An appropriate way to start today’s sermon is to read a soldier’s comment about his praying.
A Soldier’s Prayer
I asked God for strength, that I might achieve,
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do great things,
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy,
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men,
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life,
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for, but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am among all men, most richly blessed
It is so much not that the things this soldier prayed for was wrong. But that he did not pray for the things that were better.
We often concentrate our pray for the things that meet what we feel we need or that others need. Perhaps we should look at the greater priorities as well. Perhaps we should pray for the things that are truly essential as well.
We need to especially pray as Christ would have us pray. That was the way Paul prayed. As he began his letter to the Colossians, he prayed for them. Even in His prayer it is about Christ. That they might know Him. That they might be empowered by Him. That Christ would be preeminent in their lives.
It’s about the preeminence of Christ in our prayers. A focus on what He desires for us and others.

(ESV) Colossians 1 23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister. 24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery hidden for agesand generations but now revealed to his saints. 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.
