In Court

Jesus goes through 6 parts of trial
To Annas (John 18:13)
from Annas to Caiaphas (John 18:24)
then to Caiaphas again ( Mt 26:66) John does not record this
then to Pilate (John 18:28)
then to Herod (Luke 23:8-12)
then to Pilate again
John 18:28–40 NASB95
28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. 29 Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.” 31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death,” 32 to fulfill the word of Jesus which He spoke, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die. 33 Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” 38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in Him. 39 “But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release for you the King of the Jews?” 40 So they cried out again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.

v 28

John 18:28 (NASB95)
28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium (pre-tore-ium), and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium so that they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
This is early in the morning. They have taken Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate.
The Jews did not want to enter into the Praetorium (pre-tore-ium) because they did not want to disqualify themselves by dwelling with non-Jews because they were considered unclean.
some commentators would says that the fear of the Jews to enter into the pre-tore-ium because some believed that this location was were aborted, premature babies who died where buried in the area.
‘touching of things unclean
So they didn’t want to enter into the (pre-tore-ium) so Pilate came out to them.

v 29-30

John 18:29–30 NASB95
29 Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you.”
We are now introduced to Pilate who is the governor of Judea.
history would say that he was a weak ruler or even a push over.
We see that Pilate came to the people, not the other way around
Pilate wants to know what was the issue that they had with Jesus.
The Jews said clearly, that if Jesus was not an “evildoer” they would not have brought Him over to Him

Jesus an evildoer??!!!! no way!!!!!

The Jews were so angry with God Himself, they wanted to keep there religious status more than God, they called Jesus an evildoer.
What did the Jews say about Jesus in this trial.
they:
Accused Him of blasphemy (Mt 9:3)
keeping bad company (Mt 9:11)
accused Him of Gluttony (Mt 11:19)
Accused of Insanity (Mk 3:21)
Accused of being possessed with demons (Lu 11:15)
Just to name a few
So the Jews made false accusations against Jesus
Jesus was never a evildoer, He is God.
Jesus warns us of the same thing
Matthew 5:11 NASB95
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.

V 31

John 18:31 NASB95
31 So Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law.” The Jews said to him, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death,”
Pilate tells them to deal with this themselves. with there own authority. and there own court system.
But the Jews wanted capital punishment.
They wanted Pilate’s authority To kill Him.

v 32

John 18:32 NASB95
32 to fulfill the word of Jesus which He spoke, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.
John once again shows that Jesus is in complete control .
Jesus’ prophecy is fulfilled....Jesus will be lifted up.
Remember.....
John 3:14 NASB95
14 “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up;
Num 21:9
Numbers 21:9
9 And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the standard; and it came about, that if a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived.

Lets recap

Pilate told the jews to Kill Jesus themselves, because it was there right, (Lev 24)
but they did not want to do it because they didnt have the right to keep people to death?
but they tried to stone Jesus.
they wanted to Romans to execute Jesus death
Q. but didn’t they try to kill Jesus?
John 8:59 (stone in temple), John 10:31 (stone), Luke 4:29 (throw off hill), John 5:18 (try to kill,)
The Jew executed but stoning
The Greeks executed with the cross - to left up
If they went and killed Jesus they would not have crucified Him because the Romans had exclusive control over who crucifies.
they would ave stoned Him according to the law of Moses.
If they would have stoned Jesus, Jesus would not be lifted up.
The Jews requested Jesus be lifted up.
THE JEWS were never in the way of God’s control
God’s glory still shines through

v 33-35

John 18:33–35 NASB95
33 Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?”
Notice that the Jews did not enter into the Praetorium,
Pilate returned intro the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus to enter into the Praetorium.
The Jews would not enter there because it would make them unclean. But Jesus enters into the Praetorium
they didn’t want to be in a location where they believe death is,
‘but they want Jesus killed.
those outside of Christ will always present themselves as foolish
So the next interrogation begins.
Pilate ask Jesus if He was the king of the Jews. (This is recorded in all 4 of the gospels.)
Jesus answers in a interesting way , He ask Pilate if he is asking because of his own knowledge or because of what others say.
Jesus is seeing here if Pilate has understanding or if He is just hearing the accusations.
Pilate expresses that He is not a Jew, and seemingly does not know what is going on, nor has any concern in what’s going on.
Pilate wants to know what Jesus did, because His own nation, His own people have delivered Him to Pilate
What did Jesus do to have His own people turn Him in as a criminal wanting death?

Kingdom and Nation

Pilate says that Jesus’ nation has delivered Him
Jesus says His kingdom is not of this world.
Jesus talks about his kingdom, His sovereign rule, His kingly activity
Jesus kingdom is not of this world, it’s greater than.

v 36

John 18:36 NASB95
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.”
Jesus explains that if His kingdom was of this world, there is no way that He would have been handed over.
This world is still of sin, and this Nation still hates Him.
But what is sure and is is the Kingdom of heaven.
Jesus’ kingdom, is God eternal and sovereign rule, power.
although the world is not the Kingdom of Heaven, God’s glory and sovereignty will reign over it
Sheet and light illustration
God’s glory will and must shine through

v.37

John 18:37 NASB95
37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
Pilate confirms that Jesus is indeed a king. I mean Jesus talks of His kingdom.
Some would suggest that Pilate is asking this with a note of irony.
This irony can be related to:
1 Kings 18:27 NASB95
27 It came about at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god; either he is occupied or gone aside, or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened.”
We know that Elijah believed in the Lord, and did not, in no way believe in in the prophets of Baal
its almost a mockery.
Jesus does not deny this facts.
μαρτυρέω mar-tie-ery-a) to give testimony, to testify of the Truth.
This is Jesus’ reason for being born,
Jesus is here to save us. to die for us.
‘to give us Himself which is truth
John 18:38–40 NASB95
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in Him. 39 “But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release for you the King of the Jews?” 40 So they cried out again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas.” Now Barabbas was a robber.

What is truth?

the truth will set you free……
what is truth? It’s Christ, Jesus the Messiah
he is truth
Pilate tried to work with this crowd
he would release a criminal back to the people
They wanted Barabbas
Barabbas is a notorious criminal. (Acts 3:14)
meaning son of abba (father)
The Jews wanted son of father (human) and not the Son of the Father/ Son of God (heaven)
