II Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
I.
The need is great for God’s people to study His Word
This speaks of apriority to study the Word.
The greek word for study is σπουδάζω.
This word means to be diligent, earnest, or eager, to make every effort to do one’s best.
To set your heart upon learning what the Bible says.
Psalm 119:97 O how love I thy law!
It is my meditation all the day.
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
I Timothy 4:13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Give Attendance-Pay attention give time effort and energy to studying and teaching the Word of God.
II.
The study of the Word of God is work
There is a need for persistence when studying the Word of God.
Workman-a spiritual worker for the kingdom of God.
Looking to reap are harvest for the Lord.
The idea of diligent worker is one who toils and labors to the point of exhaustion.
III.
The Study of God’s Word is to please God
Approved-to be accepted, to be received, to be tried as metals by fire
An Audience of one
The idea is that the study that you have done and even the reason you have done it is to be accepted by God.
You are not looking for the approval of man.
Rightly Divide-We need to cut straight to the truth.
We need to accurately teach the Word of God.
This a responsibility of pastors, but also every believer needs to be studying the Word of God and learning what it means.
A team of two
John 14:26
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Illumination: The Holy Spirit opening our eyes to the wonderful truths of God’s Word
Psalm 119:18
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
Without the Lord helping us it is a waste of our time.
Lots of people study the Bible but come wrong interpretation because they do not have the Holy Spirit.
We need God to illuminate our understanding.
That is done through the Holy Spirit.
Illumination requires prayer and humility.
‌In order to please God we must also have a spirit of humility.
You won’t always be right.
IV.
The studying of the Word of God requires the right priorities
Psalm 63:1 (KJV 1900)
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: My soul thirsteth for thee, My flesh longeth for thee In a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;
Do you have a spiritual thirst?
Do you have a desire to put God first?
Job 23:12 (KJV 1900)
Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

Can you think of a tough topic or passage that you have avoided because you knew it would take more time than you were willing to give?
Will you make a decision to make some extra time to study the Word of God during this series?
