John 4:1–30

THE CHRIST, OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST—vv. 1–6

A. Preaching—vv. 1–2. Christ’s ministry was that of an evangelist, winning people to God. He did not baptize anyone.

John 4:1–2 “1 Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were)”

B. JESUS WAS ALL OVER THE PLACE PREACHING AND TEACHING, HEALING—vv. 3–4 TELLS US, AS JESUS AND THE DISCIPLES WERE Returning to Galilee, Jesus passed through Samaria. The Jews and the Samaritans did not speak to each other, really they despised each other.

Verse 3-4 tells us:

John 4:3–4 “3 He (Jesus) left Judea and went away again into Galilee. 4 And He had to pass through Samaria.

They disciples even thought that they all would go around Samaria.

Anyone here do that today that literally go out of your way to avoid someone that you have judged, or maybe to avoid a “certain” neighborhood?

C. In verses’ 5–6 we read that Jesus was very weary and thirsty, He stopped at Jacob’s well. It was the sixth hour—12 noon.

John 4:5–6 5 So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph; 6 and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.”

II. Now were going to get into the THE CONVERSATION, the real reason that Jesus wanted to go through Samaria.

A. Savior—vv. 7–8. There was a woman there, Jesus asked the woman for a drink. Normally, the Jews would not speak to the Samaritans.

John 4:7–8 7 There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.”

One point that hit my heart here, Jesus had sent the disciples into the little town to buy food. There were times that Jesus not only wanted to teach the disciples, but Jesus also wanted to make sure that he showed love and compassion to the woman.

B. The woman was surprised, shocked really that Jesus would ask her for a drink. Jesus looked at this woman as a soul that needed help.

Verse 9 tells us:

John 4:9 “9 Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?” (Remember, Jews had no dealings with Samaritans.)

C. Jesus used water as a symbol of salvation. Notice the term—LIVING WATER!

John 4:10 “10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”(Jesus is now making the point of letting her know exactly who she is having a conversation with.)

D.Now Jesus is getting to the real reason for this conversation. Salvation.

In verses 11-15 we read: John 4:11–15 11 She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? 12 “You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.”

1. So Jesus knows what’s about to happen. Problem—vv. 11–12. He had nothing with which to draw the water from the well so He asked the woman.

2. Pardon—vv. 13–15. Jesus was speaking of man’s spiritual thirst. Salvation would be a well of water—everlasting life. When she understood, the woman wanted the water of life. AMEN!

When we see and observe Christians, don’t we see a difference, well you should. The smiles, the kindness, the caring. This is what Jesus is wanting to do with the woman. To let her know that through Him, Jesus Christ, she can have peace, salvation, love, joy.

III. So, now we are going to find out THE CHARACTER of the woman, watch how Jesus is setting her up for this conversion:

A. This Samaritan woman was a Sinner with a capital “S” An of those in here this morning?—vv. 16–18. This woman had had five husbands, and was living with a man, who was not her husband. Jesus knew this.

John 4:16–18 16 He said to her, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.”

B. The woman recognized Jesus as a prophet, there was something different about this man.

John 4:21–24 “21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 “You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 “But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

C. So here, Jesus is telling the woman, as well as you and I, to Worship God through the Spirit. The Jews worshiped God through tradition, rules and regulations, No one can have salvation except through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

D. The woman did not know she was speaking to Christ the Messiah, yet.

IV. WATCH WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HER CONVERSION, HER UNDERSTANDING TAKES PLACE—vv. 27–30

A. Surprise—v. 27. The disciples returned, surprised that Jesus was talking to this sinful woman. The disciples saw the sin of the woman; they did not see her as a soul in need!

John 4:27–30 “27 At this point His disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?” 28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?” 30 They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.

B. SO, HERE WE SEE AGAIN JESUS AS A Soul-winner. The woman returned to the city, telling the people about Christ.

C. The people from the town heard the woman’s story and began Seeking this “living water.” —v. 30. “So the people came streaming from the village to see him”—LB. This woman became a soul-winner!

Your all sitting there probably saying to yourselves, “BUT THAT WAS JESUS,” HE KNEW WHAT HISTORY THE WOMAN HAD. OK YOUR RIGHT.

Do you know the history of someone that needs Jesus? Do you know the sadness, the pain, the troubles that they have been through. Sure we do, we all know someone like this. Reach out, start up a conversation, show some compassion and love.

AMEN
