Doctrine of Man

God created man in His own image. He distinctly created man both male and female. He created humanity for companionship and fellowship with Him. God created man with a free choice to make their own conscious decisions. Humanity was created to have dominion and rule and reign over the earth. God desires all men to be obedient to Him.

Why Should we study the Doctrine of Man?

To be able to understand God better because human are made in his image.
The Study of people and who they are help us to speak on spiritual things.
To get a christian world view of what a human is.

What is a human Being?

Scripture ask the same question
Psalm 8:3–4 NASB95
3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained; 4 What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him?
Psalm 144:3 NASB95
3 O Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You think of him?
Job 7:17–18 NASB95
17 “What is man that You magnify him, And that You are concerned about him, 18 That You examine him every morning And try him every moment?

What makes up a Human?

Humans are made in God’s Image
Humans are body soul spirit
Humans are made male and female

God’s Image

This Basic truth is affirmed by
Jews
Muslims
Christians

God’s image in Scripture

Genesis 1:27 NASB95
27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Genesis 5:1 NASB95
1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.
1 Corinthians 11:7 NASB95
7 For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
James 3:9 NASB95
9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;

View Points on God’s image

Substantive View

the image is a definite characteristic or capacity within the physical, psychological, or spiritual makeup of a human being.

“God’s image is not an arrangement of skin cells or a physical shape, but an inbreathed spirit.

2. Relational view

regard the image as the capacity for relationships.

3. Representative view

people are God’s image because they are designed to represent God on earth and exercise dominion over his creation

4. Composite View

image affirms insights of multiple views.

Theological Significance

Every race is the same
That every sex is the same
No matter how we look we were made in his image

Body Soul Spirit

Trichotomism
1 Thessalonians 5:23 NASB95
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2. Dichotomous

the view that humans are composed of a unity of material and immaterial aspects, and the presence of both is necessary for the thing in question to be considered a person.

1 Corinthians 5:3 NASB95
3 For I, on my part, though absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present.
3. Monotheism

the view that a person is a unified whole, with no distinction between body and soul.

is the widely held belief among Christians that the soul/spirit of every believer will survive physical death and be clothed with an immortal body at the resurrection of the dead.

Theological Significance

We are higher than animals and have dominion
That we focus on the spiritual needs
That we focus on the physical needs

Male and Female

God Created Male and Female
Genesis 2:7 NASB95
7 Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Genesis 1:27 NASB95
27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Genesis 2:20–24 NASB95
20 The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22 The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” 24 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.
God’s has roles for Male and Female
Man is the spiritual leader
Women are to submit to that leadership
Ephesians 5:22–33 NASB95
22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are members of His body. 31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

Theological Significance

That marriage is between man and woman
That male and female are equal
That each have a role in the relationship
That sex is for marriage and no other way

Sin

What sin is?

James 4:17 NASB95
17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.

Sin entered the World

Genesis 3:1-24
Genesis 3:1–24 NASB95
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. 8 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” 16 To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.” 17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.” 20 Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. 22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.
Romans 5:12 NASB95
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—

Sin is in all and Leads to Death

Romans 3:23 NASB95
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sins solution

Romans 5:8 NASB95
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 10:9-10,13
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Romans 10:13 NASB95
13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Theological Significance

To understand sin is universal
Sin is not a human problem but sin is the human problem
sinners cannot save themselves
solution to sin is found in the Life,Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ
