Intro: Probably the most exciting parts of Bible reading are the genealogies of where we read someone begot someone, and they begot someone else, and we don’t know how to pronounce any of their names. Just kidding! Though genealogies are boring to most of us, they are very important God or he would not have inspired them.
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
Your genealogy can tell you a lot about your families past and it also helps one understand a lot about the present.
Teutsch Family Tree- Traced back to the early 1700’s in Edenkoben, Germany to a Johann Philip Teutsch and his bride Anna Christina Berosel. There were 7 children born in this union of which Johann Wilhelm Teutsch is where my family tree starts. Johann married Philippina Bleystein and had four sons. He was a blacksmith/ironworker/mechanic. That might be the reason we were a rodeo family.
Johann also became involved with a religious activist, Maximilian Ludwig Proli, who was later named “Count de Leon” who was arrested under the accusations that he was using religion to defraud the citizens of Oberrad and was planning a revolution against the government. Johann testified on behalf of Count de Leon as did many others and the trial ended with no convictions. Johann was identified as an evangelical, blacksmith and landlord in official court records.
Jesus has a family tree/genealogy that tells a lot about His earthly family and we’re going to look at it this morning and tonight.
Text; Mt. 1:1-17
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.
3 Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram.
4 Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon.
5 Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse,
6 and Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.
7 Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah begot Asa.
8 Asa begot Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah.
9 Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah.
10 Hezekiah begot Manasseh, Manasseh begot Amon, and Amon begot Josiah.
11 Josiah begot Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were carried away to Babylon.
12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconiah begot Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel.
13 Zerubbabel begot Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor.
14 Azor begot Zadok, Zadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud.
15 Eliud begot Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob.
16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.
Listing a person’s family tree is an odd way of Matthew opening up the NT gospels, but genealogies were a big deal for the Jewish people. Genealogies were significant because they communicate a person’s pedigree, social standing and status.They traced ancestral claims to land and positions of authority, they were outlines for tracing history, and they revealed ancestral origins.
Jesus’ family tree shows His pedigree. Jesus’ family lineage travels through many of the Old Testament patriarchs such as Solomon, David, Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham. All Jewish people took great pride from descending from the great patriarchs such as Abraham.
These are not all the names in Jesus’ genealogy, but are set out in three generations of 14 for easy remembrance. Look at [v.17];
[v. 1-6] We see the promise of God to Abraham and David being fulfilled.
[v.7-11] From Solomon to the captivity where Israel was judged in her sin
[v.12-16] After the captivity till the promised redemption of God through His Son Jesus, the fulfillment of the prophesies we’ve been studying the past few weeks.

Because a person’s family line proved his or her standing as one of God’s chosen people, Matthew began by showing that Jesus was a descendant of Abraham, the father of all Jews, and a direct descendant of David, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah’s line. The Messiah was to be the son of Abraham and the son of David; He was to be a descendant of both.
God gave to Abraham and his seed (the Messiah) the promise of blessings for the whole world.
1 Now the Lord had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, From your family And from your father’s house, To a land that I will show you.
2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
18 In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ.
God gave to David and his seed (the Messiah) the promise of eternal government
12 “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
11 The Lord has sworn in truth to David; He will not turn from it: “I will set upon your throne the fruit of your body.
The Jews believed these promises of God. Therefore, Matthew sets out to prove that Jesus “who is called Christ” (Mt. 1:16) is the promised son of Abraham and the promised son of David, their long awaited Messiah.
We believe a lot of things that are said about people these days. Some of it is true and some of it is not. Yet we often form an opinion about someone based on what we hear or read.
Have you come to the conclusion that Jesus is the Messiah based on what you have heard and read?

Many people do a genealogy search not just to find out about their family roots but also to see if there is any DNA issues in their family trees [23andMe]. DNA tests can identify mutations in your genes, chromosomes or proteins. These mutations can indicate if you have or don't have a genetic condition. DNA tests can also identify your risk for developing certain health conditions or passing on a genetic disorder.
In these 17 verses we met 46 people whose lifetimes span 2,000 years. All were ancestors of Jesus, but they varied considerably in personality, spirituality, and experience.
Some were heroes of faith— Abraham, Isaac, Ruth, and David.
Some had shady reputations— Tamar, Rahab and the wife of Uriah.
Many were ordinary people— Hezron, Ram, Nahshon, and Salmon.
Others were evil— Manasseh and Abijah.
And on top of all this, there are five women mentioned in Jesus’ family tree which is very unusual. [In the morning prayers of a Jewish male, he habitually thanked God that God had not made him a Gentile, a slave or a woman]
What do all these people, except Jesus, have in common in their DNA? A genetic disorder called SIN! We were born with it!
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
The reason people have genetic disorders physically is because we have a sin nature.
The reason we all have dysfunctional family trees and skeletons in our past is because of our sin nature.
The reason we have a corrupt and wicked society today is because our family trees have become an enchanted forest under the spell of our sin nature!
14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
But Matthew didn’t point out all these things to condemn us, but to show that God’s Son, Jesus the Jewish Messiah, came to save us from our sin!
17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Never let your past DNA determine your future!!

What if you could choose your family tree? What type of pedigree would you have? Would it be filled with the rich and famous, sports hero’s, presidents, or maybe Hollywood stars like Gene Autry.
Would you have a any shady characters and unwed mothers? Probably not.
But One baby did pick his own pedigree, and look what he chose: an ordinary human family with scoundrels and saints mixed together! He had holy men like Abraham, wicked kings like Ahab, sweet saintly Ruth, and sexy seductress Bathsheba. Jesus was born in a usual way into the very real world of a dysfunctional human family.
But the difference in Jesus and us is what is said in [v.16] “Joseph the husband of Mary”.
The first promise and prophecy of scripture foretold of a kinsman-redeemer who would be the seed of the woman [Gen. 3:15]. Now He had come, not as the son of Joseph [who had a genetic disorder called SIN] but as the seed of the woman, conceived of the Holy Spirit, which is with perfect and holy DNA!
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
The royal bloodline of Jesus Christ continues on to this very day. His genealogy can be your family tree, not by blood but by faith in Him alone.
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

Remember the title of this message, “Who’s in Your Family Tree”. Well honestly it doesn’t matter who’s in your family tree. What matters most is “Whose Family Tree Are You In”.
