John 18:1–27 (NASB95)
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden, in which He entered with His disciples.
2 Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often met there with His disciples.
3 Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, *came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4 So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and *said to them, “Whom do you seek?”
5 They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He *said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.
6 So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Therefore He again asked them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.”
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,”
9 to fulfill the word which He spoke, “Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.”
10 Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus (Mal-cus)
11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”
12 So the Roman cohort and the commander and the bofficers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him,
13 and led Him to Annas (ann-as) first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people.
15 Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest,
16 but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.
17 Then the slave-girl who kept the door *said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He *said, “I am not.”
18 Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching.
20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret.
21“Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; they know what I said.”
22 When He had said this, one of the officers standing nearby struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?”
23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?”
24 So Annas (Ann-as) sent Him bound to aCaiaphas the high priest.
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.”
26 One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, *said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?”
27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.

After Jesus prayed. We see that He and His disciples to a garden
John does into say the name of this garden, but we know that it is Gethsemane (Mark 14:32).
This was a place that they all knew.
Judas knew that Jesus was at this location.
In other text, we know that Jesus was on the Mount of Olivers every night during passion week. (Luke 21:37)
so this was a common place, and Judas knowing this, knowing that Jesus would be there at night, when there is not a lot of people around because its still dark.

Judas not only had the Jewish officers come, but also he had a detachment of soldiers.
normally a Roman cohort is about 600 men,
but in John’s usage of the Greek noun, it is calculated that the number was about 200 men,
but it is not 100% sure that there were that many. but we know that there were Roman soldiers
Judas was given the authority over these soldiers

John here states a fact.
That Jesus knew all that was happening,
These men are coming at Him led by His friend.
John writes that Jesus knew all things.
instead of mentioning that Jesus was kissed by Judas with His betrayal,
John that emphasizes that Jesus is all knowing.
Jesus asks this question, not that He does not know the answer
Jesus is showing that it is clear who they are looking for.

Jesus identifies Himself.
not just as Jesus the Nazarene, but also Jesus as God, Messiah, as our Lord. (emmi)
6 So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Therefore He again asked them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.”
When Jesus identified who He is, the power in that led to these men to fall to the ground - in fact drew back and fell to the ground,
Judas was with them, We can say that Judas has already kissed him
Jesus is in control, He faced these men, He didn’t run, be approached them.
8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,”
9 to fulfill the word which He spoke, “Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.”
Jesus again, id’s Himself again.
But Jesus tells demands something of them.
8 Jesus answered, I told you that I am He. So, if you want Me [if it is only I for Whom you are looking], let these men go their way.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd , protecting His own as the masses comes for Him.
These men had to have been intimidating - look at the number, how they looked.
they may have been with the mindset that they were going to take all of them.
But Jesus again shows His authority. they are permitting to take Him but but them.
12 “While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

10 Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus (mal -cus).
11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the (she-th); the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”
Peter again, with his passion and heart, got in the way
Jesus stops him and reminds him that He will and must take this cup.
12 So the Roman cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him,
13 and led Him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was expedient for one man to die on behalf of the people.
Jesus was taken as a common prisoner. (He was not)
Jesus is taken in the middle of the night
he was taken to ANNAS
Annas was Pilate’s predecessor
- so although he was no longer in office, he was still respected as one in office.
- he was also the father in law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest.
This is the same person that spoke about Jesus having to die for the people in John 11:50
50 nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”
15 Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest,
16 but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.
Peter followed Jesus, also John. He identifies himself as the disciple that Jesus loves
So John and Peter both went to where Jesus was going on trial.
But John knew the high priest. and was able to get in, while Peter waited outside the courtyard at the gate
John talked to the authorities an dPeter was let in.
17 Then the slave-girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”
18 Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.
Once Peter got in, a slave-girl started asking questions. Are you a disciples of Jesus?
Peter denied.
It was a cold night. Jesus was on trail as a criminal. and It was cold.
19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching.
Jesus is on trial. He is being questioned about what He is teaching and His disciples.
20 Jesus answered him, “I have spoken openly to the world; I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and I spoke nothing in secret.
21 “Why do you question Me? Question those who have heard what I spoke to them; they know what I said.”
during this interrogation, Jesus answered.
Jesus preaches all throughout His ministry, Jesus was clear, and did not speak another plan in secret. He was clear
Jesus addresses the people that have heard Him speak. They knew what He spoke.
22 When He had said this, one of the officers standing nearby struck Jesus, saying, “Is that the way You answer the high priest?”
23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?”
religious pride
We see the pride of the religious folk.
the line between respect and reverence
the religious folk could not prove Jesus wrong, they had nothing that he said that was wrong.
the result was to hit Jesus.
24 So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Annas didn’t have a case against Jesus, so He sends Him to His son-in-law
25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.”
26 One of the slaves of the high priest, being a relative of the one whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?”
27 Peter then denied it again, and immediately a rooster crowed.
We return but to were Peter is warning himself near the fire.
even the relative of Malchus recognized (Mal- cus) Peter.
For the third time Peter denied knowing Jesus, then the rooster crowed. John 13:38
38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
What do we do under pressure?
Jesus is the good Shepherd, still protecting His own.
