I Will Give You Rest(Matthew 11: 28-30)

Context

John Baptist sends followers to ask if Jesus is Messiah

Jesus sends followers back and asks them to judge based on works he’s done

Jesus talks about the cities that have rejected him & the doom that awaits them

For those who trust in Jesus, Rest will be given

Verse 28

What is rest?

Rest- a time of peace and calm, Free from Work

Heavy burdens- difficult duty, requiring effort/work

What are common heavy burdens we feel on a daily basis?

Work can be physical/spiritual

For sinners, what is our heavy burden for salvation?

Law of God ultimate standards of righteousness/standard for eternal life

Law of God- key element of God’s covenant with Israel and how they should live

Can never meet The Laws standard of righteousness

Law brought death rather than life

Romans 7:9–10 CSB

Once I was alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life again and I died. The commandment that was meant for life resulted in death for me.

Law itself isn’t evil, but we are

Reason why law brought death

Romans 7:11–12 CSB

For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me. So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and just and good.

We have no hope because we can’t reach God’s standard?

God knew we could never be perfect,

Took our place and fulfill the entire law to make a new way for righteousness

How did he(God) do this? Jesus

Jesus lived out all laws of God

Freed us from chains of Law/”slaves to law/sin”

Salvation no longer about our performance, but now through faith that Jesus fulfilled all laws and now made perfect through him

Romans 8:3–4 CSB

For what the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering, in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Conclude

Jesus promises rest

Rest from Law of God

Law brought us death due to sinful nature

Jesus satisfied Law of God and make a new way for righteousness

What is a heavy burden that you carry when it comes to your salvation?
