18 Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.
19 Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel.
20 For this I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough to speak about it as I should.
Introduction: Recap spiritual warfare from last week. Lead into prayer in spiritual warfare.
Paul doesn’t specifically say that prayer is a part of the armour. However the fact that he bring prayer up at this time indicates to us the necessity of prayer in spiritual warfare.
PRAY AT ALL TIMES
18 Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.
This is a constant theme when it comes to prayer. We are commissioned over and over again to be in continuous prayer.
Prayer as a lifestyle not just a response.
1 Now he told them a parable on the need for them to pray always and not give up.
12 Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; be persistent in prayer.
6 Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Just to look at a few.
All matters of our lives ought to be met with prayer including spiritual warfare. Often times when tragedies of life hit we have the tendency to do everything but pray (we’ll deal with this later).
Notice that he says that we are to pray in the Spirit.
Human lead praying can often be self centered (based on limited info).
26 In the same way the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings.
Notice Paul’s position (in jail). Are his prayers centered on himself? No.
2. This is the kitchen sink of prayers (every kind and every request) (prayer upon prayer) all kinds
a. not just for ourselves in warfare but for all (near, far, and wide)
Christianity is a global religion, always have been. (remember that spiritual warfare is the Kingdom advancing with the proclamation of the Gospel). People all over the world are experiencing warfare and we ought to be praying for them.
Also think about our church and its needs to fulfill God’s will!!!!
3. Paul views himself as a missionary (pray for him too)
19 Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel.
the right thing to say
6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.
boldness (wow, Paul was already a bold person)
19 Pray also for me, that the message may be given to me when I open my mouth to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel.
20 For this I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I might be bold enough to speak about it as I should.
our timidness at times (what do we fear in sharing our faith?)
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.
20 Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us—
