I Peter 1:13-25, A Way of Life For Us

A holy person is a different person.

I Peter 1:13-16, an exhortation to set our hope in Jesus Christ.

[I Peter 1:13: Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ]. Gird up the loins of your mind: We need to do something. We need our minds to be under the control of God’s Word. Be sober: self-controlled. Hope: Depend on God’s grace moment by moment and looking for the arrival of Jesus Christ.

[I Peter 1:14: As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance]. Obedient: obedience to God’s Word; to have an obedient mind. Every day brings forth change, so we need to be in God’s Word every day. Romans 12:2: And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

[I Peter 1:15-16: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy]. Holy: be separate, apart; separate ourselves from the world. Draw nigh to God.

I Peter 1:17-22, the manifestation of holiness.

God is loving and merciful. He also disciplines.

[I Peter 1:18-19: Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot]. This is the great redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Revelation 21:21: And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.

[I Peter 1:20-21: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God]. The one who was eternal came into time to live among men.

[I Peter 1:22: Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently]. Psalm 119:9-11: Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

[I Peter 1:23-25: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you]. Our second birth is imperishable. Our first birth is perishable. God’s Word will not fail. [Psalm 119:8-9: I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly. Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word. Isaiah 40:8: The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever]. Live a holy life by girding up our mind--having an obedient mind.
