Intro

For the next couple weeks, we are going to be learning about the birth of Jesus!
But, before we get to the birth of Jesus, we have to go about 700 years back.
We will be learning about two Old Testament prophets today! Who knows what a prophet is?
A prophet is a person who God chose to tell both the future and how to live for Him in the present.
So God would reveal to a prophet what was to come and how they should live, and the prophet would then deliver the message to God’s people.
We will be looking at two prophets who told about the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ!

Isaiah

The first prophet that we are learning about today was Isaiah.
Three times, Isaiah prophesied the coming of Jesus. He wrote these words on a scroll long ago that we now read in our Bibles.
#1:
Isaiah 7:14 (CSB)
14 Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.
#2:
Isaiah 9:6 (CSB)
6 For a child will be born for us,
a son will be given to us,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
He will be named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
#3:
Isaiah 11:1–5 (CSB)
1 Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
a Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
a Spirit of counsel and strength,
a Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
3 His delight will be in the fear of the Lord.
He will not judge
by what he sees with his eyes,
he will not execute justice
by what he hears with his ears,
4 but he will judge the poor righteously
and execute justice for the oppressed of the land.
He will strike the land
with a scepter from his mouth,
and he will kill the wicked
with a command from his lips.
5 Righteousness will be a belt around his hips;
faithfulness will be a belt around his waist.
-
So God told Isaiah that there would be a baby boy would be born, and He would be called Immanuel, which means “God with us.”
We see that Jesus has many different names! Immanuel, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Micah

Now lets see what our second prophet had to say about Jesus. His name was Micah.
-
Micah 5:2 (CSB)
2 Bethlehem Ephrathah,
you are small among the clans of Judah;
one will come from you
to be ruler over Israel for me.
His origin is from antiquity,
from ancient times.
-
Isn’t it awesome to see how God had a plan to send our Savior Jesus since the beginning of time, but Jesus himself has always existed! He has always been in heaven with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.

Bottom Line:

So, what can we learn from this?
Prophets told that God would send the Savior.
God used prophets to let people know that one day a Savior would come.
Why do we need a Savior?
(Gospel Presentation)
This entire month of December we are learning about our perfect Savior, Jesus Christ. Because of Jesus’ birth, and because of His death on the cross, and because of His resurrection, you and I can be forgiven of our sins and be made right with God!
This is the good news. This is the Gospel. We should never forget it.
