Lead Off Question

How many of y’all have older siblings?

Illustration

I had one older brother and like every family we had chores. Sometimes he would have to take out the trash, and then other times I would have to take out the trash. (Picking up apples)

Transition

But with God, it was not that he had an abundance of sons to choose from to be the sacrifice for our sins. Rather, God had one son and chose to send him as a payment for our sin. God gave us all that he had so we could have a relationship with him again.

Bottom Line

God's grace is evident through his sacrifice for us.

Context

Bible Verse

Luke 2:1–5 NLT
At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child.

God’s grace is visible through the birth of Jesus.

Breakdown

God gave a promise that he would send a redeemer for the sinfulness and brokenness of mankind. So, really the birth of Jesus is not only God showing us his grace, but it is also, God the promise-keeper seen loving his creation.

Bottom Line

God's grace is evident through his sacrifice for us.

Bible Verse

John 3:16 NLT
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Jesus was not born to condemn us, but to save us.

Breakdown

God displayed his grace to us, not by abandoning and forgetting us, but rather by choosing to come save us. God gave all that he had for me and you! Jesus didn’t come down here to go back to God and relay that we were sinners and we were choosing to be disobedient to him. Jesus came and died KNOWING that we were sinners!

Bottom Line

God's grace is evident through his sacrifice for us.

Bible Verse

Mark 10:41–45 NLT
When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant. So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus modeled for us what a life of serving looks like.

Breakdown

Because of God’s grace to us visible in his son Jesus, we are now called to be gracious to those who we have the opportunity of knowing. Our grace should be evident, as Christ’s was, through how we serve.

Bottom Line

God's grace is evident through his sacrifice for us.
