Do you need a second chance? | Jonah 3
Father, took you for your grace, thank you for the opportunity to be together. Once again, as we study aware now that you teach our hearts and help us to be more like you in Jesus name. We pray. Amen. Jonah Jonah. Jonah, Jonah. Jonah, do Jonah running away from God and chapter one, God calls Jonah. Hey, Joe, I got a mission for you. Go do it. But Jonah went the other way. So then it was about five hundred miles away, but Jonah decided to go to Tarsus, which is 2000 miles away.
But one of us we like to take the long route, But in the end was going to happen, we're going to have to turn back anyway. So instead of going 500 Miles and Miles 2,000 miles, even though God gave him a ride in chapter 2, Amanda fish. Ball. Middle name of shore. Then he still had to go to Nineveh Jonah face the problem because of his Disobedience to God. And in Chapter 2, Jonah repented and Jonah prayed to God. And now in chapter 3, we will see Jonah is repentance into action and see how God is going to use a man who is submitted to him. Jonah 3:1. So let's read. It says, The title of a message. This morning is second shins. Do you need a second chance? Do you need a second chance? Do you need a second chance? Do you need a second chance? So Jonah 3:1
It says then the word of the Lord came to Jonah. The second I'm saying, arise go to Nineveh the great City and call out against the message that I tell you. So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly. Great City, three days journey in breath. So the word of the Lord. Now the second time came to Jonah, how many times the word of God has come to you? How many times does God's word has come to your engagement? I want you to do this to me. And then we disobey See, when you look at chapter 1 and chapter 3, it's the parallel scripture. So if you go with chapter 11 verse 1, if you flip your pages, or tap your device, inverse one, it says the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of an Italian and second verse in chapter, when it says go to the city of Nineveh and preach against it because its wickedness has come up on before me. The new verse 3. What does it say? Said with me, those of you who have your Bible but Jonah ran Always KU win away from the Lord to flee to tarshis. But now look at Moore's, 30 Rose to Nineveh. You see when God gives you a second chance you need to take it when God give you a second chance, it's your opportunity to make things right. And all of us here at some point in our lives of receive Second. Chances from God. for some of us, it starts since fortunes 1516 100 skins. But when God gives us a second chance, it's our opportunity to turn back to him. You see, God never gives up on us and you see their God didn't give up on Jonah, Jonah, a preacher, we should know better. God called him to do it work, but he refused and now, but but here's the thing. Now second chances are good, but they are consequences to Second Chances, right? When Joe, and I didn't hear the first time. What happened to him? You got swallowed by big fish do enjoy being inside the belly of a fish for three days and three nights. He was in distress. See now you really turn to God to pray R6 there are consequences when we don't listen to God the first time but when God gives us a second chance we need to jump on that. We need to jump on that second chance and let God use a census arise go to Nineveh that great City. Call out against the message that I tell you you can God never gives up on people. Neverland God didn't give up on Jonah but God would not give up on the ninevites either. And remember the ninevites were a wicked City. They were Wicked people, they committed, great atrocities. But still God. Love them. See, that's the thing about God. God always pursues us. God is the one who pursues us all the time. And finally now Joe and I came to his senses and Jonah arose and went to Nineveh. How many of you would not? Listen after God, got you swallowed by a fish?
If you don't listen at that boy, you got some problems.
Like, when I used to teach my students would tell me you got issues.
After you've been swallowed by Big Fish and God takes you to some terrible and horrible circumstances. And you still look repent. Something is wrong with you. But Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord. And I don't exactly like God wants to do some of us in half-way-tree repaired, but God tells us to do it half way we do it out on the way, but it says you're doing that when I went to live, according to the word of the Lords of Jonah. Follow the straight path down in the city, three days journey in breath.
