To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest;
to all who mourn and long for comfort;
to all who struggle and desire victory;
to all who sin and need a Savior;
to all who are strangers and want fellowship;
to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness;
we welcome you here today.
We pray God’s Word will provide rest, comfort, victory as we point you to our Savior today.
Today we look to Jesus and live.
Today we Come and See.
Prayer

Prayer for Stephen and GriefShare

We will get to our passage soon but I would like to take a moment to pray for our GriefShare team.
Psalm 130:1 “1 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD.”
Psalm 130:1 KJV
1 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD.
Lamenting is a holy and healthy endeavor.
Lament is a prayer in pain that leads to trust.
How to grieve and lament in something that the Bible speaks about often, but many times as Christians we have been silent.
We have chosen the happier notes of life instead of these minor keys.
Grateful for the Cofields and Sykes serving our church and community in this manner.
This week I stood in are of two young ladies who were saying “good by” to their mother. The strong theological teaching they had been given not only provided them peace to know they would see their mother again but also gave them confidence they could go with God with their present heartache.
As we all know grieving is not a one time. Event we all need Christian friends to help us learn how to grieve in a healthy and holy manner. That is what GriefShare provides.
As Christians we know grief has room for joy—and even laughter—because it’s tethered to the ultimate victory already won for us by Jesus.

Sermon Introduction

Please, join me for a longer reading of passage. Please, follow the story.
We will spend 4 weeks in this portion of Scripture.
Before I read the passage. I would like to give you a brief outline to this passage.
Before Titus we are going to spend time being reminded of the great privilege we have to invite people to Come and See.
As the ushers are handing out this Invitation to a Gospel Conversation I would like to ask 3-4 of you men to come up here and get the ones I have with me.
Realized this printed of paper did not remove from me the fear of talking to people anbout Jesus. Fear is wonderful because it reminds me of my need for faith.
Fear says you “don’t have the ability”
Faith says, I am not relying upon my ability.
Invitation to a Conversation about Jesus
Today our emphasis is that Jesus seeks and saves the lost.
From the earliest pages of Scriptures, we witness God's relentless pursuit of lost humanity. This pursuit is beautifully exemplified in the New Testament, where we discover that Jesus' purpose was to "seek and save that which was lost." Without God's self-revelation through His general revelation and His Word, we would remain unaware of His existence and character. His proactive engagement with us allows us to know Him.
Bible Reading John 1:35–50
John 1:35–50 KJV
35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; 36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! 37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? 39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. 42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. 43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me. 44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. 46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! 48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. 49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. 50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

Book of John

Purpose of the Book. Jesus of Nazareth is the eternal Word of God. John 20:31 “31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”
John 20:31 KJV
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
First 18 verses make 30 separate statements about Jesus.
Most remarkable. Jesus is God, the eternal Word in flesh. John 1:14 “14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14 KJV
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Not just that Jesus is the Christ. But that He is the Son of God.
This book proves Jesus is the Messiah and the Messiah is the Son of God.
From v.19 to the rest of the book introduces Jesus to the world.
First public introduction in this way. John 1:29 “29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
John 1:29 KJV
29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

This portion is precious to us.

Historical Value - we hear of the first disciples of Christ.
Practical Value - We see how men come to Christ and we see how invite others to know Jesus
Christological Value - Five men introduced to a man in terms that did not know

The phrase “come and see”, that you will hear often over the next 2 weeks comes from v. 39-46

John 1:39 “39 He (Jesus) saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.”
John 1:39 KJV
39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
John 1:46 “46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.”
John 1:46 KJV
46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
Simple Stated: Our invitation for people to meet Jesus is simply an extension of His invitation to them.
This truth ran me over many years ago. At the 2010 Summits I was reading the book Operation World. Realized we knew little to nothing about India. Friend saids we need to go. We met many people. Saw many things that were encouraging. Saw places with very little and no gospel witness. ---- Varanasi we were overwhelmed. The smoke. The sounds. The amount of people. The visual of hopelessness. Seeing people who had been deceived by false religion. A young man motioned for me to see something. “Come and See” / He wanted to draw me closer to what I was seeing.
Young man was seeking for answers any place that he could.

Because people that knew Jesus came and found me I was not standing by a river seeking Jesus.

The God of Heaven cares about me. The cross made this statement clear.
The God of Heaven sent His son.
The God of Heaven has made it possible for me to be forgive of my sin.
The God of Heaven has made Himself knowing to us.
The God of Heaven is pursuing me. I felt the conviction of sin and was being drawn to God.

