23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece.
24 So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.”
25 Therefore the soldiers did these things.
But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.
28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.”
29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.
30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
31 Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him;
33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.
34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.
36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.”
37 And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body.
39 Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.
40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

They torn Jesus garments and divided it in 4, (for the 4 solders)
he four parts could have been: 1. Robe 2. belt, 3. sandals, 4.head covering,
and the 5th is the tunic
but they did not do this with the tunic, which was one piece.
The tunic was a inner clothing, but not underwear.
this has historical value
Lets look at Exodus 39:22-23
22 Then he made the robe of the ephod of woven work, all of blue;
23 and the opening of the robe was at the top in the center, as the opening of a coat of mail, with a binding all around its opening, so that it would not be torn.

This is the instructions and of a priestly garment (one whole piece)
so they torn and divided His clothes , and cast lots for His priestly robe
once again John share here the fulfillment of prophecy (Psalms 22:18)
v.25-27

But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his home.
among the solders is several women mentioned here
Jesus’ mother
Jesus aunt
Mary the wife of Clo-pas
and Mary Magdalene
But Jesus directs His attention to His mother and John
We see in verse 26-27 that Jesus gives the responsibility of His mother to John, and Mary to John.
John then took care of Mary from that day on.

28After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, *said, “I am thirsty.”
29A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.
Jesus is thirsty, He is at the point of the end,
lets remember the text
Psalm…….
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And my tongue cleaves to my jaws;
And You lay me in the dust of death.
excessive bleeding due to beating, physical exhaustion, carrying His cross and being nailed to it. Jesus has nothing left.
Jesus knows that the time has come where everything has been accomplished.
With this…the little strength that Jesus had He said, He was thirsty
This is not to be confused with the mixed wine with gall (Mt 27:34)
which was used as a help to pain relief.
Jesus rejected that,
understanding that He did not have anything to dull the pain.
But His thirst was a physical sign of His physical exhaustion
But He did take the cheap wine.
This could have been so that Jesus could have enough strength to say what He said next.
v. 30

30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
It is finished!!!!!
Jesus says it is finished.......the fulfilling of one’s task.
Jesus has brought the completion of redemption
Jesus said something that they whole world/creation has been waiting for......
in that Jesus gave up His spirit. Jesus was not killed, He did not succumb to His injuries. HE DIDN’T KILL HIMSELF!!!!
He gave up His Spirit.
v. 31-33

The reason for breaking the legs.........

The flow of Blood and Water shows that Jesus was indeed dead.
Jesus wants this to be known, it was not something that he heard of, but it is something that he witnessed
John again talk of the fulfillment of scripture v.36 (Ps34:20,) v.37(Zach 12:10)

Joseph is mentioned in all four of the gospels with only the connection to the burial of Jesus.
We know that he was part of the elite Jewish group ( Mk 15:43)
We know that he was rich (Mt 27:57)
He was a secret believer (John 12:42)
Are you, are we Christians in hiding, ashamed and afraid?
v. 41-42

41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
42 Therefore because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
It is believed that this tomb is Joseph’s but we don’t know that for sure.
We know that this was continent. It was close.
Why did John record this information in the text?
Because we have a savior who was crucified
Because we have a savior who died.
because we have a Savior who was buried
