Dating Amy
Does someone love me without my performance or utility?
Evolution story - chance and indifference?
Religion - Behavior/ Utility
Moral, therapeutic deism - minimum care to be free- freedom is more important than love
Big Idea: God is love and He is seeking us in Jesus.
Love sacrifices out of humility
Fear: There’s too much chaos...
Humility values the other just as much as oneself.
Humility is willing to sacrifice/do abnormal things to bring my presence and care to your need.
Love finds and praises
Fear: I am not noticed...
You are known...
The Hound of Heaven
Now of that long pursuit
Comes on at hand the bruit;
That Voice is round me like a bursting sea:
‘And is thy earth so marred,
Shattered in shard on shard?
Lo, all things fly thee, for thou fliest Me!
Strange, piteous, futile thing!
Wherefore should any set thee love apart?
Seeing none but I makes much of naught’ (He said),
‘And human love needs human meriting:
How hast thou merited—
Of all man’s clotted clay the dingiest clot?
Alack, thou knowest not
How little worthy of any love thou art!
Whom wilt thou find to love ignoble thee,
Save Me, save only Me?
All which I took from thee I did but take,
Not for thy harms,
But just that thou might’st seek it in My arms.
All which thy child’s mistake
Fancies as lost, I have stored for thee at home:
Rise, clasp My hand, and come!’
Halts by me that footfall:
Is my gloom, after all,
Shade of His hand, outstretched caressingly?
‘Ah, fondest, blindest, weakest,
I am He Whom thou seekest!
Thou dravest love from thee, who dravest Me.’
— Francis Thompson (1859–1907)
Love treasures and ponders
Love is your place in another.
It’s not dependent on you.
It’s affection freely given to you with patience and kindness and not withheld for behavior or ability.
It’s not value that originates from any place or thing than another’s great esteem and desire for you.
It’s the lifeforce of another that colors you with joy.
On your best and worst days you are loved just the same.
As a single cell you are loved just the same as you are today without reservation.
- Anne Halley
Fear: I am leavable
Will you believe that God loves you?
He pursues you so that you may know Him.
