12 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ The King of Israel!”
14 Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
Jesus just performed a climatic miracle which was raising Lazarus from the died.
A very large crowd of Galilean pilgrims had come to Jerusalem during thePassover feast because they heard Jesus was coming.
Josephus (Bel. vi. 422–425) describes one Passover, just before the Jewish War (AD 66–70), when 2,700,000 people took part, not counting the defiled and the foreigners who were present in the city.
Theres multiple times when large crowds followed Jesus throughout the scriptures .
John 6- Jesus feeding the 5,000
Matt. 16 - Jesus feeds the 4,000
Luke 19- There was a great multitude around Jesus in the story about Zacheus.
Mark 3- When Jesus healed the man with the withered hand. A great multitude followed Him then.
We see Jesus is not a stranger to large groups of people following Him.
Wild enthusiasm over Jesus broke out.
They begin spreading their clothes on the road, cut down branches from palm trees.
Matt 21:8 “8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road.”
The Hosanna which means, Save Now or please save!
qouting from Psalm 118:25-26 “25 Save now, I pray, O Lord; O Lord, I pray, send now prosperity. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We have blessed you from the house of the Lord.”
The ascribed messianic titles to Him - Blessed is He who comes ( lit., The Coming One)
John 11:27 “27 She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.””
Also they called Jesus “The King Of Israel”
This wasn’t a term to make Jesus a political figure as we see in John 6:15 “15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.”
What does the title “The King of Israel” mean?
It meant that Jesus was indeed God.
Isa. 44:6 “6 “Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God.”
15 The Lord has taken away your judgments, He has cast out your enemy. The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; You shall see disaster no more.
3 They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: “Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints!
16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS
Jesus is elevated above every king and every lord.
2. He was the expected Messiah
49 Nathanael answered and said to Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
Nathanael called Jesus the King of Israel giving Jesus far more respect and honor then a typical rabbi or teach in those days.
3. Means that we bow down and worship Him.
Luke 19:39-40 “39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.””
Jesus did not refuse the worship of people.
4. Jesus Kingdom is not of this world.
33 Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”
35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.”
vs 37 - Jesus said that His Kingdom is the Kingdom of truth which overshadows all kingdoms.
