A Child is Born
“although partaking of [God’s] divine attributes, [he] will have the most human of all arrivals upon the earth, namely, birth. The expected perfect king will be human and divine.” p245 Oswalt
- Illustrate- The hope of a child. Pregnancy.
- This child is for you. He is given as a gift.
- His birth has a major impact on your life. Like perhaps the birth of a grandchild or the birth of a new king. (Luke 2:11)
- It’s funny how all our hopes can be placed on a child.
Government on His Shoulders
-A New World Order. The government is in good hands.
government … upon … shoulder—The ensign of office used to be worn on the shoulder, in token of sustaining the government
The government will be on His shoulders figuratively refers to the kingly robe to be worn by the Messiah. As King, He will be responsible to govern the nation. In Isaiah’s day Judah’s leaders were incompetent in governing the people. But the Messiah will govern properly.
Names General
- Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary on the Bible Chapter 9- Give then, O Lord, to thy people to know thee by every endearing name, and in every glorious character.
- Help us to know Him fully in all these ways.
Called Wonderful Counselor
- The Bible Knowledge Commentary 9:6–7- Counselor, and the people will gladly listen to Him as the authoritative One. In the kingdom many people will be anxious to hear the Messiah teach God’s ways
- The wisdom of God (Ro 11:33, Col 2:3)
- Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary on the Bible Chapter 9- He is the Counsellor, for he knew the counsels of God from eternity; and he gives counsel to men, in which he consults our welfare. He is the Wonderful Counsellor; none teaches like him.
-Wonderful Counselor- App- Do you live according to His counsel?
Called Mighty God
- Mighty God- Is Jesus your God or is He just your Savior? (Wise men bowed and worshipped)
Called Everlasting Father
- What if your dad didn’t have to die? What if he was eternal?
- “Many kings claimed to be father to their people...” p247 Oswalt
- “A Father here is a benevolent protector which is the task of the ideal king and is also the way God himself cares for His people.” ESV Study Bible pg 1257 note on Isaiah 9:6
- Everlasting Father- Imagine never being fatherless.
App- You have a protector and Father who lives forever and is mighty God to help take care of you. You ought to rejoice in that and you ought to worry less.
Earthly kings leave their people after a short reign; He will reign over and bless them for ever [HENGSTENBERG].
The Messiah will be a “fatherly” Ruler.
Called Prince of Peace
-Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary on the Bible Chapter 9- As the Prince of Peace, he reconciles us to God; he is the Giver of peace in the heart and conscience; and when his kingdom is fully established, men shall learn war no more.
- App- Peace- The Christian never has to be without peace. I don’t mean to say we will never have struggles. But Christians have been known throughout history to suffer persecution, to go to prison or to go into the Roman Coliseum to fight wild beasts or to go to the stake to be burned alive with remarkable peace. How could these Christians have peace in the midst of such terrible circumstances? I have witnessed this too in lesser ways in our day. I have witnessed (Cancer, Ronnie). Why? Because they had Jesus. Because of Jesus they knew that their ultimate fate was secure and they were willing to place their temporary fate in His hands as well. If you don’t have peace today, remind yourself that you have Jesus and He is the prince of peace and you need to start trusting Him.
Government and Peace without End
- “The final king, the king to end all kings” p248, Oswalt.
- “The empire of grace will forever expand” - ESV Study Bible pg 1257 note on Isaiah 9:7
- Infinitely expanding government and peace
He will reign on David’s Throne with justice & righteousness forever
- David’s Messiah will be a forever King. This will happen!
- Justice and righteousness are in short supply in our world. But one day our world will be a place of justice and righteousness.
The zeal of God
- App- God will do this! You can trust that He will accomplish it. You can look forward to it and live according to it!
The coming of the millennial kingdom depends on God, not Israel
