Religious prac., associated w service to/for God.
Temple items, commemorated loc.
Most imp. stories are the anointed people! Carry the story
Prophets, Priests, & Kings
Holy Spirit empowering!
First pers: Aaron & sons; Adam & Moses both chosen specifically to head up God's good plan; Joshua; Judges!
How YHWH works His plan/s in and through ppl
Ppl mess up or become changed when encounter plan ((both!))
Jewish... hope for better, more, future ideal!
Psalm 84:8-9 “Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty; listen to me, God of Jacob. Look on our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one.”
Today, look at one of the more ideal meshichim we have in scripture! And why....
A Royal Conqueror
A Royal Conqueror
David
Persecuted King
Anointing did not bring easy street! Contrary... continual conflict
15yo.... walks onto battlefield and faces giant
Boss tries to kill him several times - spends nxt 15 years as a rogue hermit, fleeing same boss
Finally KING, faces civl war
Later his own family tries to oust him as king!
King supervised God's law over people
David Not the first royal mashiach - second supplants the first. surpasses!
Represented God's law over the land.
Represented the people before YHWH.
~40yo, reigned over all 12 Tribes; United Israel!
Psalm 22:1-2, 6-7 “But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads.”
Self-controlled
Very emotional, but in control.
Didn't let his success go to his head
Psalm 6:6-9 “I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow; they fail because of all my foes. Away from me, all you who do evil, for the Lord has heard my weeping. The Lord has heard my cry for mercy; the Lord accepts my prayer.”
1 Samuel 24
David hiding out in cave. Saul comes in to, uh, "take care of business". "Nature called". D's soldiers want him to take 'im out.
INSTEAD, Dave cuts a pc of his robe off.
1 Samuel 24:5-7 “Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.””
This same thing happens again. Saul, Nabal... wisdom & control
Man after God's own HEART.
Decision making, emotions, temperament in line with The Divine.
When D. ignores or overrides this, it leads to biggest failings.
Conqueror/Warrior
Goliath & Philistines, Amalakites, Rephaiim, enemies of Israel
Not just invaders, but a spiritual battle to cleanse the holy land
Remember: Moses, Josh, Judg. anointed for this...
Cleared out much of the land for Israel; sacred space
David brought unity to 12 independent tribes; to rule over God's family!
Gave YHWH all of the credit...
2 Samuel 22:1-3 “David sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior— from violent people you save me.”
Failings
At the height of all D. accomplished on behalf of God, He allowed himself to stray; elevate his own ego above God's design.
2 Samuel 12:9-13 “Why did you despise the word of the Lord by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own... 11 “This is what the Lord says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity on you... 12 You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’ ” 13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.”
Bc of that, there was great division and conflict in his family and it greatly affected the kingdom.
yet, God's promise over David's family remained, even if they rarely lived up to the title.
Promised hope: Jeremiah 23:5 ““The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.”
Hope for another man after God's own <3; would lead ppl even better than D.
Jesus: Persecuted Conquering King
At Jesus' baptism; God's Spirit ANOINTS him like a prophet, priest, king...
Luke 3:21-22 “When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.””
Those welcoming him into Jerusalem recognize his kingship also...
Luke 19:37-38 “When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!””
Jesus held the role of ruling God's people & the rep'ing people before God.
After anointing, Christ gets right to work at His main mission
Luke 4:1-2; 13 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil… “When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.”
X immediately confronts lord of evil on his own turf (desert)
Luke paints Jesus' ministry as being schemed against by the Opposer from Day1.
Just a few vv. and a town later, X confronted by another servant of the enemy.
Luke 4:33-35 “In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.”
Jesus' primary mission was taking down demonic barriers.
Jesus proph. in Isaiah about his power...
Isaiah 9:6 “And [my servant] will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God...”
IN FACT, Jesus sees this conflict as the primary instigator of his persecution
to the pharisees:
John 8:43-44 “Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires...”
Peter even takes part
Matthew 16:22-23 “Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.””
Jesus def. sees wickedness as instigating his final hours of trial.
Luke 22:52 “Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?”
The key to both David & Jesus’ Success as Mashiach is their heart after God.
David's greatest successes? Depended solely on YHWH for his safety and victory!
The victory that X won on the cross?
Didn't look like breaking heads or invading Rome...
Looked like weilding a several hundred pound pc. of wood up a steep hill.
...like screaming "Father forgive them"; getting whipped; hands being nailed; beard hairs ripped from face.
Jesus conquers by being conquered. Let that be a lesson to us when we want to take up arms and ‘show ‘em what we’re made of’.
X had God’s heart - ushered in an era of unbridled forgiveness and grace!
Look to his return for a more literal fulfillment of His conquering…
Take up Your Cross
Take up Your Cross
Mark 8:34-36 “Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
