Moved lots of times in my life.
13 grade schools.
6 in one year.
Been to 48 states. Lived in half of those.
Traveled a lot in business and ministry.
Some things you figure out over time.
Every place is different. Every place is the same
Even when the language and culture are different, people are more alike than different.
In so many good ways they seem the same. A Russian family loves and seeks to provide for them. Their housing might be a 5 room apartment for a family of 6, but their love is deep. Outside they may appear distant and closed. But in their home, they laugh and care.
And also it is true that in bad ways people are the same. Sin runs deep. It has an impact in every area of life. People steal, lie, kill, and deceive everywhere you go. People struggle within and without. There is no escape. New locations / new situations are not the ultimate solutions. We must face our issues. We must face the sin that must be dealt with.
As things change. They also remain the same. Noah has survived the destruction of the flood. He and his family trusted and worshipped the Lord. They have a new start.
And yet with the new start, they face the same issues as those who came before.
Gen 9:18-18 They have a new start, but they must face the same issues.
.

I. A new start / Same issues: The sin danger remains

A. Sin awaits the careless Gen 9:18-21

(ESV) Genesis 9 18 The sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the people of the whole earth were dispersed. 20 Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard. 21 He drank of the wineand became drunkand lay uncoveredin his tent.

1. New Adam / Still sin

Previous success is no guarantee of continuing success

a. Take down your guard – trouble
Even for the one man that God declared righteous
b. Known for his faithfulness to do what God commanded
In a moment disaster awaits

2. Cycle of carelessness

First mention of wine – not a good thing

a. Was fermentation new?
Changes people
b. An avenue for sin to pounce
1) Noah / Lot / Jacob Never does drunkenness yield good

3. Noah sin Impacts his children

B. Sin produces sin Gen 9:22

(ESV) Genesis 9 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakednessof his father and told his two brothers outside.

1. Problem is not in the seeing but in the response to it

a. What did Ham do that was wrong?
1) Saw nakedness / Did nothing about it Made shamefulness public / Reveals deeper issues within 2) A message to Israel / The sin of the culture runs ancient / no coexistence

2. How does one respond when one discovers sin - tell everyone else so that they think badly of the person

Talk with others to create division and ‘sides’

3. Cause other’s to harbor ill will against someone even though they themselves were not impacted.

Sin spreads

C. Sin gets discovered Gen 9:24

(ESV) Genesis 9 24 When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had doneto him,

1. Sin is found out

Consequences await

a. Noah / Ham / Canaan

II. A new start / Same issues: A proper response to sin Gen 9:23

A. Did not join in the ridicule (or gossip)

(ESV) Genesis 9 23 Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

1. A totally different approach

Showed respect even in someone else’s failure

B. Sought to address the problem

(ESV) Genesis 9 23 Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

1. Part of a solution, not adding to the problem

Actions addressed the issue

2. Seek to help the person rather than rejoice in their fall

1 Cor 13 “not rejoice in sin, but rejoices in the truth”

C. Avoided the sin themselves

(ESV) Genesis 9 23 Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it on both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

1. Avoided any variation of sin

Not tempted to validate – be enticed to know

2. Not tempted to participate

When it is all done, Noah could thank these sons

D.

III. A new start / Same issues: Promises of consequences / blessing

A. Sin corrupts a heritage Gen 9:25

(ESV) Genesis 9 25 he said, “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be to his brothers.”

1. First recorded words spoken by Noah

Problem of the parents cascade down to their children

2. Curios that no comment on Ham himself – all the sons blessed

Youngest son cursed

a. Be a servant of servants - lowest position
Perhaps he told his son and he joined in the ridicule

3. The character of the father is anticipated in the deeds of the sons

a. Not because of the sins of Ham, but because they themselves acted like Ham, because of their own transgressions.

4. A prophecy of what is to come for Ham’s son Canaan

a. An indication of character
Ham passes on his character down Canaan line

5. An inclusion of the account for the benefit of Israel entering the land

a. Destroy them totally / Did not begin just now
Evil creates a heritage of evil / Don’t allow it in

6. What it is not

a. Is not a condemnation of all Ham’s descendants - those who settle in Africa / Black race
No mention of the rest of Ham’s line for blessing or cursing
1) Can make no judgments whatsoever about them
b. An unfair judgment inflicted on the innocent
1) Canaan ultimately settles in Palestine – a very wicked people – Even after God gives Abraham the land, He waits 400 years to bring ultimate judgment stating ‘their sin is not yet full’ – grace waits – but sin endures

B. Blessing in the line of Christ Gen 9:26

(ESV) Genesis 9 26 He also said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant.

1. Blessing on Yahweh

The godly line

2. The line of Jesus / the privileged line

C. Prosperity from dwelling with Him Gen 9:27

(ESV) Genesis 9 27 May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.”

1. Blessing based in his relationship with Shem line

Those who dwell in Jesus’ tent will be blessed

D. Life goes on for now Gen 9:28

(ESV) Genesis 9 28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 All the days of Noah were 950 years, and he died. 1 These are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood.

1. Noah is the last of the great aged patriarchs

Ages quickly drop to around 100 / Then down to normal ages

2. But all still live and die and until the end

What is critical is how one lives – how one relates to the Lord
