Anti Christ

1 John 2:18 ESV
18 Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.
When we hear last hour, we obviously think of the second coming and the end of times, but the real question is what would these first century Christians have thought. They knew they were living in the last days, because the age to come they had been waiting on, the return of messiah had already come, so John kept talking about the last hour and how the time was coming...
So they believed the first coming of christ initiated a new age… and settled the doom we had in the old age… he fulfilled he old covenant and issued in a new one… and the age we were living in was between the two… the age to come… the kingdom of heaven… the kingdom of god… you hear these tossed around between different gospel writers… and when they talked about it… save them from the… the messiah come… and Jesus says the kingdom of God is at hand… while he was here we are living in it.. we could have it… and it was to come as well with his second coming...
So when people talk about the last hour… they are talking about hte final days of the final days… are you following me.... the last hour then is the final period of the time between when jesus has come and ascended, and when he will return again...
So when you hear antichrist what do you think?
Only in Johannine letters but the conception is found elsewhere
Appearing of the antichrist was a sign that the end was approaching
So he was saying, yes this false teaching is coming but that doesn’t mean there is no false teaching now, the false teaching is happening, there are some false teachings already around. So the ‘spirit’ of antichrist was already at work in the world.
What are some of those teaching that are false in the world today that we are hearing?
Prosperity
Word of Faith
Word of Faith teachers combine a variety of unbiblical ideas. Because each teacher is independent, they might teach things slightly differently, but they all share the same foundational errors. Some of these false ideas include, but are not limited to, the following:
Faith is a force, and words are the containers for that forceBeing made in God’s image means that we share in His divine natureSalvation brings health and wealth as the right of all believersGod speaks to Word of Faith leaders directly
New apostolic reformation
As with any movement, the NAR has had a variety of influences over the years. While not everyone in the NAR is Charismatic/Pentecostal, the movement is almost entirely in Charismatic/Pentecostal circles. Based on the teachings of some of its prominent leaders, the NAR has strong connections to previous, troublesome, Charismatic/Pentecostal movements. Here are a few of the commonly-held ideas taught by prominent leaders in the NAR:
God specially empowered new intercessors in the 1970s, new prophets in the 1980s and new apostles in the 1990s. 2001 marked the beginning of the ‘Second Apostolic Age.’
Men and women calling themselves apostles and prophets are elevated to positions of leadership based on supposed God-given authority in the church.
These leaders are supposedly given supernatural powers, including the ability to provide new doctrinal revelation.
Supernatural manifestations, from tongues to raising people from the dead to mass conversions to heavenly conversations with Jesus or Adam or whomever, are to be expected (and are claimed by certain leaders).
These powers are needed to establish dominion over the earth, as God supposedly instructed in Genesis. This is variously understood on a spectrum, from having influence over culture to actually ruling God’s Kingdom here on earth, in our time.
They believe Jesus cannot return until the church has dominion over the earth. This process will necessitate the martyrdom of many as spiritual warfare increases.
1 John 2:19 ESV
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
So now he is making it clear that there is an antichrist who will come, but there are these false teachers in the world.
Bill Johnson… called out for his glasses… his wife dying...
He is saying they went out from us… they are teaching this false doctrine that is pushing them away from the true doctrine in the church and they are no longer a part of us...
He is talking here also about the perserverance of the saints and the nature of the church, so if we are going to stay a part of the faith and a part of the church we have to perservere to the end… and keep the faith the entire time… he’s saying these guys didn’t persevere until the end… they let something draw them off the truth of what they needed to know… and how can we keep from doing that?
I think this also shows the importance of community with the church… they left us… adn they fell apart… therefore it is important for us to stay together and keep walking in the faith… to keep us together,., this in itself is a warning to think we can do life without the church...
1 John 2:20 NIV
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
This I think is a speech against only one person having all the truth… this would have been a huge statement later that could have been used against the catholic church when they believed priest to be the only ones to express perfect knowledge… and its a smack in the face to all the pastors who think they can be the only ones that discern truth and no one else has the ability....
How do we fix that in churches? How do we keep a church from going that way?
1 John 2:21 ESV
21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
I love this, he is saying, look I am not writing you to tell you new information or stuff that you do not already know, but I am writing to confirm what you believe is the truth… I dont want you to get off base… I want you to know that you have it already
1 John 2:22–23 ESV
22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
So those that left first have not just said that Jesus is the Messiah of the OT, but when you combine these two verses what you see John saying is that those people are denying that Jesus has come in the flesh.. or a better translation that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. The antichrists in this era were teaching that Jesus was born and died a man and that ‘the christ idea’ was only with him during his public ministry…descending on him at baptism… and leaving him before the cross… so they were saying Jesus wasn’t the son of God… he was a dude where the spirit rested on… see the difference… in cheap they denied the incarnation of Christ…
To him this was the ultimate lie… notice
1 John 2:4 ESV
4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,
A LIAR
1 John 4:20 ESV
20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
A Liar
1 John 2:22 ESV
22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
THE liar… and antichrist… spreading false doctrine.. its a crazy difference in words and beliefs
And he is saying we cannot have fellowship with the father if we perpetuate this type of lie…
1 John 2:24 ESV
24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.
What had they heard from the beginning? The Gospel.... someone define the gospel as shortly as you can…He is saying the gospel hasn’t changed… not from the beginning… it is exactly the same…
1 John 2:25 ESV
25 And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
If we stay faithful to the gospel to the end, this is what we get and how we relate with him as a result… he has given and promise of hte father is eternal life
1 John 2:26 ESV
26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.
THey haven’t succeeded but they are trying to succeed
1 John 2:27 ESV
27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
THe anointing (the charisma) was our safeguard and the anointing remains in us… And this is scary, but it says we should have no one need to teach us… why do you think that is?
Because Jesus promised that the holy spirit would never leave us, and through the hoily spirit we can learn what it is the scripture is trying to tell us… and I think this is where some people can get it wrong, they can learn and think they have something special type of revelation, but that isnt what is happening, here, the holy spirit cannot contradict itself…
1 John 2:28 ESV
28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.
This goes along with the end of verse 27… just as he has taught you… abide in him… the HS taught us that we need to stay with him… stay faithful to the end…and why is that? Because we know that he has come… and he already did what he said he would… and we believe that he will be returning… so if all of these things are true then we should be living a holy life....
The HOly spirit at the end time should give us confidence and allow us to stand faithful in front of him… we shouldn’t sink in fear of what we have done we should have a bold confidence… and I think this relates to
Philippians 2:10–11 ESV
10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
And what we can realize is this isn’t a forced bended knee, no, this is people who are realizing who Jesus is… some will bow their knee as they sink from him in shame… finally realizing who he is… and those of us that know him as our Lord and Saviour will bow our knees to him becasue he is our Lord… and we know who he is… in confidence… not in shame...
1 John 2:29 ESV
29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.
And here the switch is from Jesus to God.... and what you see is if you know that God is righteous it only follows that everyone that is born of him is also righteous,....
