Luke 1:46-55 Mary’s Christmas Song
You know, Christmas is really the only holiday that has its own music. Oh, some of the holidays we celebrate might have a song here and there. But Christmas has so many songs. From classic to modern, from secular to religious, there are Christmas songs for children all the way to adults.
So, it bears to question. What is the best Christmas song? Oh, there are some real famous songs.
From Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” to Maria Carey’s “All I want for Christmas is you”
Away in a Manger to Silent Night.
What makes these songs stand out? What makes us remember them? Is it the catchy tune, the pleasant melody, the rememberable lyrics (grandma got run over by a reindeer)
Christmas songs are special to us, but there is one Christmas Song that you might not be quite as familiar with. And it is found right here in the scripture. Sung by a young woman whose life had been changed by the Lord. Let us listen to this song.
[Read Scripture]
The song that Mary sings is so special. It was not composed by some great musician or song writer, it is a song that was sung by a simple young woman. For by the most part, unknown to the world. But God moved on her life and gave her a song to sing. Think about what we hear from this song. First…
It is a Song that Magnifies (46-47)
· Now why does Mary sing? Because of who the Lord is and what he has done!
· God had moved in her life, and she sings to rejoice over the Lord.
· You know music is a window into our soul. It is a reflection of who we are.
· Now let me ask you, what does your life magnify? What does your soul sing?
· Does your soul magnify your problems or does it magnify Jesus?
· Does your soul magnify your faults and failures or does it magnify the Savior?
· Does you soul magnify your sins or does it magnify the All Mighty God?
· We need to think about what are we making bigger in our life. That is what magnifies mean. To enlarge, to make bigger.
· Psalm 34:3 “O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.”
· If you are magnifying anything else but Jesus, friend you have a song of misery. But if you have a song that magnifies Jesus in your life, then friend that it is a song of majesty.
It is a Song that is Moving (48-49)
· Now this is a song that magnifies, but it is also a song that is moving.
· Have you ever had a song that just moved on your heart. Why does it move on us, maybe because it spoke to the reality of our situation.
· Mary’s song is moving because, the Lord dealt with her even though she was basically a no-body.
· She had gone through life unnoticed, but God saw her. And friend I want you to know, that God sees you too.
· Do you know, God doesn’t care that you aren’t successful. God doesn’t care if you’re not popular. God doesn’t care about where you are from or where you live. Because God’s focus is not on the outside things. He is only focused on you, because he loves you.
· You know, we sing at Christmas about Santa Claus and Reindeers, about snow and presents. But those songs are songs that move us, what moves me is knowing that Jesus loves me.
· Mary’s song is moving, because Jesus didn’t come to pick and choose, he came for everybody.
· John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”
· Mary was moved to sing, because the Lord had changed her life, he had given her something that no one else could. He had given her life and purpose. And she accepted that gift.
It is a Song of Mercy (50)
· Now we see that this is a song that moves but it is also a song of mercy. Look at verse 50.
· What is mercy? It isn’t the game we played as kids when we locked hands and tried to make the other to submit.
· Mercy, is God looking at us, and seeing that we were helpless.
· You ever seen an animal that is helpless. Maybe a kitten or a little bird. They couldn’t save themselves, so you helped them, because something in your heart felt compassion for them.
· Friend that is what mercy is. And that is how God sees us. His heart longs for us. He wanted to help us.
· Matthew 9:36 “But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.”
· Mary sings in her song that God’s mercy is on them that fear him. This isn’t a fear of fright and dread. It isn’t a fear of being scared. It is a fear of knowing who God is and not running away from him.
· It is love for the Lord, but it is also knowing that he is above us. God is the creator. He is not like us. We are to be like him.
· So, when we sing unto the Lord, we should be thankful for his mercy that he shows us each and every day.
It is a Song with Meaning (51-54)
· Now there is a fourth thing that we see about this amazing Christmas song. And that is, it is a song with meaning.
· You know there are some songs that are sung today, I’m scratching my head over, try to understand what it is about.
· I mean, who came up with that Baby Shark song needs to be locked up. It is just a pointless song.
· Praise the Lord, the song we read here, is not pointless. It has meaning.
· What is this song about – it is about God.
· She tells us that God is mighty!
o Do you know that God is so mighty, that he holds everything we know in place.
o God is so mighty, that those who think that they are in charge, aren’t really in charge.
o God is so mighty, that he takes those who are so proud and he humbles them.
· Friends we serve a mighty God, he is so mighty that he can do the impossible.
· He feeds the hungry.
o You know people are hungry. They are hungry to be loved, hungry for companionship, hungry for purpose.
o You know what God will give you those things.
o There have been times where I have been hungry for a certain food. I would go up to that person and ask them to make it for me. Because I was craving it in my stomach.
o Let me tell you, if you are hungry and craving for peace, joy, happiness, love in your life, Jesus Christ can satisfy it.
· Now listen to what Mary says, the rich he sends empty away.
o Don’t try to bring all those things you think you need in life with you to Jesus.
o Oh, I want to be a good Christian, but Lord I can’t get rid of those things that keep me from you.
o Let me tell you, you come like that to the Lord, he is going to send you right out these doors hungry.
o If you can’t put down the things of life, you will never be filled with what the Lord has to give to you.
· Listen, the song that Mary sings, is a song with meaning, because she realized it in her life. She now knew that Lord had given her life meaning.
It is a Song for Mankind (55)
· Now there are a lot of Christmas songs out there. Some are meant for the sophisticated. Some of meant for the simple. Some are meant for adults and some are meant for children.
· Who is this song meant for? It is meant for you. And all of mankind. This is a song for everybody who will accept Christ.
· It was not just a song for that time, it is a song that is meant for this time. Because guess what, God hasn’t change.
· Malachi 3:6 “For I am the LORD, I change not;…”
· The God who moved on Mary’s life, is the same God who wants to move on yours right now.
· Mary’s song was inspire by God, - 2 Timothy 3:16 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God…”
· Mary sang a song, that God wanted you to hear. It was written just for you.
You know there are some songs I grow tired of hearing, the melody gets old. The lyrics get worn out. But here is a song that that has stood throughout the years. You know why? Because it is about Jesus. Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” Do you want to sing this Christmas song from the heart? Then come and give your heart to Jesus, so you can know what this song is really about.
