John 6:1 NASB95
1 After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias).
Jesus doing many miracles
Jesus being persecuted by religious leaders
Jesus defending himself, though doing nothing but good
Death of John the Baptist (other gospels)
he went away to rest, recover, recuperate
John 6:2 NASB95
2 A large crowd followed Him, because they saw the signs which He was performing on those who were sick.
but crowds would not let him be because of the miracles
people want to be healed
people are curious
John 6:3 NASB95
3 Then Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples.
so he stopped running from them, had compassion on them (other gospels)
John 6:4–5 NASB95
4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near. 5 Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?”
So you have people traveling to Jerusalem for the Passover, and thus the crowd is extra large.
And Jesus asks Philip a question, “Where can we buy food for everybody?”
John 6:6 NASB95
6 This He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do.
taken at face value, This was a “dumb” question: he presents Philip with an impossible scenario
to start with there is no place with enough food to feed 5000 (15,000)
even if there was, they didn’t have money
Modernize it: Spur of the moment, What restaurant can we call to deliver food for 15,000 people
Has Jesus presented a “dumb” situation in your life
put you into a impossible situation
seems that he is expecting too much from you
giving you too little to work with
He might be just testing you . . . He already has a plan, just wants to see how you will react/respond
John 6:7 NASB95
7 Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.”
Philip responded like some of us would
I’m going to ignore the fact that there is no such place
The master is letting his compassion cloud his common sense
so I will answer his question with some logic, to try to snap him out of this dumb idea
200 denarii = half a year’s pay, wouldn’t be enough to give everyone even a snack!
Modernize it: If I called Dominos and ordered 3,000 pizzas
that 3K x 6.99 (special discount) = $20,970
you know we don’t have $20K lying around
and even if we did, each person would only get about 1 and a 1/2 slice
Philip doubts because of the high cost
Are you doubting God because of the high cost of following him
high cost of what God has called you to do
high cost to yourself emotionally/mentally (I can’t go through that)
sacrificially - I can’t give THAT up
some times it is just plain old giving
John 6:8–9 NASB95
8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9 “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?”
Andrew jumps in the convo
maybe he had faith
or maybe he is trying to press home Philip’s point that this is a dumb/silly idea
we have 5 loaves (rolls), and two fish . . . but come on! It’s too many people
Andrew has doubt because of the small supply
are you doubting because of the small supply
there is simply not enough to meet my needs
there is not enough to fulfill my purpose/calling
not enough time, money, resources, connections . . . .
Back to the test question, “Where can we buy bread for all these people”
in other words, “Where can we get enough food from”
they never attempted to tell Jesus - WHERE
Philip - doesn’t answer the question, he stuck on the cost
Andrew - doesn’t ask the question, he is stuck on the supply
the answer is simple - from the Lord . . .that’s where
the answer to the test question, the solution to the test question . . . our help comes from the Lord
Don’t let the trials of life, confuse you on the simplest of solutions - despite it all, your help comes, will come, shall come from the Lord!
John 6:10 NASB95
10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
sit down means to recline - they ate in a reclining position
in other words, have the people prepare to eat
sometimes, you need to prepare for a miracle
don’t understand how, but I am ready to receive it
I will make out my grocery list, so when the money comes
I will research what kind of car will be best to buy, so that when the money comes
I will work on myself, so when that future spouse comes
I will study and learn, so when that opportunity comes
as a pastor, I have been convicted that I and we, need to do a better job of preparing for a miracle
getting our portable back into shape
put more emphasis on the facility improvement and building fund
John 6:11 NASB95
11 Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted.
Jesus took what he had and gave thanks . . . don’t forget to give thanks for what you have
Jesus used what he had . . . do the best you can with what you got, and let God multiply it
miracle not really explained, but someway, somehow . . . everyone got full (fish and bread)
someway, somehow . . . God will come through for you, for your ministry
(not always just for your personal needs)
John 6:12–14 NASB95
12 When they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
12 baskets of food left over, a “to go plate” for each disciple
John 6:15 NASB95
15 So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.
the people tried to make him king right then, and he had to escape
Lesson: have faith, even in impossible situations
those situations where you start to doubt if God has any clue
have faith, for he knows what he is going to do
