Introduction
The subject tonight is about prayer.
And in my own life, this is one of the hardest things to be consistent at.
Im not talking about uttering a few words before a meal, but spending adequate time each day conversing with the Lord.
I just heard on the radio this evening that, “a man who does not pray is saying to God, I got this, and I do not need You”.
So true!
When to pray
James 5:13-14 “Is anyone among you suffering?
Then he must pray.
Is anyone cheerful?
He is to sing praises.
Is anyone among you sick?
Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;”
Pray in times of trouble.
(suffering)
Why would we not pray when we are in trouble?
Because sometimes we are tempted to think God is uncaring or unknowing or unable to help, and so we would pray less.
The bible says the opposite is true: pray more!
Trouble is the very time to pray.
Pray in times of happiness.
(cheerful)
Do you pray more when you are in trouble or when your circumstances are good?
I pray more when I am in trouble
Sometimes good circumstances can make us complacent, and so we would pray less.
But our first response to happiness should be to praise God in prayer
Pray in times of sickness.
I think the temptation here is to run to the doctor and get some medicine.
But God says our first move should be to get on our knees and ask God to heal us.
Asa was a king in Israel.
He started off as a godly man, removed the idols from Israel and began to lead the people back to the Lord.
But as time went on he began to drift and eventually stopped trusting in God.
He became diseased in his feet, and instead of crying out to the Lord, the Scripture says he went to physicians for healing.
And as a result he ended up dying
Never forget to pray when you are sick.
How to Pray
James 5:15-16 “and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed.
The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”
Pray in faith!
Pray believing what you have asked for you shall receive.
Mark 11:24 ““Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.”
Pray according to God’s will
Pray for what Scripture teaches us
Examples?
Faith
Sanctification
Prayer brings results
It will bring healing to the sick
It will raise people up
It will bring forgiveness of sins
Principle: Prayer offered by a righteous man is effective
What is a Righteous man?
It is a man who is a doer of the word and not merely a hearer
It is the commitment of doing what is right and not compromising our faith
Confess your sins!
A righteous man confesses his sins
A righteous man has accountability
Why Pray
James 5:17-20 “Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.
Then he prayed again, and the sky poured rain and the earth produced its fruit.
My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.”
Elijah was a natural man not a superhuman
Jesus did not do many miracles in Nazareth because of their unbelief
Notice is is not Elijahs fervency, or even his frequency of prayer, but that ‘he just prayed’-- and nothing more!”
Prayer can save souls
We turn sinners with prayer
Prayer opens peoples hearts to truth.
Evangelism is without hope apart from prayer
