Metaphorical point -
- Now is the time for people to "Turn" to God in belief!
There are so many things that are constantly crashing into our theology in attempts to destroy how we see God.
Barrels - ?
- But there ought to be somebody ready to speak up...........and show up.....for Gods sake
Theological barrel -
1. The suffering of Christ and our suffering
- Jurgen Moltman (German Theologian)
"if we regard Jesus' passion as real, we have to say that God himself was involved with the suffering of Christ on the Cross."
- How can Christian faith understand Christ's passion as the revelation of God if the deity cannot suffer?
1. God is decisively and definitively revealed in the shame and the suffering of the cross.
It is the nature of love.......he says.......that requires us to take seriously the idea of the suffering of God.
And so.....a suffering God does not make God less........
.....But rather a truly loving, passionate, and involved........person!
And........so God..........is a God that knows how to get involved......especially when there is suffering......
(pause)
God does not leave me........when I need God most!!
(Somebody needed to hear that!)
Biblical barrel -
1. David and Goliath story
David showed up and spoke up..........
"Who is this uncircumcised Philistine?"
.......I don't know about you but.......
"I don't serve a weak God.......nor do I serve a God who is not with me....."
But.........
"I serve a God who has DECIDED and DECLARED to be all the way in my life..........even when he did not have to......"
(Pause)
-And.........I see Peter in a role of reminding us how to know God in our suffering......!
V. 32 - 33 (read)
Acts 9:32 NRSV
Now as Peter went here and there among all the believers, he came down also to the saints living in Lydda.
Acts 9:33 NRSV
There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years, for he was paralyzed.
1. Peter is faithfully visiting the churches to see how they are doing.......
This is an apostolic visitation.....for the purpose of inspection.....
We find him energetically concerned even though the Church is at peace according to verse 31.......
A. He is sacrificing time and energy to assure that the Church is prospering!
He is making his rounds.........and he discovers something........
(Pause)
B. He finds a problem - (v.33)
Problem -
For the past eight years......
......... this suffering man has had to lay on a pallet for the whole day!
Significance -
a. Duration - 8 yrs. (Extensive timeframe)
b. Position - Down....and Restricted....vs. being Up and moving
(Pause)
- A lot can happen in 8 years........and from the perspective of those who have been passing by this man's location.......
(slight pause)
They have watched him suffer..........for so long......
......until they have no viable reason to believe that anything different is going to take place in his life.......
(Pause)
Every day........for eight years..........this man has been restricted.......
Barrel -
Freedom.....
Is there anything/anyone in your life, or around your life that is being restricted into a “Downward” position?
.........and sometimes we become so used to seeing this that we forget that
.....our lives are supposed to speak faith!
(pause)
1. Driving to work........and you see the same stuff........on the road year after year...
You don't expect anything different.....
2. Some of us have woke up day after day......year after year..............in the same condition........
And we don't expect anything different......
(Pause)
Key - The problems are always going to show up............but the key is how we see them...
- Because how you see the problem determines what we do with it!
v. 34 (read)
Acts 9:34 NRSV
Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; get up and make your bed!” And immediately he got up.
1. Look at how quickly Peter deals with this problem.......
Spiritual Imagination -
"I know its been 8 years......"
but........
"I don't see this problem in its final stage........
"Jesus Christ.......maketh thee whole"
"Arise"
After 8 years.........day after day.......
"Arise"
How..........
"Jesus Christ maketh thee whole"
(pause)
And not only that.........but Peter says
........your bed has been given too much control........
(pause)
Your bed has been describing you.........
You have created a habit that is not Faith level mindset......
by.........laying your bed out due to your restrictions............
(pause)
But God is now rebuilding and restoring your life.........
And so now instead of laying your bed out.............now it's time for you to.....
Make your bed..........because you're getting ready to Get Up!!
In other words.........
Jesus just Redefined You!!
(pause)
- I wonder if anybody can testify that something had you down for 8 years.......
(Pause)
But Jesus!
.....Redefined You!
(Pause)
Notice now.............
The author of the text.......really doesn't spend that much time elaborating on this suffering man...........
The text simply tells us he had a problem......
And then what Peter is doing to fix the problem ........
(pause)
And the reason he doesn't spend an extraordinary amount of time on this mans suffering........is because the highlight is at the "TURN" or the Faith transition!
See...........the problem.........is only the set up
(Pause)
Freedom.......
You thought..........that all of the hell you were going through...........was just in your life to bother you........
But Because ............so many people.........are watching your life.........
God is saying.........
its happening ..........so that some people can get ready for the..........."TURN"
(pause)
You spent 8 years............for the TURN to take place!
It's time for somebody to....
.............. Look at everything that's Miracle material in your life.............differently for the first time....
(Look at it now)
V.35 (read)
Acts 9:35 NRSV
And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.
When these people saw..........this man who was down......and restricted for 8 years..........
Making up his bed..........
(pause)
Nobody thought he could move........
.because nobody had ever seen him move in 8 years.........
(pause)
But...........all he needed was for somebody to show up............and sat something that sounded different!
(pause)
And so here comes Peter on his assignment of apostolic visitation.......for the purpose of inspection..........
And instead of looking at the problem and being struck by fear.........
He looked at a problem that said I can not be moved.......
And shouted...........
In The Name of Jesus..........
"MOVE"
(Pause)
And now............everybody who missed the TURN before.........
Are now.........TURNING to the Lord..........
(pause)
Freedom.......
Key -
When you get up from this........
(Pause)
When everybody sees what only God can do..........in your life......
"People are going to start turning towards God!"
Let me help somebody...........
The turn doesn't happen without a suffering Anaeas.........and his 8 years......
The people had to see his problem to appreciate his deliverance!
And........
The turn doesn't happen with a scary, lazy, uncommitted Peter...........
But because Peter steps up and speaks up..........
The anointing and the power of Christ released..........and announced!!
"I got to say some thing - part 2!!"
