Joseph’s Journey

Joseph was a SON (& HEIR) of David.
Joseph was PASSIONATE about the LIBERATION of Israel.
Mark 6:3 NIV
Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
Matthew 1:19 NIV
Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
Joseph was RIGHTEOUSLY COMPASSIONATE.
1 Maccabees 2:23–24 NRSV
When he had finished speaking these words, a Jew came forward in the sight of all to offer sacrifice on the altar in Modein, according to the king’s command. When Mattathias saw it, he burned with zeal and his heart was stirred. He gave vent to righteous anger; he ran and killed him on the altar.

Joseph’s Calling

Matthew 1:20 NIV
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Marry a woman who is ALREADY PREGNANT.
Make her son HIS HEIR.
Matthew 1:21 NIV
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
Raise a messiah who would save Israel from SIN, not THE ROMANS.
1 Maccabees 2:49–50 NRSV
Now the days drew near for Mattathias to die, and he said to his sons: “Arrogance and scorn have now become strong; it is a time of ruin and furious anger. Now, my children, show zeal for the law, and give your lives for the covenant of our ancestors.
1 Maccabees 2:65–68 NRSV
“Here is your brother Simeon who, I know, is wise in counsel; always listen to him; he shall be your father. Judas Maccabeus has been a mighty warrior from his youth; he shall command the army for you and fight the battle against the peoples. You shall rally around you all who observe the law, and avenge the wrong done to your people. Pay back the Gentiles in full, and obey the commands of the law.”
Mark 6:3 NIV
Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
DIE before seeing any of it CAME TO PASS.

Joseph’s Decision

Matthew 1:24–25 NIV
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
Joseph humbly accepted a SUPPORTING role in God’s plan.
Joseph trusted in a plan that didn’t match his EXPECTATIONS.
Joseph recognized and embraced God’s RIGHTEOUS COMPASSION.
Micah 6:8 NIV
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Zechariah 7:9 NIV
“This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.
Isaiah 1:17 NIV
Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

The Road to Christmas

Like Joseph, we are offered a SUPPORTING role in God’s plan.
Like Joseph, we are asked to trust a plan that is DIFFERENT from OUR OWN.
Our role is to share God’s RIGHTEOUS COMPASSION with the world.
