2 Peter 3:1–2 NKJV
1 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:17–18 NKJV
17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

Introduction

What is a promise?

A promise is
a declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen.
Hebrews 6:16–18 NKJV
16 For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. 17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
Judges 2:10–12 NKJV
10 When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel. 11 Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; 12 and they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger.
When there was no one to remember
++Another generation arose
++They did not know God
++They did not know His work
++They embraced what they knew

What does a promise do?

A promise
++Produces Hope
Romans 4:19–21 NKJV
19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. 20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.

His faith was in the promise

A promise
Produces Hope
++Provides a Connection
Hebrews 10:19–23 NKJV
19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

Jesus is the High Priest of the Promise

A promise
Produces Hope
Provides a Connection
++Positions our Heart
Luke 6:45 NKJV
45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

The Heart is the soil of the Promise

Peter provides hope in a turbulent time

It was a time
++False prophets and teachers (2 Peter 2:1)
2 Peter 2:1 NKJV
1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
It was a time
False prophets and teachers (2 Peter 2:1)
++When truth is turned to evil (2 Peter 2:2)
2 Peter 2:2 NKJV
2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed.
The purpose of the text
++Stir up the mind
++To cause to remember

To find your voice we must remember the promise

2 Peter 3:2 NKJV
2 that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior,
The promise was
++Declared by the prophets
++Spoken by the Apostles
++Was not new to you

To find your voice we must trust God

2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:9 NLT
9 The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.
We live in an instant society
++Instant coffee
++Instant oatmeal
++Minute rice

It is never as good as the original

13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
His real work

It’s me, It’s me,

To find your voice trust what God has taught us

His promise bring capacity

Don’t get satisfied
++Seeing His grace

Don’t get satisfied
Seeing His grace
++Receive His grace
Romans 5:17 NKJV
17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
2 Corinthians 6:1 NKJV
1 We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain.

Make it count

Hebrews 11:39–40 NKJV
39 And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, 40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.

To find your voice we must grow in His Grace

2 Peter 3:18 NKJV
18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
Everything start in the inside
