Introduction

who wrote it: Paul
A letter from the Apostle Paul to the church at Philippi, in Macedonia (northern Greece). Philippians is one of four so-called Prison Letters attributed to Paul, but it does not share many similarities with the other three (Colossians, Ephesians, and Philemon).
Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian Polycarp (wrote letter to church in AD 135 referencing Paul)
why did he write it:
letter of thanks and for correction
Philippians 4:16–19 ESV
Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit. I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
who do he write it to: Philippians
Hence the title (HAHA)
when did he write it:
second missionary journey
prison letter
range from 50 AD - 64 AD
BKC “His reference to the palace guard (Phil. 1:13) as well as his concern about facing possible death (vv. 20–26) argue for his writing from Rome.”
Need to know info:
City of Philippi: This is not the typical town
Large port city but not enough Jews for a synagogue (Burge and Green)
Church of Philippi Acts 16
Macedonian Call (Acts 16: 6-10)
problems with the church:
Judaizers (Philippians 3:1-3: “Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you. Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh”)
rivalry (Philippians 2:3-4: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”)
God had something big for this city…their is great faithfulness here (Philippians 1:4 “always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy,” )
Paul spends his time commending that
