Son of Abraham

Intro

About 2,000 years have passed between Adam and Abraham- and they weren’t pleasant. It didn’t take long for things to get bad after Adam sinned. His own child would become the first murderer in history, killing his brother Abel. Their children would follow in his footsteps and corruption would grow and spread. Within a couple generations, corruption was filling the earth as fast as the people could spread out. It would get so bad that God would flood the Earth, wiping out all people except for Noah and his family. But then, they also were corrupt and the people would repeat the mistakes of Adam, attempting to usurp God at the tower of Babel. God would scatter them and confuse their language.

Then, after a while longer, we are introduced to a man named Abram.

Genesis 12:1–3 ESV

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

This man was going to turn out to hear some amazing things from God, and he would end up being a critical piece to how God was going to begin to fix what Adam had broke.

What does God promise to Abraham?

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness. And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”

When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”

The Fulfillment

The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.
