Review & Overview
1. The Intention
1. The Intention
COMMENTARY: 2 Timothy is one of my all time favorite books in the Bible. And there are several reasons why.
COMMENTARY: This book is a very intimate letter to a very intimate friend at a very intimate time of Paul's life. So there is a serious tone to this letter because Paul acknowledges what season he is in, in life.
COMMENTARY: And Paul is writing to Timothy because he desires to see him, he misses his dear friend Timothy.
COMMENTARY: He wants to see him because Paul is in a very lonely state in his life because Paul is incarcerated at this time.
COMMENTARY: He is in the Mamertine prison in Rome. And this place is a bad place, it runs along the sewer system of Rome and currently does so it smells horrible, he can't get any visitors, so he is lonely, Look at...
2 Timothy 1:15-16= Notice they turned away from Paul not the Faith. During this time period Emperor Nero was in charge and launched a campaign against Christians and blamed them for burning down the city. So Christians were under a lot of persecution, Nero would make Christians wear robes and dip them in tar and burn them alive & put them on a stake to light his gardens.
15 This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. 16 The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain;
COMMENTARY: So Christians were fearful during this time and some were ashamed of Paul's boldness, this is why in Vs. 16 Paul appreciates a man for not being ashamed of Paul's chains. Turn with me to...
10 for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica—Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry.
COMMENTARY: So we see that Paul is writing this letter because he is lonely and wants to see Timothy.
21 Do your utmost to come before winter. Eubulus greets you, as well as Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brethren.
9 Be diligent to come to me quickly;
4 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy,
COMMENTARY: And that's one reason the second reason is to warn Timothy of False Doctrine & False teachers and we see that in ch. 2.
2. The Plot
2. The Plot
COMMENTARY: And the last thing by way of introduction is that this is Paul's last letter he wrote. Matter of fact, he knew it was his last letter. In...
6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand.
COMMENTARY: And this verse really sets the tone for this letter.
3. Chapter 1 Context
3. Chapter 1 Context
COMMENTARY: Chapter 1 through 2:15 Paul begins by encouraging Timothy like he does in all his letters.
COMMENTARY: Paul encourages Timothy by way of Reminder. This word remember comes up 4 times in Vs. 3-7.
COMMENTARY: And in Vs. 3-5 we see that Paul encourages Timothy by...
1. Being Thankful For His Memory Of Timothy Vs. 3-5 (3)
1. Being Thankful For His Memory Of Timothy Vs. 3-5 (3)
1.1 Involves His Prayers Vs. 3
1.1 Involves His Prayers Vs. 3
COMMENTARY: Notice, even though Paul was in Jail he still managed to pray for others, prayer is definitely not only for you but for others, it is a way to serve the Body of Christ, Paul was still serving even though he was in prison.
COMMENTARY: Paul was still serving the body of Christ by prayer, even though he was in prison.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—
COMMENTARY: Prayer is our weapon. It is a spiritual battle.
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,
Weapon Definition= a means of gaining an advantage or defending oneself in a conflict or contest.
31 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”
1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.
1.2 Involves Timothy’s Tears Vs. 4
1.2 Involves Timothy’s Tears Vs. 4
COMMENTARY: Paul remembers Timothy's tears on their last parting, possibly at Paul's 2nd Roman arrest. He will later ask him to join him in Rome in Chapter 4.
COMMENTARY: Remember Paul was lonely, because many had opposed or deserted and abandoned Paul. So his constant prayers for him and remembrance of Timothy brought Joy to him because Timothy was the real deal, and gave Paul hope of the next generation.
APPLICATION: Talk about how grateful I am for my Church family and the memories I have, so that one day I can look back and get Joy and encouragement from them.
COMMENTARY: And you know this is something Paul often did...
3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,
TALK ABOUT HOW HIS FOCUS WAS NOT ON HIS SITUATION BUT ON OTHERS & CHURCH FAMILY - HE WAS LOST IN HIS EXPERIENCE W/ THE CHURCH
COMMENTARY: So this is what Paul did again here, in the midst of his trial he meditated and was mindful of Timothy's love for him and his true faith in Jesus, which is a perfect Segway for our next thing that involves Paul's memories of Timothy.
1.3 Involves Timothy’s Genuine Faith Vs. 5
1.3 Involves Timothy’s Genuine Faith Vs. 5
ILLUSTRATION: "Counterfeit Detection" https://www.challies.com/articles/counterfeit-detection-part-1/
APPLICATION: we expect EVERYTHING that has value to be tested. The faith that is not tested is the faith that cannot be trusted.
