Life Application New Testament Commentary The Message to the Church in Ephesus / 2:1–7

The basic problem with the church in Ephesus is that even though church members had stood fast against evil and false teaching, they had left their love—their basic love for Christ and for one another.

2. Aquila, Priscilla, and Paul had planted the church in Ephesus (Orekma 19);
3. Timothy had ministered there (1 Timothy 1:3)
4. 1st letter is addressed to the church in Ephesus,
a. the crossroads of civilization
b. considered to be a city of great political importance.
-----------------------------
Revelation 2:1,”1 In pacl meet ah kowos misa in ngun ke sripen seakosten lowos ac ke ma koluk lowos.”
a. Ephesus was a center of land and sea trade,
b. for 3 major land-trade routes converged in the city,
c. and a large port sat on its coast on the Aegean Sea.
d. Along with Alexandria in Egypt and Antioch in Syria,
Ephesus was one of the 3 most influential cities in the eastern part of the Roman Empire.
Paul had ministered in Ephesus for 3 yrs and had warned the Ephesian believers that FALSE TEACHERS would come and try to draw people away from the faith (liye Orekma 20:29-31).
False teachers did indeed cause problems in the Ephesian church, but the church resisted them, as we can see from Paul’s letters to Timothy,
who stayed in Ephesus when Paul left for Macedonia.
John spent much of his ministry in the city and knew that these believers had resisted false teaching (2:2).
Although John was writing, the words are clearly from Christ, the one who holds the 7 stars in his right hand and walks amonth the 7 gold lampstands (1:13, 16).
Christ controls the churches.
Christ is described differently in every letter, mainly because each description is tied to the problems of the specific church.
Ephesus, the mother church of all the other churches was filled with pride.
That Christ held these churches in his hand shows that he was in control over the churches.
Ephesus had become a large, proud church, and Christ message would remind them that he alone is the head of the body of believers.

b. Every church should have pure faith and root out heresy.
c. But these good efforts should spring from their love for Jesus Christ and for other believers.
d. Both Jesus and John stressed love for one another as an AUTHENTIC PROOF of the gospel (John 13:34; 1 John 3:18-19).

INTRODUCTION:
EPHESUS:
WHAT BUILDS A FRIENDSHIP?
COMMON VALUES, IDEALS, AND EXPERIENCES HELP.
FRIENDSHIP ALSO NEEDS MUTUAL APPRECIATION AND RESPECT, VULNERABILITY, AND SPENDING MANY HOURS TOGETHER.
AND SHARED EXPERIENCES BOND PEOPLE—ESPECIALLY EXPERIENCES OF SUFFERING TOGETHER AND WORKING TOGETHER TO REACH A COMMON GOAL.
ALL ALL CHURCHES PLANTED AND VISITED ALONG PAUL MISSIONARY JOURNEYS, HE ENJOYED A VERY CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CHURCH OF EPHESUS.
PAUL FIRST VISITED THE CITY BRIEFLY ON HIS WAY HOME TO JERUSALEM (A.D. 53), BUT HE PROMISED TO RETURN (ACTS 18:19-21).
JUST ONE YEAR LATER
SIFAC: Nokomacng Sie Mwet SFasuc SCRIPTURE: Ephesus 4: 17-27
LIVING AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT/ 4:17-32
I. 4:17-24: SARUKLA MOUL MATU
A. LEAVE BEHIND THE OLD LIFE OF SIN BECAUSE THEY FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST,
B. WHICH SHOULD RESULT IN A RADICAL CHANGE IN THEIR BEHAVIOR.
II. 4:25-32
A. LIST NEGATIVE CHARACTERISTICS THAT HAVE NO PLACE IN THE CHURCH
B. POSITIVE CHARACTERISTICS THAT WILL REFLECT CHRIST CHARACTER.
1. LIVING THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IS A PROCESS.
2. ALTHOUGH WE HAVE A NEW NATURE,
3. WE DON’T AUTOMATICALLY THINK ALL GOOD THOUGHTS AND EXPRESS ALL RIGHT ATTITUDES.
4. BUT IF WE KEEP LISTENING TO GOD, WE WILL BE CHANGING ALL THE TIME.
5. WE MUST TRUST GOD TO CHANGE US ON THE INSIDE—OUR CHARACTER, VALUES, ATTITUDES, PERSPECTIVE AND MOTIVES.
I. MOUL SASU IN CHRIST [vv.17-20]