I had to do a lot of walking. What's the three days journey but now Jonah was committed. Jonah was not committed at first, but now, Jonah is totally committed to guide our first lesson this morning. First lesson, God is in the business of restoring Sinners and giving them an opportunity to serve again. Once they have truly repented of their sins and begin to obey, no matter the cost. That makes sense. That's Jonah story. See, I'll say it again. God is in the business of restoring Sinners restoring people and giving them an opportunity to serve again. Once they have done. What, Stay with me when they have truly repented. See, I think that's the part often that we miss. We want God to use us again but we have not truly repented, see Jonah, truly repented because now Joe took some actions, took some steps to do, the right thing and obey, God and didn't cuss Jonah. Something that city was a big city, it says that the city was a three days journey. So Jonah had said, you wanted to go for the entire city. Jonah had to work three days. Some commentators, tell this lady, that's about like 60 Mi. So I had to do it going 20 miles every day. Just walking around the city and sharing the message of God with them. You see? Not only, we have to repent but we also have to obey God and pay the price for whatever God calls us to do that. Interesting again that God allows Jonah to pick up right? Where Right where he left off.
God. It's it's kind of like Jonah is The Prodigal Son of the Old Testament. When the prodigal son in the New Testament was coming back to his father. What did God? What did the father do? Pull up his robe and ran to meet that. Prodigal Son. Seems the same thing here, Jonah's The Prodigal Son in the Old Testament, now, where God just get them, he's ready to go. And then God says, all right, let's go go do what I told you to do. Not like, I'll sit down for a while but got that go. The funny thing also did not drop Jonah to Nineveh. But instead, the fish drop Jonah at his place of disobedience. The first job Jonah at his place of Disobedience so that Jonah now has an opportunity to make the right decision this time. And they do not pass the test. He did because at the end of the first three, it says so Jonah arose and went. And then of a, according to the word of the Lord, according to the word of the Lord. So now you see us going to take you to the place. He's going to take you back to the place of Disobedience where you disobeyed him, and he's going to give you an opportunity now, to make the choice to last time, you might have failed. But God will take you back and then you say, okay, I got to make a decision now. I thought the Bible says, choose this day whom you will serve.
See. Now it needs to be a reminder for us when to remember where we have disobeyed God. That's me like a nice person in our life, okay? If our tendency is to steal God is not just going to take that away from us that we don't feel like that we have to steal it but God is going to put us in an opportunity where we have to make a choice. Are we still going to steal, or are we going to turn away and make the right choice? So whatever our tendency is, whatever the problem that we Face God's going to put us in a position to make a choice. We're going to feel like that or are we going to raise above that? Because remember in 1st Corinthians 10:13. God says that no temptation has overtaken us, that is not where's my Wednesday night crowd. That is not common to man for the Rico's really figuring it out. That is not coming to man, but God is able to go to God will God is faithful. He will provide a way of Escape for us, so that we are able to stand up on their God, will provide an opportunity of Escape. So the question is, are we going to take that opportunity of Escape or are we going to fall again? See, God will take us back to the place of this obedience where we have this baby him so that we have an opportunity to make the right choice. See, a lot of us asked for Second Chances, but we are not willing to change. Some of us wants a second chance, but we still want to keep our agenda, but God says a, it doesn't work that way. Verse for Joe, and I began to get to go into the city going a Day's Journey and he called out yet, forty days. And then if I shall be overthrown,
Why do message in 40 days and none of us shall be overthrown. Give somebody a message that you don't want them to receive and he's just waiting for them to fail. I've ever done that in your siblings. I'm not going to say Max in here when your parents tell you, go tell your siblings something. But you don't tell it's like fully. Like, you know what? The consequences might be? That I'll do it, but it's just cuz you just waiting for them to get in trouble. But like I was here, Jonah. The entire message was yet forty days and then if I shall be overthrown, that was his message.
And the people of the men of ability to God, they called for a fast and put on sackcloth of for the from the greatest. To the least of them. You see, even with bad messaging. Guys world still Rings. True. Even with bad messaging, God's word is still effective.
Jonah did not say much. Just wondering what's going to happen in 40 days.
That's it. Did you see even with Jonah's bad messaging, God's word was still effective because the people of Nineveh believed God See, that's the power of the simple message of the Gospel. See. the gospel is the power of God to Salvation for everyone who believes that's why our duty is to share the gospel. God is the one who makes States work even though Jonas and some bad messaging.