Though different, very much the same

I understood what this young man was seeking because I had sought for it as well.
John 1:38 “38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?”
John 1:38 KJV
38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
Question to these me but two us all.
Something that would bring meaning to life.
Looking for peace.
Wanting to know who is God and does He care about me.

They answered His question with a question.

What seek ye?
Where do you stay?

Jesus reveals Himself to those who seek Him.

First impression was that Jesus was an authoritative teacher.

Moved from Rabbi to Messiah. / Rabbi is a Hebrew word. You know some Hebrew.
Rabbi is teacher. That is not the place to stop with Jesus.

Jesus invites them to “come and see.”

John 1:39 “39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.”
John 1:39 KJV
39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
They asked and Jesus gave them 8 hours.
Jesus was not hiding who He was.
Creation testifies that our God wants to be known. Psalm 19:1 “1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
Psalm 19:1 KJV
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
The Word of God testifies that God wants to be known. Psalm 19:7 “7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.”
Psalm 19:7 KJV
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
God’s ultimate demonstration of His desire for us to know Him and be reconciled to Him is see in the cross.

They will see this Rabbi, is the Messiah, and the Messiah is the Son of God.

John 1:41 “41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.”
John 1:41 KJV
41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
How did they come to that conclusion?
It would have been seen in his dwelling. It was not seen in miracles.
They heard His words and believed!
Jesus reveals this to them!
Significance in the difference between Rabbi & Son of God
Jesus is not just giving great teaching.
Jesus was not just a central figure to the history of Israel
Jesus is God. He knows you completely.
He was there when you sinned.
He knows your thoughts.
You have sinned against Him.
He still loves you and dies for you.
Pray that Holy Spirit leads you into this understanding, John 16:13 “13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
John 16:13 KJV
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Jesus reveals Himself in this way in His public ministry.

Jesus walks into Synagogue and offers to read. Luke 4:16 “16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.”
Luke 4:16 KJV
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
Custom was for visiting Rabbis to read Scriptures.
He read from Is 61:1-2
Isaiah 61:1–2 KJV
1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
Just read the scripture. Pause. Nothing.
Then things will get very loud. Luke 4:21 “21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”
Luke 4:21 KJV
21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
Jesus states the Lord anointed me. The Messiah is the anointed one.
Andrew didn’t need the word Messiah translated; the Christ, the anointed one. We do.
Isaiah 61:1 “1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;”
Isaiah 61:1 KJV
1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
The Father is the anointer.
Result of being anointed was the Holy Spirit.
Acts 10:38 “38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”
Acts 10:38 KJV
38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

This is the understanding that those who responded to his invitation to “come and see”

Their understanding went from teacher to the Son of God
This is still happening today. College student. I really want to know.
Read this portion with a student at UT in his dorm room. Hebrews 11:6 “6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
Hebrews 11:6 KJV
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

There was a time when they saw Jesus as the son of God

John 1:39 “39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
John 1:39 KJV
39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
Kids song “It was a Monday.. it was on a Tuesday..” Not concerned you know the day, but you know there was day.
Do you remember the day that Jesus stopped by your way?
Joe Nailers story

Notice the evidence that Andrew truly saw Jesus for who He is

John 1:41 “41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.”
John 1:41 KJV
41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
The greatest comfort we could provide our loved ones that we truly knew Jesus was that we lived our lives helping others meet His as well.

Wonderful ministry of Andrew

Andrew who? Simon Peters brother
No prominent place in the stories.
But when we see Andrew we see him bringing people to Jesus.
Andrew who watched as his brother preached and saw 3,000 come to Christ
So much came from Andrew sharing with his brother “we have found the Messiah”

Believer why do you spend a life of seeking when we have found and been found in Jesus.

Do you know Jesus as more than Rabbi?
Have you responded to His invitation to come and see?
Who can you find and let them know what you have found?

Prayer for Believers

Ask you today? What are you seeking?

John 1:38 “38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?”
John 1:38 KJV
38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
In this seeking I pray that you meet Jesus.
He wants you to know Him.
He invites you to “come and see”
He wants you to see that He is more than a traveling Rabbi. He is the son of God who came to die in your place.
He is the answer to all that you have been seeking.
Today would be a good day to stop seeking and recognize that you have been found by Him.
God has been pursuing you. Through the circumstances of you life that led you to to place and most importantly through the work of the Holy Spirit in your heart to convict you of sin.
“Jesus, I believe you are the Son of God. You have seen me completely. You know me. I repent of my sins and I trust in you.”