I. FULL OF LUST AND DECEPTION [SESESLA KE MOUL LUN IKWAC AC OUIYAC KUTACSRIK] (vv. 17-19) like a cancer

Believers are to be maturing in their faith
and using their gifts to benefit the church (4:11-16).
The believers in Ephesus must live no longer as the ungodly do.
He insisted that the Ephesian believers abandon what had been their former way of life,
not living any longer as the other ungodly around the because they were hopelessly confused,
referring to the natural tendency of human beings to employ intellectual pride, rationalizations, and excuses (Romans 1:21, BIBLE MUTAL, “21 Elos etu God, tusruktu elos tia akfulatyal oana ma fal elos in oru, ac elos tia pac sang kulo nu sel. A nunak lalos wangin sripa, ac lalfon, ac lohsrlana.”
Their thinking was “confused” because their lives were being wasted on worthless objects (idols),
untrue teachings,
and immoral behavior.
18 ac nunkalos lohsrla.
Ke sripen lalfon ac likkeke lalos, wangin ip lalos ke moul su God El ase.
Unbelievers - had closed minds that were full of darkness,
while the believers had found the light of Christ
and were given his wisdom.
Unbelievers were far away from the life of God,
while the believers had been made one with him through Christ.
19 Wangin pulakinyen mwekin selos;
Unbelievers don’t care anymore about right and wrong;
they have no feeling about their degenerate condition.
Such people are beyond feeling either shame for their evil
or hope for anything better concerning their condition before God.

