The Word WAS God …

John 1:1 NLT

1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

What is John teaching?

· The DEITY of Jesus:

o “and the Word was with God” (“with” indicates there was more than one person).

o “and the Word was God.”

Word = 3056 λόγος [logos /log·os/]

· Living voice, reckoning, divine reason

· the personal wisdom and power in union with God, to minister in creation and govern the universe,[1]

Jesus Shares the Same UNITY as God

Jesus continually equated Himself with the Father.

John 10:30 NLT

30 The Father and I are one.”

People are to honor the Son just as they honor the Father.

Jesus Shares the Same HONOR as God

John 5:23 NLT

23 so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.

44 Jesus shouted to the crowds, “If you trust me, you are trusting not only me, but also God who sent me.

Jesus’ work is described by His titles

Jesus and the Father shared titles and or descriptions of their work.

Creator, First and Last, I Am, Judge, Light, Savior, Shepherd, Lord

Jesus Shares the Same WELCOME as God

John 13:20 NLT

20 I tell you the truth, anyone who welcomes my messenger is welcoming me, and anyone who welcomes me is welcoming the Father who sent me.”

When people welcome you - they welcome Christ

· Or else shake dust off

Same Hatred

John 15:23 NLT

23 Anyone who hates me also hates my Father.

Jesus Shares the Same WORSHIP as God

· Only God is to be worshipped (Matthew 4:10).

Matthew 4:10 NLT

10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”

Angels refuse to be worshipped

Revelation 19:10; 22:8-9)

· Deception comes from placing too much emphasis or attention on angels.

Men of God refuse to be worshipped

(Acts 10:25-26; 14:11-18)

Jesus never refused to be worshipped

· The WISE MEN worshipped Jesus when they SAW Him (Matthew 2:2, 11)

Matthew 2:11 NLT

11 They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Jesus was worshipped by MANY

· A leper worshipped Jesus when he was CLEANSED by Him (Matthew 8:2)

· A Synagogue Official worshipped Jesus when his daughter was RESURRECTED by Him. (Matthew 9:18)

· The Canaanite woman worshipped Jesus when her daughter was DELIVERED by Him. (Matthew 15:22)

· The mother of James and John worshipped Jesus when she ASKED a favor of Him. (Matthew 20:20)

· His own disciples worshipped Jesus when after the resurrection

o The WOMEN worshipped Jesus on His RESURRECTION (Matthew 28:9; 17)

o His DISCIPLES worshipped Jesus during the ASCENSION (Luke 24:52)

· Jesus is worshipped by the ANGELS in heaven (Hebrews 1:6)

· Jesus is worshipped by the CITIZENS in HEAVEN (Revelation 5:8-14; 7:9-10)

Jesus will be worshipped by EVERYONE, everywhere

Philippians 2:10–11 NLT

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
