1 Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him.
2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him;
3 and they began to come up to Him and say, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and to give Him slaps in the face.
4 Pilate came out again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.”
5 Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!”
6 So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.”
7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.”
8 Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid;
9 and he entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 So Pilate said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?”
11 Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
12 As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, “If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.”
13 Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!”
15 So they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
16 So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.
17 They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.
18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.
19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek.
21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’ ”
22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”
V.1-3
V.1-3
Punched, beaten and mocked (v.1-3)
Punched, beaten and mocked (v.1-3)
1 Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him.
2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him;
3 and they began to come up to Him and say, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and to give Him slaps in the face.
Pilate found nothing wrong with Jesus, so he has Jesus flogged or scourged in the hope that the Jaws will be ok with that as a punishment.
Jesus was scourged
Its a form of punishment
to beat with a whip
its a horrific beating that is accompanied with other forms a punishment
whip description
our Lord was beaten
we don’t know how many lashes Jesus got, but we know that it was not more then 40
3 “He may beat him forty times but no more, so that he does not beat him with many more stripes than these and your brother is not degraded in your eyes.
Think of a completely innocent man Our Lord being whipped for nothing. then...
Then the soldiers made a crown of thorns
This is under Pilate, the Romans performed this act.
They are treating Jesus as if He is a convicted felon.
It is believed that the thorns were that of a date palm thorn.
***photos of the thorns***
lets look at something....
18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you;
And you will eat the plants of the field;
Isn’t it amazing that one of the results of sin, (thorns) came because of sin, has been placed as a crown on His head .
Then try gave Him a purple (which could have been a old dirty purple rag) Purple being the color that represents royalty.
They mocked Him saying “Hail, King of the Jews!”
While slapping Him in the face.
complete mockery and disrespect.
Presentation (v.4-5)
Presentation (v.4-5)
4 Pilate came out again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.”
5 Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!”
Pilate again, does not have a problem with Jesus,
its fair to think that he was going to bring Jesus out so that the Jews would see the beating, and the mocking that they may change there mind,.
after all, it is the Romans beating a Jew (the Jews don’t like the Romans)
and Barabbas was about to be released to them
So Jesus comes out, beaten, the crown of thorns and the rob.
He faces this angry mob
v. 6
v. 6
What the Jews wanted (v.6)
What the Jews wanted (v.6)
6 So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.”
The Jewish elite did not care, but yelled for Jesus to be crucified.
at this point the crowd is in a uproar also
for it teaches in Mark…..
11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead.
Pilate says that he does not find any guilt in Him, He does not want to have Jesus crucified
also during this time Pilate is getting a message from His wife
19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.”
So Pilate is confused. Unsure
v.7
v.7
7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.”
This is another attempt by the Jew to convince Pilate.
They accused Jesus of blasphemy, which is a law that is also under the Roman law.
The Jews want Him dead because He said He is God
The Romans believe that Caesar is God
So Pilate is in a rough situation
if He does not handle this situation He could upset the Jews and upset Rome.
v. 8-10
v. 8-10
a concerned leader (v.8-10)
a concerned leader (v.8-10)
8 Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid;
9 and he entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 So Pilate said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?”
Pilate has his wife, the upset crowd, a weak leadership status , worried about being reported to Caesar
Pilate is at a cross road (what do I do???)
So Pilate asks Him who are you?
Jesus does not answer
SO Pilate tells Jesus of his authority,
God is in Control
God is in Control
v. 11
v. 11
Jesus states a fact as well as (in a way) give Pilate comfort.
11 Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.”
Pilate is in control of nothing.
Without the power of God, no one can move a finger.
Jesus is saying that the Pilate is nothing in comparison to the Jews that had the truth and rejected it and handed Him over to be killed.
v.12
v.12
The guilty ones (v.12)
The guilty ones (v.12)
12 As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, “If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.”
Pilate does not want to have Jesus crucified
He is being pulled socially, politically and personally
the Bible says he (searched out and was anxious about ) ways he can release Jesus.
but the jews pulled on what Pilate was concerned about. His relationship with Caesar
the Jews to manipulate him by saying that He is not a friend to Caesar
Plus if Caesar is a king/god Jesus is oppose to Caesar.
pilate is confused
v. 13-14
v. 13-14
a complex leader (v13-14)
a complex leader (v13-14)
13 Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!”
Pilate is under pressure
its not the 6 hour, the day before the passover.
During this time try would be starting to kill lambs for the passover.
v.15
v.15
The Jews claim there king (v.15)
The Jews claim there king (v.15)
15 So they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
We see the sad truth,
The Jews dont want Jesus.
By them saying they have no king but Caesar............
Had politics become your god????

v.16-18
16 So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.
17 They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.
18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between.
John does not go into detail of the horrors of the cross
When we know about this here, is that Jesus is the Lamb of God, the sacrifice for our sin.
photo of the places.
He was led out of the city and lifted up on the cross, for everyone to see.
on this mount.
7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
8 Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.
There would later find a ram to sacrifice, not a lamb. But now the Lamb is here!!!
We see prophecy being accomplished. (John 1:29)
On this very mount where Abraham was going to sacrifice his son, Jesus is the right sacrifice for us all.
V. 19-22
When someone was crucified, normally a post was written on who it was and there crime.
Pilate wrote Jesus, King of the Jews
the Jews had issue with this
But Pilate didn’t change what He wrote.
lets look at the law of old.
the sacrifice , who blood would be shed for sin, is to be taken out of the city (Leviticus 6:30, 16:27)
and anyone who hung on a tree is under God’s curse (Dt 21:23)
We see here that Jesus did this all for our atonement (the reconciliation of God and man through Jesus Christ)
Amen!!!!
