Gratitude, thanksgiving, is one of the great weapons of our warfare.
A heart that gives thanks is a heart full of Joy.
The man or women, boy or girl, who is able to enjoy the fellowship of friends and family, to get maximum pleasure from food and drink, to laugh mightily and to offer a toast to the King, you must be a thankful person.
Thankful to God for the senses he has given us to
Thankful for the aroma and taste the goodness of this feast
Thankful for the hands of God’s servants who prepared the food
Thankful for the laughter that echoes throughout this house today.
For us to be thankful, we must make it a practice to remember well.
A short memory or a selective memory is the enemy of a thankful person.
Christopher Hall writes,
Some of us have forgotten the long story of our lives and the instances of God’s provision dotting the years.
Maybe recent events have been painful, heart-rending, tragic; our tears have blurred our vision and our memory has shrunk: we have forgotten or overlooked how God has cared for us over the long haul.
Others of us remember selectively—we forget God’s goodness and provision and remember times of drought—days when the rains of God’s favor seemed distant
Thanksgiving results from a long memory that remembers and meditates on “God’s blessings and his greatness and loving faithfulness.”
