reminder of them
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.
5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
Don’t be afraid to asks
Don’t be afraid to asks
2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
God uses our questions
++To bring clarity
++To speak into our life
++To help us see what he is doing
It was a question that brought the focus on the man.
Who's fault is it?
Who's fault is it?
He didn't ask why the man was born blind but his question is about whose fault it was. The goal seemed to be to find out who is to blame. There seem to be a general understanding that the man’s condition was a result of sin.
Would knowing who's at fault change or fix the issue?
Would knowing who's at fault change or fix the issue?
Would a better question be "What can be done to relieve this suffering?"
Human beings generally seek for answers or a rationale that can help them deal with the hard questions of pain, suffering, and evil.
When we see someone broken how do we respond?
When we see someone broken how do we respond?
We asks God
++Why did this happen?
++What is the reason for this evil?
++Is this your judgement?
We somehow feel that the why will give us a reason to help them or an excuse not to. When we have the why it makes us feel better in our response.
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
The inside job
The inside job
The understanding of God’s work
The understanding of God’s work
The disciples saw a people problem
++The Sin of the parents
++The Sin of the man
++The Sin of someone
Jesus revealed a more deeper issue
++It was not a people problem
++It was a personal problem
The revelation of God’s work
The revelation of God’s work
It is personal
++He cannot work through you
++He cannot work for you
++Until He works in you
The reality of God’s work
The reality of God’s work
6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.
Jesus reveals Gods work
++Putting his hands in the dirt
++Touching the man’s condition
++Gave instructions
7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
The man responded in obedience
The man responded in obedience
The blind man
++Went
++Washed
++Came back seeing
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”
9 Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him.” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
When I heard the reading of this passage, the statement "I am the Man" resonated within me.
In the midst of a miracle
In the midst of a miracle
The atmosphere was
++Not delight
++Not awe
++One of hostility and anger
++Intimidation
Yet he declared “I am The Man"
Only you can adequately tell your story.
Only you can adequately tell your story.
Some may deny it
Some may not believe it
Someone must still declare it
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
The works of God are revealed in my
I am a new Creation
