Jars: Jesus is Immanuel
John 1:1-5, 14
INTRODUCTION
-Jars of Clay - We make mistakes.
ILL- Putting up Christmas lights twice (First purchase were too blue)
Incarnation= God taking on flesh.
Takes on the Jar of Clay- but Jesus overcomes it.
Immanuel = God with us.
John 1:1–5 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Set Up- What is the” Word”? - Old Testament understanding that had significance to the Romans.
Genesis 1:3 ESV
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
Psalm 33:6 ESV
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
Psalm 107:20 ESV
20 He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.
Isaiah 55:10–11 ESV
10 “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
Greek use of Logos= reasoning, understanding. Greeks saw it as bringing order. John hijacks their term and points them to Jesus.
Jesus is the incarnate Word. The Word who became flesh.
Matthew 1:20–23 ESV
20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

2 Truths Revealed in the Incarnation

1- Jesus is God (1)

John 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

3 Characteristics of Jesus as God

A- Jesus is Eternal

In the beginning
Direct relationship back to Genesis 1:1
Not a starting point- but a point in time before the starting point.
He wasn’t created- He did the creating.

B- Jesus is Relational (1-2)

John 1:1–2 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
"with God"= literally, "toward God"= Face to face relationship. - An interaction between the Word and God.
It's the reason the Son offers us a relationship with the Father.
A relationship with the Son is a relationship with the Father.
John 14:7–11 ESV
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

C- Jesus is Identical (1, 3)

John 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:3 ESV
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Trinity= God is 3 in one. One God, consists of more than one person, they relate to each other, they've always existed.
Identical- I don't mean like Identical twins- I mean 2 of the same exact person. When you see one you see the other. Exactly alike. Separate yet the same.
Identical in Works (3)
John 1:3
No distinguishing one's work from the other.
"The deeds and the words of Jesus are the deeds and the words of God.", Gary Vanderet
"All things"= because you cannot separate their work.
Colossians 1:16 ESV
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Hebrews 1:1–2 ESV
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
"Through Him"= common preposition for Jesus- He is the Mediator. He works between man and God.
They both deserve credit as one creator.

2- Jesus is Man (14)

John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
He became “flesh”= He is Human
He put on a “jar of clay”.
Philippians 2:5–8 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
Human traits
born, grew, tired, thirsty, hungry, physically weak, died.
Necessary for our salvation.
Second Adam.
First Adam= Brought sin in the world. His seed passed the curse of sin.
Second Adam= Didn’t have the curse of sin.
Conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Born of Mary. - A Virgin Birth. No chance that Jesus inherited the sin nature.
Romans 5:12–14 ESV
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.
Romans 5:18–21 ESV
18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Test of orthodoxy.
1 John 4:2 ESV
2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,
2 John 7 ESV
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist.
CONCLUSION
Jesus became man in order to bring life.
John 3:16–21 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
We have to choose between darkness and light.
He is the only one who qualifies to bring Light. God and Man.
John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