Yet forty days. That means God's grace. God is not just going to zap you. The moment you do something wrong. You got some time. God is patient. Got it. I just going to zap you everything that you do, and I'm giving you time, I'm giving you time and then if I shall be overthrown. So if you don't use God's grace, you take God's grace for granted after 40 days, then you will suffer the consequences. There will be judgment, and there will be punishment. You see, even in Jonah's bad messaging, God's grace, and God's judgment there. And that's why when we share the gospel with people, we should not only emphasize the good points. See God is going to save you guys going to take you to heaven, but there are some consequences for failure to disobey God. And our failure for not walking with God there are certain there is such a thing as consequences and there is such a real place. Come. He'll see when we talk to people who have to talk about both Heaven and Hell and also God punishes See you at 40 days and none of us shall be overthrown. You see? And the people of Nineveh believed God. See? Who pursued the ninevites? God good God no they were ready to repent. You bet. even with Joanna's bed messaging, the people believe God, they called for what
How many hours Believers will be Believers for solo Midwood? Never fasted.
Those people just accepted the message of God, they believe and now they're fasting fasting as a picture of really realizing your need for God, that showing that, I mean, I'm in great distress. I really hate my condition. My scenes are really great. I asked to really focus on God right now. But the people call for a fast and put on sackcloth. That's a sign of humility. They just going all out from the greatest of them. To the least of them. So everybody repented.
If you still alive, you still have a chance to repent. Nobody is too far away from the grace of God. As long as you bring me there, still time to repent. I know that you have some people, you don't want to repent.
but if they still breathing, Share the gospel with them. God, can change them be so critical of Jonah. Just think about it, member of the 9/11 happen.
What about those people who did it? Would you feel like you want? Got to forgive them. Naturally, the first reaction, you want them to be punished for what they do night. The Holocaust Hitler, killing all those people in one piece, a little repair. You on something bad happening to him. Must have been feeling. Because remember the horrible people
Don't let me come to your neighborhood now. Okay, somebody just did something horrible to use. They they they lied on you at work and then they took the promotion that you were supposed to get. Do you want them to repair? So you want punishment? Don't be so, holy here. Come on. Don't give me your natural reaction. We have one humble believe, right here.
Alright, let me get you back to the word of God so you can see it.
I think about horrible things people can do to you. Okay, your natural reaction is that you want them to be punished for what they did. But God sees them differently. God is a god of mercy and Grace while we might want punishment for them, God wants them to repent. And that was God's hard for the ninevites. God wanted them to repent and to turn to him. But Jonah did not like that. You see the gospel message is very simple. So, I don't want you to be like Jonah and giving that bad messaging. So, let me review with us what the gospel message is gay 1st Corinthians 15 3 to 4. So I delivered to you as of first importance, what I also receive that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scripture that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scripture. So that's the gospel. Message Christ died, he was buried and he was raised. So cries wants to do the same thing for all of us. All of us will die one day, so God say, hey Google. I will get buried. But guess what, when we accept Christ, we will be raised again in live forever. Okay, the gospel message and Romans road Romans 3:23 says all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. So all that Jonah had to remember. None of the ninevites have sinned, but Jonah has soon also. Jonah was disobedient as the ninevites were Disobedience. You see how sometimes we hate people sin, but we love ours. We look down on people but I was saying it's like it's Mike then. We don't see our sins, but we are quick to see the sin of others. See Jonah was quick to see the scent of the ninevites, but Joe, and I didn't see his own Rebellion, Jonah, the disease own Disobedience to. God all means all and that's all. All means, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. None of us is above the other. All of us on the same Level Playing Field. We all have sinned, we all have broken God's law and in Romans 6:23 says, the rages of sin is death. That means all of us, we can't identify with people because we're all in the same boat we all sinners. We are not so holy that we cannot identify with the greatest Center cuz at the end of the day are hard or just the saying the our heart is wicked above. All thing is a spritz. So all of us can identify with everyone. The worst of Sinners and Arbor holy that we might look So that's why all of us have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and the wages of sin is death. See, there are consequences for our sin, but the consequences we don't have to pay the price because in 1st Corinthians, 5:21 Jesus says that he took up on himself all our sins. So now, when God look at Jesus, God put all our sins on him. So now when God looks at us, God says Jesus, because Jesus is perfect, and Jesus has no sin. So now God can't say, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ. Jesus, our lives of guys at now, I can't extend eternal life to you and I can extend eternal life to the people. You don't like the people that you share the gospel with, so we got it.