CONTEXT:
we must understand the culture that surrounded the believers in and around Ephesus.
The temple to the goddess Artemis (the roman name was Diana) stood in Ephesus.
Artemis was the goddess of fertility in women, animals and nature.
Her temple had a hierarchy of religious personnel,
including eunuch priests,
young virgins,
prostitute priestesses.
One month every year was devoted to ceremonies honoring Artemis.
A carnival atmosphere that included CONCERTS, FEASTS, ATHLETIC GAMES, AND PLAYS CREATED OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMMORALITY, DRUNKENNESS, AND SENSUALITY.
TO THE JEWS, WORSHIP AT THE TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS WAS EXTREMELY CORRUPT.
CHRISTIANS, AS WELL, WERE NOT TO TAKE PART IN ITS PRACTICES.
ac oru ma fohkfok nukewa ac kofla sifacna tulokinya.
II. MA LUTIYUK NU SUWOS KE CHRIST
20 Tia pa ingan ma kowos luti ke Christ!
Mwet lulalfongi Ephesus tuh lotella ke Christ sel Paul sifacna ac kutu mwet luti sayac.
TO KNOW CHRIST (IS THE GREATEST KNOWLEDGE THAT ANYONE CAN HAVE.
THAT KNOWLEDGE IS THE TRUTH;
THAT KNOWLEDGE OPPOSES WHAT THE EVIL WORLD TEACHES AND APPLAUDS.
THEREFORE, WHAT THE EPHESIANS AND OTHER BELIVERS WERE TAUGHT SHOULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LIFESTYLES.
------------------------------------------------
[vv. 21-22]
21 Kowos lohng na pwaye kacl, ac ke kowos mwet lulalfongi in el, lutiyuk kowos tari ke ma pwaye lun Jesus.
22 Ouinge kowos in sisla ouiyen moul matu lowos ma kowos moulkin in pacl meet — moul se su kunauskowosla ke sripen kena lowos nu ke ma kikiap.
JESUS PA MA PWACYE UH (JOHN 14:6, BIBLE MUTAL, “6 Jesus el topkol ac fahk, “Nga pa inkanek, ac pwaye, ac moul; wangin mwet som nu yurin Papa fin tia ke nga.”
THIS IS THE TRUTH THAT THE EPHESIANS HEARD AND BELIVED.
THIS IS THE TRUTH THAT BRINGS SALVATION.
WHILE UNBELIEVERS LIVE IN DARKNESS AND SENSUALITY,
BELIEVERS WERE TAUGHT A WHOLE NEW MANNER OF LIVING,
WHICH THROW OFF THE OLD EVIL NATURE AND FORMER WAY OF LIFE.
THE “OLD NATURE” DESCRIBES EACH PERSON BEFORE HE OR SHE COMES TO KNOW CHRIST.
THE OLD NATURE WAS ROTTEN THROUGH AND THROUGH,
FULL OF LUST AND DECEPTION (AS PAUL DESCRIBED IN 4:17-19 ABOVE).
ii. like a cancer, the evil nature spreads and destroys.
iii. the person is enslaved to sin
iv. bound to the world,
v. without hope
THOSE WHO HAVE ACCEPTED CHRIST ARE STILL SUSCEPTIBLE TO TEMPTATIONS AND THE EVILS OF THE SINFUL NATURES.
PAUL DOES NOT DISTINQUISH BETWEEN 2 PARTS OR 2 NATURES WITHIN THE PERSON.
THE OLD SELF DESCRIBES THOSE AREAS OF REBELLION AGAINST GOD.
WE MUST FORSAKE THIS FORMER LIFESTYLE.
TO THROW OFF THAT OLD NATURE WILL TAKE CONSCIOUS, DAILY DECISIONS TO REMOVE ANYTHING THAT SUPPORTS OR FEEDS THE OLD SELF’S DESIRES.
----------------------------------------------
[vv. 23-24] AKSASUYE KOWOS
23 Insiowos ac nunkowos enenu in arulana aksasuyeyukla,
24 ac kowos enenu in nokomang mwet sasu, su orekla in luman God, ac su fwackyuk in moul pwaye, su suwoswos ac mutal.
AKSASUYEYKOWOS
CANNOT GET RID OF THE OLD EVIL NATURE WITHOUT PUTTING ON A NEW NATURE.
BELIEVERS MUST FOLLOW WITH TWO (2) SPECIFIC ACTIONS:
THERE MUST BE A SPIRITUAL RENEWAL OF YOUR THOUGHTS AND ATTITUDES,
THEY MUST DISPLAY A NEW NATURE.
WHILE WE ARE STILL ON THIS EARTH, WE WILL STRUGGLE WITH OUR OLD WAY OF LIFE.
PAUL UNDERSTOOD THE STRUGGLE CLEARLY (SEE ROME 7:14-25)
ROME 7:14-25 [KAIN IN KU LUO ALEIN IN SIE MWET]
[v. 14],
KUT ETU LAH MA SAP UH MA LUN NGUN
A NGASIE MWET MOUL IN IKWA,
KUKAKINYUKLA OANA SIE MWET KOHS NU KE MA KOLUK.
[v.24-25], 24 Nga supwarla na pwaye! Su ac fah moliyula liki mano se inge, ma pwenyula nu ke misa? 25 Nga kulo nu sin God, su moliyula ke Leum lasr Jesus Christ!
Pa inge ouiyuk: in ku luk sifacna nga kulansupu ma sap lun God ke nunak luk mukena, ac moul in ikwa luk pa kulansupu ma sap lun ma koluk.”
IN EXPLAINING THESE CONCEPTS, SOME PEOPLE HAVE GIVEN THE IDEA THAT THERE ARE TWO SELVES OR TWO EQUAL-BUT-OPPOSIT POLES IN OUR LIFE (OLD AND NEW) WARRING AGAINST EACH OTHER.
THIS IS NOT HOW THE N.T. USED THESE WORDS.
CHRIST SEES HIS PEOPLE AS REDEEMED.
TRANSFORMATION BEGINS IN THE MIND AND RESULTS IN RENEWED BEHAVIOR.
