“Round the mess hall”
The camp in the wilderness
Place for every one and everyone had a place (Num 2)
No shameful thing to be done within the camp because it was holy (Dt 23:10-14)
Miriam seven days outside b/c of leprosy (Num 12:13-14)
Executions (Num 15:35-36)
carcasses of sacrifices
Our Lord suffered outside the camp
DISCUSSION
Because Jesus shamefully suffered outside the camp
We have an exclusive benefit (Heb 13:10)
Temple worship is not compatible with Christianity
Priests received a portion of the sacrifice
As priests we receive the benefit of the sacrifice of Jesus (Jn 6:53-56)
If in a false religion, no right to the benefit of the death of Christ
We have sanctification (Heb 13:11-12)
Lev 16:27 .
You had to go outside the camp to be made holy/clean
Jesus went outside the camp so we could be made holy
We bear His reproach (Heb 13:13)
We have got to go outside the city gates
Cross a shameful thing (1 Cor 1:23; Heb 12:2); how many of his disciples went to Calvary?
reproach—insult, disgrace
How is your cross-bearing (Lk 14:27 “And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.” )
Acts 5:41 “And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.”
Part two
We seek a city (Heb 13:14)
Hebrews wanted the acceptance in the Jewish community and still follow Christ.
Nothing abiding in the city
“This world is not my home”
Heb 11:10 “For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”
We give thanks (Heb 13:15)
We offer sacrifices by Him (Heb 7:27)
Sacrifices are not blood sacrifices but of thanksgiving (Lev 7:12; Ps 107:22)
Like the daily sacrifices (Ex 29:38-42), we worship without ceasing, continually
We offer the fruit of our lips—singing (Eph 5:19-20), prayer (Phil 4:6), preaching (Ps 26:7)
We share what we have (Heb 13:16)
Don’t neglect, overlook—isn’t it easy to overlook?
to do good, well doing (Gal 6:10)
to communicate = to share, to partner with other believers (Ga 6:6; Phil 1:7)
These sacrifices please God (Phil 4:18)
EXHORTATION
Because He suffered outside the gate, look how we’ve been blessed
Do you have the benefit of his death? Sanctified? bearing His reproach? seeking a city? give thanks? share?
