Review & Overview
1.
Previous Study’s Review
Back in Chp.7:1: Paul said, now concerning the things of which you wrote to me… so the church had several questions for Paul and Paul is answering those questions…
Now in chp.12, 13 & 14 Paul deals with the 5th question from the Corinthians regarding the Spiritual Realm & The Manifestations of the Holy Spirit…
We looked at the fact that Paul does not want us to be ignorant regarding the spiritual realm Vs. 1.
And he didn’t want us to be Ignorant specifically:
Concerning The Evil in the Spiritual Realm Vs. 2
Concerning The Testing in the Spiritual Realm Vs. 3
Now, more recently, in Vs. 4-11 we looked at the source of the Manifestations of the Holy Spirit.
The Gifts come from Holy Spirit
The Ministries come from Jesus
And the activities come from the Father.
And then Paul gave us a list of the various manifestations in Vs. 8-10:
Wisdom
Knowledge
Faith
Healings
Miracles
Prophecy
Discerning of Spirits
Different Kinds of Tongues
Interpretation of Tongues
2. Current Study’s Overview
And that brings us to our study for today, look at Vs. 12. Read...
Now in vs.12-31 Paul deals with: Unity as it pertains to the Manifestations of the Holy Spirit…
Paul proves that Unity & Diversity are not exclusive terms… he does so by using the illustration of the Body.
Body: soma, used 18 times in these next 20 versed…
It can be used literally speaking of our Bodies Physically… or figuratively speaking of the Church Spiritually…
If your taking notes there are 10 things we note about us & the Manifestations of the Holy Spirit:
1. We’re all One Vs. 12
Our physical bodies are made up of many members, there is great diversity… but there’s only one body…
So also is Christ… Just as Jesus had one physical body He now has one spiritual body, the Church…
Explain the Corporate Church.
You and I are the different members of this one body, the church… which Jesus is the head,
APPLICATION: You know it doesn’t matter what name we have on our buildings or what types of clothing we wear or what type of music we have…
We are all part of the same body… the body of Christ… the Church…
So there should unity…
2.
We’re all Baptized Vs. 13
The Bible talks about several different types of Baptisms:
1 Cor.10:2
Baptism of Moses: as Moses delivered Israel, they were identifying with Moses.
Matt.20:22
Baptism of Suffering: as Jesus was speaking about the cross…
Acts 2:38 Baptism of Water: as were we are identifying with Jesus…
Here: We have the Baptism with the Holy Spirit: this speaks of Salvation… which is a work of the Spirit, vs.3.
According to Luke 3:16 Jesus Christ will Baptize everyone… believer… & non-believer alike…
Believers will be baptized with the Holy Spirit ushering us into the Body of Christ at salvation…
3. We’re all Important Vs. 14-17
The problem in Corinth is the same problem many have today… we don’t think we’re important…
We think the gift the H.S. has given us isn’t really needed so we don’t get involved… we don’t serve…
We think, I’m just a foot, I’m always in the dark… smelly bad… my toes look like they’re throwing up gang signs… what good am I.
APPLICATION: Every part of the Body is very important… I remember breaking my ankle tough…
4.
We’re all in God’s Will Vs. 18
Look back it vs.11…
So Holy Spirit gives us the gifts as He wills & God puts us in the Body as He wills…
APPLICATION: So if we’re not satisfied or content with our gift or our place in the Body of Christ we’re saying…
God, You messed up… God, you don’t know what You’re doing… We are questioning God…
4.
We’re all in God’s Will Vs. 18
APPLICATION: When we’re ok with what God has given us… & where God has put us… a couple of things will happen…
Things will naturally flow from us… our service to the Lord will be joy… no sweat… no toil…
It will be something we want to do… not something we feel we have to do…
And it will bring Unity to the body… because we’re functioning as the part we’re suppose to be…
ILLUSTRATION: Orchestra is led by a conductor - Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion,
5.
We’re all Interdependent Vs. 19-21
So we are all interdependent upon each other… but when we forget this, 2 things can happen:
1.
We think: they don’t need me… I’m of no use… I have nothing to offer…
so we don’t do anything… & we might even start to stay away from church…
2.
We think: I don’t need them… I’m ok on my own… I don’t need any help from others…
and that’s what can cause division in the body of Christ…
6. We’re all Necessary Vs. 22-24
We’re all necessary & we’re all important… just like our physical body, we don’t see our internal organs.
ILLUSTRATION: The heart, it’s small, we never see it, but it’s sooooo important!
So we all understand how necessary & important they are… even though they are vitally important we don’t pay much attention to them… in fact we rarely think about them…
APPLICATION: The same is true in the Body of Christ, the church… you might not be seen by others…
you might not have a very visible part in the church… but from God you Greater Honor…
Now, here in the beginning of Vs. 24 Paul says, our presentable parts have no need?
No need of honor.
That is because if you look at our presentable parts like the mouth, lips, eyes, they are always seen and are given honor.
The mouth we would say the preacher, the mouth of the body of Christ, is always given honor.
ILLUSTRATION: Ronnie’s Worldly wedding, people honored me and respected me.
So humbling.
So there is no need to give those parts of the body honor, since they already get that all the time.
7. We’re all United Vs.
25-27
We all understand this illustration as it pertains to our physical body…
Because when one part of our body suffers or is injured the whole body suffers…
ILLUSTRATION: Even to the smallest things like a Paper cut, or is that just me?
But seriously, it seems as though one part of our body will always effect another part of our body… because we are all connected and united…
APPLICATION: What a parallel to the church… because we too are all united… we’re all connected spiritually…
And when a brother or sister in the Lord is hurting our hearts hurt for them…
When there is drama and division in the body it effects the whole body.
& when the Lord blesses them & uses them… we rejoice with them…
APPLICATION: Now, also I’d like to point out this fact.
There are those who say, well im hurting or I went through a hard time and no one was there for me?
No one was hurting with me...
So the church is not good.
Now there is a reason this idea of Unity in the Body of Christ is so important…
John 17:21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me…
8.
We’re all Appointed Vs. 28
I do not believe this is meant to be a complete list of gifts or offices… Paul is simply making a point…
That we are all appointed by God to do something as it pertains to the Body of Christ…
