INTRODUCTION:

1. The title of the song is "Angry Words".

A. The title of the song poses a question that needs to be addressed in the introduction.

Is being angry wrong? No
Ephesians 4:26 NKJV
26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

B. We have an example of Jesus being angry.

John 2:13–16 NKJV
13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!”
If Jesus was angry, is it a sin for us to simply be angry? No

C. So, angry words must be something more than just being angry.

BODY:

1. ANGRY WORDS ARE IDLE WORDS.

What are idle words? Words with no good use.

A. Jesus said we will give an account for every idle word.

Matthew 12:34–37 NKJV
34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

B. Not every idle word is an angry word, but every angry word is an idle word.

Ephesians 4:29–32 NKJV
29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

C. When we speak, we need to ask ourselves questions from Ephesians 4:29-32.

Is what we are saying good? Let us examine our words.
Is what we are saying necessary? Let us examine our words.
Is what we are saying imparting grace to the hearers? Let us examine our words.
Is what we are saying from bitterness? Let us examine our words.
Is what we are saying with wrath, malice, or anger? Let us examine our words.
Is what we are saying just noise or clamor? Let us examine our words.
Is what we are saying evil-speaking? Let us examine our words.
2 Corinthians 13:5 NKJV
5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
1 Corinthians 9:27 NKJV
27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

D. If we will ask the questions in the prior slides, we will avoid angry words that have only bad intentions.

1. Angry words are used to put people down.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV
11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

2. Angry words do not unify; they cause dissension among brothers.

Proverbs 6:19 NKJV
19 A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
1 Corinthians 1:10 NKJV
10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
John 17:11 NKJV
11 Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.

3. Angry words do not teach in love.

Ephesians 4:15 NKJV
15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—

4. Angry words do not make friends.

Proverbs 18:24 NKJV
24 A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

5. Angry words will not bring an erring brother back to Christ.

Galatians 6:1 NKJV
1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

6. Angry words will not help the lost to be saved.

James 5:20 NKJV
20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
1 Peter 4:8 NKJV
8 And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”
John 13:35 NKJV
35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

2. NEVER LET ANGRY WORDS SLIP.

A. Angry words destroy.

Proverbs 11:9 NKJV
9 The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered.

B. This is why our thoughts must be pure.

Philippians 4:8 NKJV
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

C. If your heart is full of anger , angry words will slip.

Luke 6:45 NKJV
45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

3. WE SHOULD STAY CALM.

A. Our impulse should not instantly cause us to become angry.

James 1:19 NLT
19 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

4. ANGRY WORDS SOIL OUR LIPS.

A. Angry words make us dirty.

Isaiah 64:5–6 NKJV
5 You meet him who rejoices and does righteousness, Who remembers You in Your ways. You are indeed angry, for we have sinned— In these ways we continue; And we need to be saved. 6 But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.

CONCLUSION:

1. "Love one another, thus saith the Savior; Children obey the Father's blest command."

A. If we will do this, we will not have to worry about angry words.

John 13:34–35 NKJV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
