I have titled my message: KNOW THE TRUTH - IT WILL SET YOU FREE
LAST WEEK:
ONE WAY JESUS
We are a Hospital, we are a Family and we are in an Army
Our focus is Jesus, not on a PLAN B
LETS PRAY
Father we love you and thank you for who you are, we ask that you speak to us day through your word, we open our hearts and lives, praying that you have your way in us. Bless your people today in Jesus name Amen.
We are going to be looking at the scripture: Know the truth and it will set you free.
John 8:31–36 NKJV
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
POINT 1
WE ARE TO ABIDE IN HIS WORD
It is important for us to read the word of God daily (Reading plan / Word for the Day) make time.
Romans 12:2 NKJV
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Matthew 4:4 NKJV
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
We need to be actively reading and studying the word of God.
John 1:1 NKJV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Paul tells us that the renewing of the mind, involves a taking off and a putting on.
Take off the old self and put on the new self.
Let go of our cultural perspective and put on a biblical perspective.
Take off lies and replace them with truth.
Let go of what we learned growing up and put on what we learned in the Bible.
Paul goes into more detail in Ephesians 4:22-24:
Ephesians 4:22–24 NKJV
22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
So we’re not just reading the Bible–we’re taking everything we’ve learned in the Bible, talking it all over with God, and actively trying to look at life through His eyes.
We need to have knowledge of the Word, Holy Spirit brings back to rememberance.
We need a willingness–and a desire–to change.
And we need time with God as He is the One who renews our minds through His word.
POINT 2
WE NEED TO BE HIS DISCIPLES
John 8:31 NKJV
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.
To be a disciple we need to:
Remain in His word
Abide / relationship with God. We need to know Him and yeild our lives to Him.
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
John 6:60–68 NKJV
60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” 61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.” 66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” 68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
Matthew 28:19–20 NKJV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
These two verses make it clear what we should do as disciples.
That we should go out and spread the Gospel, baptize, and teach.
Jesus tells his disciples that he is always with them.
John 21:17 NKJV
17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep.
To be a disciple, we need to be a sheep feeder.
Matthew 4:19 NKJV
19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
This is where Jesus first meets Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew who were both fishermen.
At this point, they didn’t know Jesus but He tells them if they follow him they will fish for people.
Jesus said,”Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
John 8:12 NKJV
12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
John 12:26 NKJV
26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
This is such a powerful verse and a great verse!
Those of us who will follow Jesus and minister to him by following his teachings will then be considered worthy in the eyes of God.
In turn, He will honour us.
POINT 3
KNOW THE TRUTH AND IT WILL SET YOU FREE
John 8:33–34 NKJV
33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.
Own it - “YOU LYING FERRET”
Know it
Walk in the truth
Mark 8:34–38 NKJV
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
His word is the same yesturday today and forever
Hebrews 13:8 NKJV
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Malachi 3:6 NKJV
6 “For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.