HOW ARE BELIEVERS TO BE RENEWED IN THEIR THOUGHTS AND ATTITUDES?
THEY MUST:
BE INVOLVED IN ACTIVITIES THAT RENEW THEIR MINDS (PHILIPPI 4:8-9)[KAHS IN LUTI]
“8 In aksafye kas luk, mwet lili, pacl nukewa kowos in nunku ke ma su wo ac su fal in kaksakinyuk: ma su pwaye, ma su yohk sripa, ma su suwohs, ma su nasnas, ma su ohi, ac ma su pwengpeng wo. 9 Orekmakin ma su kowos lotela ac eis sik, kewana ke kas luk ac orekma su nga oru. Ac God, su ase misla nu sesr, El fah wi kowos.
PHILIPPI 4:8-9, BIBLE MUTAL, “
THE DESIRE TO PATTERN THEMSELVES AFTER GOD, NOT THE WORLD (ROMANS 12:2, BIBLE MUTAL), “2 Kowos in tia etai luman moul lun mwet faclu, a kowos in ekla ke sripen God El arulana aksasuye nunak lowos. Na kowos fah ku in etu ma lungse lun God — ma su wo, ac mwe akinsewowoyel, ac suwoswoslana.”
STUDY AND APPLY GOD’S WORD SO THAT IT CHANGES THEIR BEHAVIOR FROM WITHIN (2 TIMOTHY 3:15-16, BIBLE MUTAL, “
15 ac tuh ke pacl se kom tulik me kom nuna etu ke Ma Simusla mutal, su ku in asot nu sum lalmwetmet in kol kom nu ke molela su tuku ke lulalfongi in Christ Jesus. 16 Ma Simusla nukewa ituku ke Ngun lun God, ac oasr sripa in luti ma pwaye, in kai, in aksuwosye, ac in aketeya ouiyen moul suwohs,”
THIS NEW PERSON IS CREATED ACCORDING TO THE LIKENESS OF GOD
RIGHTEOUS,
HOLY,
AND TRUE.
WE HAVE RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD THAT RESULTS IN RIGHT BEHAVIOR,
CREATES AN AVERSION TO SIN,
PROMPTS US TO DEVOTE OURSELVES TO HIS SERVICE.
THESE QUALITIES ARE “TRUE,”
MEANING THEY CANNOT BE FAKED.
THESE IS TOTAL OPPOSITE OF THE OLD WAY OF LIVING CHARACTERIZED BY SIN AND CORRUPTION.
FINALLY, THE NEW PERSON REFERS NOT TO A SPLIT IN ONE’S PERSONALITY;
INSTEAD, IT PICTURES THE NEW DIRECTION, ATTITUDE, AND MIND-SET AWAY FROM SELF AND TOWARD GOD AND HIS WILL.
[V. 25] THE NEW NATURE WILL LEAD TO SPECIFIC WAYS OF ACTING.
25 Ke ma inge kowos in tia sifil kikiap! Kais sie mwet enenu in kaskas pwaye nu sin mwet wialos in lulalfongi, mweyen kut nukewa lahn sie sin sie in Christ.
[THE CHURCH] MUST PUT AWAY ALL FALSEHOOD.
FALSEHOOD - ANYTHING THAT PERTAINS TO OLD LIFESTYLE AND IS NOT PART OF CHRIST’S TRUTH.
THEY MUST PUT ON THE WILLINGNESS TO TELL THE TRUTH TO THEIR NEIGHBOR.
SEE ZACHARIAH 8:16, [LEUM GOD EL WULELA MU EL AC FOLOKONAK AN JERUSALEM”
“16 Pa inge ma kowos enenu in oru: Kaskas in pwaye nu sin sie sin sie. In pacl in nununku, kowos oru nununku lowos an in suwohs ac pwaye, tuh in oasr misla.
WE DO THIS BECAUSE WE BELONG TO EACH OTHER.
PAUL STRESSED OUR MUTUAL RESPONSIBILITY.
BECAUSE WE ARE ALL MEMBERS OF CHRIST’S BODY,
OUR WORDS AND ACTIONS MUST NOT BE DESTRUCTIVE TO THE BODY.
LYING TO EACH OTHER DISTRUPS UNITY BY CREATING CONFLICTS AND DESTROYING TRUST.
IT TEARS DOWN RELATIONSHIP AND LEADS TO OPEN WARFARE IN A CHURCH.
TRUTHFULNESS, HOWEVER, OPENS THE DOOR TO UNDERSTANDING.
TO MAINTAIN UNITY, THE BELIEVERS MUST BE COMMPLETELY TRUTHFUL WITH ONE ANOTHER.
---------------------------------------------
[vv.26=27] ANOTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OLD NATURE THAT HAS BE PUT OFF IS “BAD TEMPER, OR A LIFESTYLE CHARACTERIZED BY ANGER.”
26 Kowos fin mulat, nik kowos lela mulat lowos in kolkowosla nu ke ma koluk, ac kowos in tia sruokya mulat lowos len fon se.
27 Nikmet sang pacl lun devil.
[PSALM 4:4,BIBLE MUTAL], [PSALM LAL DAVID KE SIE PRE IN SUK KACSRU KE EKU]
“4 Kowos in rarrar ke sangeng, ac tia sifil oru ma koluk;
Nunku akloalya ke ma se inge
Ke kowos oan in misla fin mwe oan kiowos.”
THE BIBLE DOESN’T TELL US THAT WE SHOULDN’T FEEL ANGRY,
BUT IT POINTS OUT THAT IT IS IMPORTANT TO HANDLE OUR ANGER PROPERLY.
WE MUST NOT INDULGE OUR ANGRY FEELINGS OR LET THEM LET TO PRIDE, HATRED, OR SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS.
JESUS CHRIST BECAME ANGRY AT THE MERCHANTS IN THE TEMPLE,
BUT WAS RIGHTEOUS ANGER AND DID NOT LED HIM TO SIN.
BELIEVERS MUST FOLLOW JESUS’ EXAMPLE.
WE OUGHT TO RESERVE OUR ANGER FOR WHEN WE SEE GOD DISHONORED OR PEOPLE WRONGED.
IF WE GET ANGRY, WE MUST DO SO WITHOUT SINNING.
TO DO THIS, WE SHOULD DEAL WITH OUR ANGER BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN.
