Purpose of Book

The purpose of Ezekiel is Yahweh rebukes His people for their sinfulness and He promises to restore His glory so all nations will know He is the one true Lord. In short, the purpose of Ezekiel is the glory of God.

Ezekiel 9:1-2 - Executioners Gathered

Exegesis

1 Then he cried in my ears with a loud voice, saying, “Bring near the executioners of the city, each with his destroying weapon in his hand.”

God is the one who cries out in Ezekiel’s ears while in the temple
In Ezekiel 8 Ezekiel sees everything. Here in Ezekiel 9 Ezekiel hears most of the vision
The vision is a continuation of 8 and is one of judgment
Yahweh commands the executioners (guards/officials) of the city to come forward
In their hands was a destroying weapon

2 And behold, six men came from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with his weapon for slaughter in his hand, and with them was a man clothed in linen, with a writing case at his waist.

Six angelic men appear from the north
These heavenly hosts will do what the elders/priests failed to do - keep the temple holy
The Israelites are no longer on God’s side
Exodus 12:23 ESV
23 For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.
2 Kings 19:35 ESV
35 And that night the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.
A seventh man appears who is clothed in linen as a priest (Exodus 28:29-42) or an angel (Daniel 10:5, 12:6)

And they went in and stood beside the bronze altar.

The heavenly hosts stand next to the bronze alter which was in the middle of the outer courtyard

The Conscience

1 Corinthians 11:27–32 ESV
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.

Application

Hebrews 12:10–11 ESV
10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. 11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Revelation 22:3–5 ESV
3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

Ezekiel 9:3-11 - Divine Vengeance

Exegesis

3 Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub on which it rested to the threshold of the house.

The presence of God is preparing to leave the temple and the city
Ezekiel would have understood this as ominous
Yahweh has ceased ruling and He may leave
Notice who the true ruler of Israel is: Not Asherah or Tammuz or the elders - It is Yahweh

And he called to the man clothed in linen, who had the writing case at his waist.

The seventh man is called forward for a special mission

4 And the Lord said to him, “Pass through the city, through Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it.”

The seventh man’s responsibility becomes clear - mark those who are true followers of God because they see the abominations not from man’s perspective, but from God’s perspective
God does NOT kill the righteous along with the wicked
Noah and His family
Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot’s family
Passover
Rahab
The mark provided hope to those who have been faithful to Yahweh
The mark also signified those who belonged to God

5 And to the others he said in my hearing, “Pass through the city after him, and strike. Your eye shall not spare, and you shall show no pity. 6 Kill old men outright, young men and maidens, little children and women, but touch no one on whom is the mark. And begin at my sanctuary.”

After the marks have been made the other six men kill those who are wicked
Every person who is not marked will be killed, EVERY ONE
The one’s with the mark are spared from being slain

So they began with the elders who were before the house.

The killing begins with the elders who led the nation into apostasy
Though there is hope for those with the mark, those without the mark have a hopeless ending

7 Then he said to them, “Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain. Go out.” So they went out and struck in the city.

What is horrific from Ezekiel’s standpoint is God’s command to defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain!

8 And while they were striking, and I was left alone, I fell upon my face, and cried, “Ah, Lord God! Will you destroy all the remnant of Israel in the outpouring of your wrath on Jerusalem?”

Ezekiel is overwhelmed with compassion for the entire land

9 Then he said to me, “The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great. The land is full of blood, and the city full of injustice. For they say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see.’ 10 As for me, my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity; I will bring their deeds upon their heads.”

God’s response to Ezekiel speaks to those committing abominations, not those who have the mark on them

11 And behold, the man clothed in linen, with the writing case at his waist, brought back word, saying, “I have done as you commanded me.”

The Conscience

Romans 1:18–23 ESV
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

Application

1 Timothy 2:3–6 ESV
3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
John 3:16–21 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
John 16:7–11 ESV
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

Christ Connection

Romans 3:21–25 ESV
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
