Compare Greek culture to ours
Compare Greek culture to ours
They valued thought and reason; today we value education.
They worshipped pleasure; our culture worships the same.
They held justice in high esteem; today, we do the same.
They thought they were better than other nations; our culture often communicates the same.
They were religious; we are inundated with religion.
They thought they had everything figured out; but they didn’t.
Redeem the Time
Redeem the Time
16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
Paul couldn’t wait around. He had to help these people!
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Never forget that this world faces judgment. Each individual faces judgment. Redeem the time.
5 Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
A well-seasoned dish is palatable and attractive.
To you God has given this day. Your decision is what will be done with it.
Understand the Issues
Understand the Issues
Paul understood what it was that was wrong with Greek culture. It was not their beautiful architecture. It was not their penchant for fancy food. It was not their distraction with philosophy and reasoning. Their biggest issue was their lack of understanding the God of the Bible.
22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
Preach the Gospel
Preach the Gospel
Just as Paul reaches the climax of his address and begins to share the resurrection of Christ, he is cut off. But one thing is certain.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
The Gospel will always bear fruit
The Gospel will always bear fruit
33 So Paul departed from among them. 34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
10 For as the rain cometh down, And the snow from heaven, And returneth not thither, But watereth the earth, And maketh it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: It shall not return unto me void, But it shall accomplish that which I please, And it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
God’s Word is a good seed that will bear fruit when it falls upon good ground. Keep sowing, and God will bring firth the increase.
6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
