Romans 5:5-11
Romans 5:5-11
5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
What are disappointments that you’ve overcome recently?
How does God speaking through the Holy Spirit manifest in your life?
6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
God had a plan immediately when Adam sinned
But he had to wait till the right timing
4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.
Jesus timing was perfect and planned
1. Alexander the great conquered much of conquered much of the east, from Greece and Macedonia to Asia Minor and all the way to India
He brought much of the greek culture and language with him
Most everyone in the empire spoke greek so it missions work easier
2. This was a time of peace and security within the Roman empire, Jews were good to practice their religion as long as they payed taxes and obey the law
21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.”
And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
To the government and God
Now there’s no God in peoples lives so people created religion
What in society do you see people making a religion
So God’s timing is perfect
Timing issue: Question God’s promises rather than our character
6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
What is the difference in your strength before Jesus and now with Him?
7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
-While we were yet sinners Christ died for us
-The goodness of God leads men to repentance
Where have you shown love when you would have rather settled for justice?
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.
We’re saved from our way of doing things and what we want to doing his will
10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
How does that change the way you view people you didn’t like before?
Reconciled: The exchange of hostility for a friendly relationship
Hostility: At war or in opposition to God
We get reconciled when we finally surrender
What does true surrender look like?
There’s a joy of surrender?
That word life is zoe
-The God kind of life
-a physical sense of life here
-a Transcendent life
Transcendent:
Surpassing others; preeminent or supreme.
Lying beyond the ordinary range of perception.
What are do you see yourself as transcendent?
11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