Payment for sin is death but because we accept Jesus. Now we can receive the free gift of eternal life. And Romans 10 9 says, if you confess with your mouth, that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart, that God raised him from the dead, you will be what you will be safe. Same from what passed since two days pressure. Preoccupation of the future, whatever it is. You need deliverance from your name, it and God will save. You would deliver you from it. And God says, God raised him from the dead. You will be saved. And that's what God promised to do to everyone who calls on him woman Center teen, everyone will calls on the name of the Lord will be. Save. If Hitler had called him the name of the Lord, Hitler would have been saved. The people in your life that gets on your nerves, if they call in the name of the Lord, that he will be safe. Whether you like it or not and whenever you feel like this is unfair, just think of yourself how much that God has extended grace to you, and all of us benefit from God's grace verse sick. The other thing. Jonah would have missed out on a great thing that God would do flew his life. Bible says those people repented. When we fail to obey God, we fail to see great things that God will do. What we fail to see how God is going to use us. we fail to see if, you know, All the great things that he would do, it is a beautiful thing that those people repented, then it gets even better. Look at verse 6, the the word reach the king of Nineveh and he arose from his throne, remove these Road Covered himself with sackcloth and sit in ashes.
He arose from his form from his throne and remove his robe. The rub is a picture of his authority. It's not the king. Now it's saying I'm submitted to the king says I Surrender. It's like you know when you were a kid, you know somebody like it's with your arm and say call on call until you call on call, I'm not going to let you go and then you just scared.
what the king is doing, but can you calling Uncle Virginia calling out to God. He when the king arose from his growing and he remove his robe, the king is in. God, you are really the king of King. I am a nobody, he covered himself with sackcloth and sit in ashes, that means now the king is repenting of his of his part of the problem. The king is repenting of his part of the problem. Would it be beautiful? Now, our leaders would Repent of their part of the problem.
Wherever your persuasion is politically. You should have read that. Both of them are in a mess.
Neither of them are getting closer to the things of God. They are just far away. Stock quote for the symbol of sorrow and repentance ashes, that's a sign of helplessness and despair. The king is saying, I give up. The king is saying, man, this is too much. The king is saying We've done too much. We got to turn to God. Joke that says the same thing and drove to a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he said in the ashes. Really, the King was following job's example, there of turning to Godda sign of helplessness and despair member Joe Blow us. All his children in one, Dale, us all his business and his health declined. All in one day, he's wife turned away from him. All in one day. You talking about your problems?
Most of us are nowhere, close to Joe.
But in job's afflictions and problems, what did y'all do? He turned to God. In his helplessness and despair in his sorrow, Joe turn to God and that's a difficult. No matter how dire the circumstances we need to turn to God. Because God is able to do far more abundantly above all we could ever, think ask or imagine.
That's why the Bible says be anxious for nothing. But in everything by prayer and supplication, let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding will guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus. Whatever is pure, whatever is Godly, whatever is lovely. Think on these things.
See, whenever you face difficulty you turn to God, God's word will get you flew.
See when the simple message of the Gospel falls on good soil. Repentance followers. When does simple gospel? Message falls on good soil. Repentance follows.
Is it you don't have to fight with people to repent. It just tells you what type of soil that the word has fell on. The pressure is not on you. Did Jonah save those people. I just wanted them to perish.
But the heart was ready cuz I'm going to the Holy Spirit working in us to draw Us near to God.
The God was working in those people hearts. And as a result, they repented. Hebrews 4:12 says, for the word of God is living and active. Read it with me, the word of God is living and active sharper than any two-edged sword. So another for God to reach you, like Tony Evans, put it, you have to let God cut you. Forgot to reach you. You have to let his word cut you. It's a two edged sword. You have to let one side, cut out all the impurity, all the problems with you, all the issues, like, my students would say, out of you and then to let the other side of the sword to he leave. Just like when you go to a physician, and you go to a surgeon when he's cutting you cutting to heal.
Is it sometimes we need that healing. See God use his word to Cutler, hard to realize. What is wrong? And I'm the same side as a two-edged sword. God is not just that doesn't, God does not trying to cast us but it said, God wants to use the other side of the store to do the surgery that is needed. So that we can be healed with God and brings all those things that are bad in our heart, that I that that needs healing so that they can heal properly. The word of God is living and active sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of a soul, and a spirit of wince and of marrow and touched and detentions and intentions of the heart. You don't got knows everything that you thinking about God knows everything that is in your heart. No matter how hard you try to hide it. God knows a tall. There's nothing secret to God. See, that's why we can go before. God, just totally naked and just tell God exactly what's in our hearts. Knows your shortcomings, God knows what you need. You can go before him with confidence. I never feel that you sitting in a church service, and then the read a Bible verse and then it just cuts Leo heart.
It's on the preacher.
The power is in the word. God's word because the Bible says God's word is powerful. God's word is not some old thing. It is what
God's word is alive. Is that some passive thing? God's word is active So when you hear God's word, it it's kind of like that doesn't Rabbi and puts it, you are responsible for what you hear. I want to hear something, you can get it off your mind. It's The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Once you hear something you are responsible for that's why the same God's word is active and leaving. Once you hear God's word, you have to either respond to it or you have to reject it. A lot of us everyday. That's what we doing when we are in service, when we go through God's word, we either have to respond to it, or we have to leave it. That's where a lot of people try to stay away from Reading God's word because they don't want to be held accountable because I am responsible for
God says, all of us will stand before him one day and give account to him. whether you physically pick up the word because you trying to hide God gives natural Revelation chapter 1, right? And you know what is wrong? That's why God says in Jeremiah, I will write my words in there.
All of us hear God's word is engraved into our heart. When we go to God's word, we getting it specifically God's word written into our hearts. And I just Christians everyone. That's why you will see an unbelievers. Do good things sometimes You will see none. Believers do a lot of good things in the world because God's word is written in their heart, whether the submitted to it or not, a 13 stairs. And no creature is hidden from his side. But all are what how Naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom. We must be like, how to give you a
The accountability is right there. This is word is living and active. We have to respond to it either. Would you do it or we rejected? And God says, he will keep us accountable. All of us have to answer. You can just relax. not up to you whether the receipt price on that Paul said I'm not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes only God can save
is God who saves people for the Jew first and also to the Greek that means everyone is on this same equal playing field. See salvation is totally the work of God. God only calls us to share. Only calls us to share knowledge. And our story in verse 7 says, and he issued a proclamation, the king. And publish flu Nineveh by the decree of the king and his Nobles. Not only the king repented, but also his Nobles Let me determine obese. Heard. No. Flock they say anything. So the king calls for a nationwide fast.
Let them that feed or drink water, but let men and beasts be covered with sackcloth. The king calls them to you militie and fasting and let them call out my daily to God. So call to God desperately Let everyone turn from his evil way. The king is calling everybody to repentance. Now, the king is our preacher.
Turn from his evil way, in from the violence. That is in his hands. The simple power of the Gospel message.
I don't think there's any greater satisfaction to see a changed life. When you share the gospel with somebody, and then they were going one way and turned completely man, this is satisfying. If any of you have never had the opportunity to bring somebody to Christ o work hard at it to bring somebody to Christ. And see their life change. You changing a whole family tree. A family that was just going like in the totally different way and then to see how God restores them and change them totally now and repurpose them for his work. Oh man, it is one of the most amazing things that you will witness. When you see that a family that was heading toward destruction, and then you bring that individual back to God. You changed their whole family tree for Generations.
Jonah, even if he's reluctant messaging. Seeing a whole country turning to God. Isn't that beautiful?
Just got to love that other thing. Faith is active. We can say that we repent and we don't show it in our actions. Faith is Faith with me.
What do you see there? The king repented, right in verse 6 then what did he do in verse 7?