COMMENTARY: The only way to know if we or anyone has a genuine Faith, is to be tested.
2 And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. 3 So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
COMMENTARY: Consider it all joy when you encounter various trials
12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;
19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
39 whom our fathers would not obey, but rejected. And in their hearts they turned back to Egypt,
11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
COMMENTARY: Paul witnessed Timothy's life and he was able to detect his genuine faith in Jesus. He even said in...
20 For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state.
COMMENTARY: The second way Paul encourages Timothy is by...
2. Reminding Him Who He Is Vs. 6-7 (5)
2. Reminding Him Who He Is Vs. 6-7 (5)
2.1 He Is Steadfast Vs. 6
2.1 He Is Steadfast Vs. 6
Stir Up Greek (ANAZOPYREO)= Ana- It’s a preposition, in the midst, between. Zōon- A living being. Pur- Fire.
Present Active Infinitive= Present Tense and Active Voice.
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
COMMENTARY: So God is the one that sparks this fire.
COMMENTARY: What happens if you don’t kindle a Fire?
COMMENTARY: It is our responsibility to feed that Fire! God is a consuming fire, it should consume our whole life.
29 For our God is a consuming fire.
COMMENTARY: The Lord’s fire will either consume us from the inside out or condemn us from the outside in.
Illustration Fire= Centralia PA 153 acres, In 1962 - 59 years ago.
and Burning Mountain. It’ll burn for about 250 years.
Leonard Ravenhill Quote: "You never have to advertise a fire. Everyone comes running when there's a fire. Likewise, if your church is on fire, you will not have to advertise it. The community will already know it."
2.2 He Is Not Fearful Vs. 7a
2.2 He Is Not Fearful Vs. 7a
COMMENTARY: We are to stir up or kindle the gift of God in us because God has not given us a Spirit of Fear.
COMMENTARY: Fear could cripple and smother that flame inside of us.
COMMENTARY: It is normal (for lack of better word) to Fear stirring up the gift of God because it is not natural for us to tap into the supernatural. It will take us out of our comfort zone.
Why would Timothy Be scared?
COMMENTARY: he is in a big city and he is from a small town and people talked down on him because of his youth, they didn’t respect him
COMMENTARY: or because emperor Nero was massacring Christians left and right, and the church was persecuted.
Illustration and My Story
Illustration: Fear is a Lie! Your Fear is always about what is going to happen next, so you fear that which does not exist.
COMMENTARY: So if you fear the non-existent then your fear is imaginary.
COMMENTARY: YOUR NOT ROOTED IN REALITY, YOU ARE ALWAYS ROOTED IN YOUR FEARS.
COMMENTARY: Your mind does not know what is real and what is fake.
ILLUSTRATION: My Story, how I have experienced a lot heart aches but this year has been really rough!
What Do We Do When We Encounter Fear? - Focus on what is Real! Which are God's Promises!
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
2.3 He Is Powerful Vs. 7b
2.3 He Is Powerful Vs. 7b
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 11 I have become a fool in boasting; you have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you; for in nothing was I behind the most eminent apostles, though I am nothing.
COMMENTARY: God has to break you down 1st and break your own strength and power, so that His Power works in you.
COMMENTARY: He has given us this power so that we can conform to the image of His Son.
2.4 He Is Loving Vs. 7c
2.4 He Is Loving Vs. 7c
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
COMMENTARY: How intimately you know God determines how much you Love.
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
COMMENTARY: If you want to change, Love. If you want to walk in the True Identity, Love
11 Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your consciences.
What you love determines your actions.
19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Love is our Motivation
ILLUSTRATION: People do crazy things because of love, look at the girl who is in the abusive relationship. How people sacrifice for their addiction and how they talk about it.
2.5 He Is Disciplined Vs. 7d
2.5 He Is Disciplined Vs. 7d
Sound Mind Greek= Sophranismos; restore one to his senses.
Sōphrōn= Sozo= To keep safe and sound, to rescue from danger or destruction
Phrēn= The midriff or diaphragm, the parts of the heart, The mind the faculty of perceiving and judging.
5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
TALK ABOUT PEOPLE ARE GOING CRAZY TODAY! THEY CAN’T CONTROL THEIR THOUGHTS
ILLUSTRATION: ABOUT BIRDS FLYING OVER OUR HEADS.
2 CORINTHIANS 10:5 - We are to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
3 You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
And Paul's was an example of this...
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.
We have the ability to control what we think
2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
