It’s very important to understand that the foundation of Bible doctrines, such as the purpose and meaning of Baptism, are not just understood by one verse.
Baptism is a simple step of obedience that some have redefined for their own purposes, not because salvation through water baptism is taught by the Word. Through careful study one comes to the understanding that water baptism is a picture of the Gospel and a person’s faith in the Lord, not an action required for salvation.
Acts 2:38 (KJV 1900)
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for (eis = as a result of) the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
"repent, and be baptized.. in the name of Jesus Christ “for” (Greek: eis- = because of) the remission of sins"
The Greek word "Eis" means "because of” in these additional following scriptures:
Matthew 3:11 (KJV 1900)
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto (eis = because of) repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
Matthew 10:41 (KJV 1900)
41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in (eis = because of) the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.
Mat 12:41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at (eis = because of) the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
Acts 7:53 (KJV 1900)
53 Who have received the law by (eis = because of) the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
If baptism was necessary for salvation, then why did Peter (or Paul) say nothing of baptism saving us in other sermons:
Acts 3:12–26 (KJV 1900)
12 And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?
13 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go.
14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;
15 And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
16 And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
17 And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.
18 But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.
22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.
23 And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.
24 Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days.
25 Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
Acts 5:29–32
29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
Acts 10:34–43
34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)
37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
a) Baptism is not part of the gospel of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection that saves us.
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
"The gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes.'
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
It’s clear thorough scripture that Jesus redeems people to God by His blood, not by water baptism.
Revelation 5:9 (KJV 1900)
9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
“Christ Sent Me Not To Baptize” would be a very strange thing to say if baptism was necessary for salvation.
I Cor 1:17
1 Corinthians 1:17 (KJV 1900)
17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
Those that believe are justified by Jesus:
Acts 13:39 (KJV 1900)
39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Acts 26:18 (KJV 1900)
18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
b) PAUL, was saved in Acts 9:6
6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.
Paul called Jesus "Lord".
1 Corinthians 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
Acts 9:17 (KJV 1900)
17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.
Which took place before his baptism
18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.
because he was filled with the Holy Spirit & Ananias called him "brother" meaning saved (I Cor :11
c) CORNELIUS was saved and filled with the Holy Spirit
Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
Acts 10:44 (KJV 1900)
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
(Which was before his baptism)
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
d) Propitiation is through the Lord’s blood, not through water baptism:
Romans 3:25 (KJV 1900)
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
e) "repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name" not baptism.
Luke 24:47 (KJV 1900)
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
We see the clear steps of preaching and salvation in Romans 10:13-15
Sending, Preaching, Hearing, Believing, Calling upon the Lord (Faith), Saving
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
a) Baptism of water or the word of God:
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
John 15:3 (KJV 1900)
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
Those that would have eternal life simply:
Call:
21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Ask:
10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
Receive:
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Come: John 6:37
37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Believe in Jesus:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
john 11:25
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
39 And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Romans 10:9–10 (KJV 1900)
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
BAPTISM DOES NOT SAVE US from SIN, only Jesus' BLOOD Saves Us and the gift of salvation is received by simple faith in Jesus and His finished work in the Gospel.