Then we just sing actions. Number one, he sent out a proclamation, he didn't just keep it to himself, he published it from to resend it out, to all the people all throughout the country, and a nice telling people to fast, you stealing people to Humble themself. He's telling people to call out on God and not just call out on God. A passively but calling out on God, desperately mightily like Lexi, really like like that. A lot of us, we don't call out to God, like our life, depends on it. We still think that we got it.
God wants us to turn to him completely. And God wants us to show him that I am old. And I'm turning. I'm turning, I'm turning to you to turn to God. Means that you, you can say that you are a believer in that change. All of us have to be changed by a woman's 12 or just wanted to say that. I beseech you therefore Brethren by the body as a Living Sacrifice. Holy and acceptable to God, this is your reasonable service in King James to. Look at you can't say, you are believer and not be transformed. See the word of God transforms us. It's about, it's about life change, and I got to love verse 9 The king remembers the Kings. We can gear. Who knows? God may turn and relent? And turn from his Fierce anger, so that we may not perish.
It is a lesson for us. There is a lesson for us there. See, we can demand forgiveness.
Anytime somebody is The Mending for giving us. They don't deserve it.
We cannot demand forgiveness. See the Kings Pastor? Who knows? God, may turn and relent and turn from his Fierce anger, so that we may not perish. That's what that's a broken man. We are broken heart. Somebody, it's not, like, I can't you forgive me for this. You don't deserve it. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me. I really hate what I did to you that that was not right. I know you don't have to forgive me but but I'm just begging. You can you please find it in your heart to forgive me if not right now, but later when you are able to See the posture of forgiveness is broken, have to be broken again? Or you can forgive me for Repented. You haven't repented the king here, who knows? Who knows? Maybe God will forgive When you put something on you got up you have to be ready for the consequences. If we repent. God May relent God may turn. Got may change the consequences that we are about to face. Turned from his Fierce anger, so that we may not perish. You see, we cannot demand forgiveness.
The other lesson is that humility is a sign of repentance, okay? If we truly repent we have to be humble. We have to be 3:10 when God saw that day. What day did how they turn from their evil way? God. Did what God willing to see? God is looking for true repentance from us. When God. So what day did, what was that looking for their? What is that? Actions number faith is active. When God, so why'd they did not what they say.
You with me? When God, so wide day, how he turned evil God will enter God change. Relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them and he did not do it and he did not do it. Some of you say, I thought the Bible says, God never changes.
Yes. God standards will never change. But when we repent, we give God an opportunity to forgive and relent of the consequences that we are to face. God where does a few standards still remain the same? The MB now give God an opportunity to change the consequences of their actions, because God says, if we confess our sins is able to forgive us all our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. The one we repent, we give God the opportunity now, to remove the consequences, but it is since Tilson. Is lying still lying violence. Still wrong. Whatever sin it is, you name, it is still wrong. But when we repent we give God an opportunity to relent to forgive And to remove the consequences from our lives lessons for us to go home on true repentance, move the heart of God, true, repentance moves, the heart of God, when we repent, we give God an opportunity to that God is looking for safe with me. And it said the second part to Nat lip service, let's take a break, I'll put it back like a brake. Lets all ready, let's read it together. 123 go. God is looking for actions, not lip service. Let's say it. Like now you mean it and then when you come to action say cloud ready. God is looking for actions that lip service. Remember John sartin, the blessing is in the deal Wing. James tells us that faith without works is dead. So God is looking for Action. Do the message in the next? She'll be thankful that our Lord gives Second Chances. But remember, also, it is always better to obey the first time. Remember the consequences Joe and I had to face He wants to use. You turn away from your sin and Obey Christ today. So tomorrow is not certain member salvation is today, he cannot use a disobedient vessel, stop running away from commitment saying yes to God can revolutionize your life for the better. Amen. Only to amen. Amen. I love the way John Maxwell quotes this, when you have a second chance. Make It Count. You have no idea how many people you can help, if you seek God's forgiveness, obey, his calling and take the second chance he offered you to lead with. Excellence.
When you have a second shift, Make It Count, you have no idea how many people you can help. If you seek God's forgiveness, obey his calling and take the second chance he offers you to lead with Excellence, isn't God? The God Who said?
