10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength.
11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil.
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.
13 For this reason take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand.
14 Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest,
15 and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace.
16 In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God.
18 Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.
19 Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel.
20 For this I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough to speak about it as I should.
Introduction: Spiritual Warfare
There is a spiritual world. Sometimes we tend to go too far on either side of the spectrum but the reality is that there is a spiritual world that we must be aware of.
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens.
THE BATTLE
TWO SPIRITUAL KINGDOMS
Throughout the Scriptures we see that there are two spiritual kingdoms mentioned.
The Kingdom of God (light/heaven)
The Kingdom of Darkness
Kingdom of Darkness
1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins
2 in which you previously walked according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient.
Satan is described as the “god of this world/order”. This means that he has a major influence on the world but remember that God is still sovereign.
4 In their case, the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Kingdom of Light (Jesus Kingdom)
33 Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered, “Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about me?”
35 “I’m not a Jew, am I?” Pilate replied. “Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”
36 “My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus. “If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”
Believers have been called out of darkness
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
The Kingdom of Darkness will not win (but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a fight)
17 Jesus responded, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven.
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
THE FIGHT
10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength.
11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil.
The fight is a spiritual one and it is against the schemes of the enemy.
3 Then the tempter approached him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple,
6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will give his angels orders concerning you, and they will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”
7 Jesus told him, “It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God.”
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
9 And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus told him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.”
The enemy’s schemes/deceptions involve but are not limited to
challenging God’s Word (garden)
attacking your character
making himself seem bigger than he is (the devil didn’t make you do it)
ALL LIES-and this is where the enemy often attack us, in our thinking/mind (spiritual warfare isn’t like the exorcist)
3 For although we live in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh,
4 since the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish arguments
5 and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.
This is where we must fight. It is a spiritual fight that must be fought in the spirit.
(imagine Paul penning this chained to a Romans solider while he himself is a bond with invisible chains to the Lord as His soldier)
in the vastness of the Lord’s strength
10 Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength.
Our strength and ability is limited and aint enough for this battle
in the full armour of God
belt of truth
breastplate of righteousness
sandals with the gospel of peace
shield of faith
helmet of salvation
sword-the Word of God
prayer
TAKE A STAND (our posture) )walk vs. stand
14 Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest,
Not running to, not running away, but firmly planted
1 How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers!
2 Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.
We fight the lies with the truth
